Today my father, a veteran of the Korean War, participated in an Honor Flight, a program that flies aging veterans to DC for a day of visiting the war memorials and Arlington National Cemetery. I was able to join him for most of the day.

As our bus was driving through the cemetery on the way to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the tour guide mentioned that five five-star officers are buried in Arlington Cemetery. In addition to the five, there is an officer of even higher rank at Arlington. Name any two of these star-spangled officers buried at Arlington.

George Washington and Eisenhower?

I was there in the 70s, but I can't say I remember names.

I think that Washington is buried at Mount Vernon, and Grant is buried in a Mausoleum near West Point overlooking the Hudson River. Well, perhaps presidential burial sites would be fertile ground for this quiz in the future.

So my guess would be Blackjack Pershing as one of the 5 stars,
and George H.W Bush as a US President. Although I'm not very sure of where they were laid to rest.

Pershing was a beyond five star general. Washington was the first one.
How about Omar Bradley, Chester Nimitz?

Pershing and Bradley are both correct. So that's one for Rusty and one for Salty. That leaves four more correct answers still on the table.

Hint: Admirals King and Nimitz and Generals MacArthur and Eisenhower are all buried elsewhere.

Yes - Gen. George C. Marshall is buried at Arlington. Your turn, Rusty.

The others are Adm. William D. Leahy, Gen. Henry H. Arnold, and Adm. William F. Halsey.

That's an interesting question. I'm still sorting out presidential succession in that period.

What comes to mind is that his wife was the defacto Vice President, but that wasn't the question.

Wilson's VP was known for his sense of humor. During a Senate debate, he is said to have quipped, "What this country really needs is a good five-cent cigar."
