My institute's IT department just installed Windows 10 on my laptop two weeks ago. I absolutely hate it. As usual, Microsoft took the opportunity to remove useful options and add useless bells and whistles. It's the software equivalent of Orwellian Newspeak - simplified in order to prevent expressions of thoughtcrime. |

REF: Windows 10
Most Windows 7 users are going to shudder (in probable horror) when confronted with it for the 1st time.
Windows 10 start menu never fails to give a cringe inducing moment of
absolute disbelief with a 1st time Win 10 user. A WTF moment every time!.
(WTF - what the fraq and you can guess what cuss word fraq replaces)
Anyone who has spent any amount of time previously with Windows 8 already has gone through a lot of the learning curve so more or less numb (conditioned) to the additional horrors. Win 10 includes a lot of Win 8 features.
Windows 10 includes a mini-start menu.
Basically the windows 8 Landscape menu list now in a Vertical column List
and does not includes anything near the Win 7 Start Menu functionality.
A replacement shell is something I would suggest if you can get it past
your IT Dept.
There use to be Freeware called
Classic Shell which worked for Windows 7/8/10
http://www.classicshell.net/
and you had a choice of Start menus - win XP or 7 or variations off
Development has ceased but was made opensource.
This has now been continued as openshell Freeware
https://github.com/Open-Shell/Open-Shell-Menu
(lots of tech reference stuff still refer to classic shell)
If you want a retail equivalent with support try here
https://www.stardock.com/
https://www.stardock.com/products/start10/
Hopefully your IT Dept have already Installed Adobe Flash Player, Adobe Reader, and Java runtime as you are going to need them.
Did your IT department do a win10 upgrade or a Fresh Install?
as a Fresh install is now a worse User experience compared to an upgrade
from a previous OS which retains some older features that people may actually want to use.
An alternate browser to Microsoft Edge is also recommended
I prefer Firefox as I loath Chrome.
(Microsoft is reportedly going the Chrome source route itself with the Edge Browser replacement).
I use infranview Freeware and codec pack as a graphical image browser
and VLC media player freeware.
and maybe paint.net Freeware (never gotten into gimp's quirky interface)
https://www.getpaint.net/
Notepad ++ freeware is something you may also want
https://notepad-plus-plus.org/
Its hard not to suggest the winrar retail archiver but anyway
7-zip archive freeware utlity
https://www.7-zip.org/
It won't come as a suprise considering the amount of freeware
already suggested that Libre Office Freeware is also suggested
(not essential if you already have MS Office but would still suggest it
as it has some features not in Office).
I would also suggest you apply the changes outlined here
Windows 10 File Explorer Folder History
http://www.hookedonpirates.com/forums/index.php
Microsoft have moved away from the old control panel to a Settings Tablet App which means no one knows where anything is anymore.
Google search engine is your prime tech support option.
(there is no such thing as win10 power Users anymore,
just some people have a better ability to enter a google search string)
Microsoft inflicted Defaults tend to be Tablet style Apps, old desktop style
applications with Menus and a print option are much more useful.
Lots of unecessary changes which reduce your productivity.
This illustrates a point, a simple thing like applying a screensaver,
you have to do a google search to find out how this now works.

One Big user irriation is the windows 10 bundled games

You could always try the old Win XP games files
(probably copy to say C:\mygames, and not program files)

What do you call a guy that only has 1 copy of Microsoft office?
A man of few words
Whoever stole my copy of Microsoft Office...
I will find you; you have my Word. You’ve taken my one only good Outlook in life. Seriously though, how did you gain Access & why did you only leave OneNote? |
