|

You read it. By the time i get to montalbalm I'm in poor health. Obviously going after him sooner helps but does anyone have any tips to defeating him while middle aged and having a mid life crisis like guardacostas? I try to wait for him to slash or under cut and than stab foward. But it all happens so fast. I know just quickly clicking on the jab button doesn't work. You jab and miss or he blocks, you pirate can't recover fast enough to block or more importantly jab back of you're own when montalbalm slashes again
Poor pirate's got his teenager years on his mind while trying to sword fight, it happens.
The named pirates and raymondo are all walks in a park, why can't old monty be different |

The most important thing to realize about Montalban is that he is a mediocre fencer apart from his lightning-fast special attack. Unfortunately, his special attack varies from one game to another (and maybe even from one encounter to another?), so it's hard to make any general rules. And when he uses his special attack, there's not much you can do to stop it if you are playing at Swashbuckler or your character is old. I've heard some people use taunts to slow him down, but I've never mastered taunting.
The only game I've ever played in which I failed to score 126 points was the time I played a full game at Swash, and I could not defeat Monty in his lair because I was over 30. I replayed that encounter half a dozen times without ever beating him. |

Id say messing with the kf files could tame him down on that special attack. All the top ten have something special they are good at. Id say if you wanted you could make a real difficult opponent by adding all their special traits into one fighter. |

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll just try going after him younger, when I felt old was only supposed to happen to old people.
I remember one time i was searching for buried treasure, and walked right into his hideout two years into the game. that was an easy sword fight. |

It's much easier to beat him on his ship. I hover just beyond his maximum cannon range in my pinnace, wait for him to fire, and then dart inside his range and fire my tiny broadside. After doing this a few dozen times he can no longer turn. Then I get close enough to rake him repeatedly with grape shot to whittle down his crew. After that he's easy to beat in a swordfight!
But I feel like such a cheater when I do that. I usually try to take my prizes undamaged. |

When fencing montalbalm if using the keypad keys,
instead try it with mouse button clicks on the screen key icons.
As far as I can recall, the game aging process has delays in the
keypad buttons processing to simulate aging,
which may not be present when using the mouse.
Sashanan Faq, covers fencing in detail
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/pc/915017-sid-meiers-pirates/faqs/34143
see sections
[5.2] Fencing
[6.6] Marquis de la montalbalm
This only works with a New Game
SPECIAL SKILL - MEDICINE
Medicine basically extends the health of your pirate, allowing you longer
careers before your health gets in the way of your ability to fight properly.
You'll be able to start new expeditions for longer, and hold off the ill
effects of age for longer as well. The difference is significant but not earth
shattering; expect to get about 4 more years out of your pirate.
This may only work with a new game
(Game patch 1.02 recommended)
AdamMil - The Challenge Pack
http://www.hookedonpirates.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7902
Includes
Slower Aging - This mod reduces the effects of aging by 25%. This is the only mod that makes the game easier, but the result is more realistic and it helps with finishing the more difficult game that results from applying the other mods.

yes sea fighting is easy. Get his crew down next nothing and hit him once or twice and he's out. I was talking his hideout and the lucrative prize of all those fame points in defeating him.
Corsair, can the slowing aging mod be applied stand alone to a new game, without the challenge pack?
Nevermind, i looked up my answer. I'm still taking a break for a bit from SMP anyway |

The way I defeat him and the other evil Spaniards, is to knock down his sails and then grape shot them until there's 1 crew member left. You only have to touch him with your sword one time and they surrender. |

Battles

see Duels Section
(listed here for convenience)
Duels
You'll encounter a lot of duels, sometimes in relatively unusual locations. Most of your duels will be the aftermath of a ship battle, when you two ships touch.
Dueling is a more-complex version of paper, rock, scissors. You and your enemy have three locations for attacks: high, middle, and low. You also have three types of dodges: high, middle, and low. Stop me if I'm going too fast here.
Basically, when one person hits the button to attack, a very short animation will telegraph where the attack is coming. You then need to press the opposite dodge button to avoid it. If the attack is avoided, then the attacker is stunned for a moment, giving the dodger an ample chance to counterattack. If the attack succeeds, whoever was hit is knocked back a few steps. After one person is knocked back enough, they will lose the duel via a special animation. (No one ever dies.)
It's not just that simple, however. Different variables, such as special weapons or specific enemies, can influence the way the battle moves. The other nine pirates typically have at least one attack that moves faster than the others. That is, the time between the telegraphed animation and the actual attack is much faster. Barmaids and bartenders will typically warn you of a given enemy's special strength, so you'll have to be careful.
Beyond that, the first variable occurs before the duel even gets under way. You'll be given the choice to use a longsword, rapier, or cutlass. The rapier has a faster attack speed at the cost of some defense strength, and the cutlass has a stronger defense at the cost of some attack strength. The longsword is a middle ground. I prefer using rapiers because I can get in a quick thrust while they're going through their telegraph animation, but try them all out to get a feel for what you prefer. You should use a longsword for your very first duel so you get a feel for the "normal" speed.
VERSION DIFFERENCE WARNING:
Fighting feels a little less intuitive on the Xbox than it is on the PC. On the PC, there are separate buttons for the six possible moves. On the Xbox, you have to use the control stick and one of two buttons depending on whether you're attacking or dodging. Also, on the PC and the easiest difficulty level, a small flash will indicate what button you need to press to dodge the enemy attack. This helps you learn your timing and how the dodges correlate with the attacks. The Xbox has no such "newbie mode" on any difficulty level.
Just remember no matter what version you're playing that when they attack high, you need to dodge low. When they attack low, you need to dodge high. When they attack in the middle, just dodge in the middle. The middle dodge will actually partially block high and low attacks. The victim will still be pushed backwards, just not as much as a full attack.
Also, the victim of an attack is pushed back farther if he his struck with a high or low attack. Thrusts therefore are only useful as a quick attack if you can get it in. Try to use counterattacks as your primary way of winning duels. You can also taunt your enemy, but doing so doesn't seem to have an effect on the duel.
During a duel, keep an eye on the number of sailors each side has. If one side runs out of soldiers, then that side's captain will immediately surrender.
I like counter-fencing!!!

That works at sea, but it won't help you against Montalban in his lair. |

Roland is correct. It’s a totally different ballgame then and if you can’t fence you gonna get your butt spanked. Tavern too if you can ever catch him there. One thing I found doesn’t work is shooting out the screen. It’s a lot easier to start again by saving a game then forking out the cash to buy a new monitor to view getting your butt kicked again and if you repeat that process it gets kinda expensive. |

I can't seem to find the help thread that said just low slash and plenty of it. Is that an easy way to defeat him? |

I unloaded two barrels from a double barrel shotgun to get him. I think I did but it caused the game to crash without being able to even start a new one. |
