Sue Mundy (fictional confederate guerrilla)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sue_Mundy

Union Major General Stephen G. Burbridge was given command over the Commonwealth of Kentucky in June 1864 and declared martial law.

The Sue Mundy persona was created by George D. Prentice, the editor of the Louisville Journal to portray General Burbridge as an incompetent commander, unable to protect Kentucky citizens.
Prentice opposed the heavy-handed military rule of General Burbridge

Guerrilla groups operated in Kentucky late in 1864 and in 1865
Some claimed to be part of "Sue Mundy's gang" because of the popular image and instant notoriety.
Prentice published articles about guerrilla terrorism in the Louisville Journal, attributing it to activities of "Sue Mundy". He emphasized what he considered the incompetence of Burbridge to protect residents of the area.

Some thought or alleged that the 20-year-old guerrilla Marcellus Jerome Clarke, a Confederate captain was the model for or actually "Sue Mundy."

Prentice vehemently denied that Clarke was Mundy.

By some accounts, Henry C. Magruder (another guerrilla riding with Clarke) was the original Sue Mundy.

After capture, Clarke and later Magruder were both tried and hanged.

Well if his name really was Sue I bet either he was a cross dresser not likely in those days and certainly you wouldn’t be an Honorable person anywhere North or South or if he really was Sue he was in a fight everyday with other kids growing up and later into manhood.

Sue Mundy was fictional
but people tried to attribute the legend to real life persons

Clarke was a good fit as his exploits were in part attributed to
Sue Mundy.
If you look at the photos of Clarke you can see why
he may have been thought to be Sue Mundy.

The Johnny Cash song "A Boy Named Sue"
was inspired by a man named Jean Shepherd,
(french version of John, female equivalent is Jeanne)
often taunted as a child because of his feminine-sounding name

Jean Shepherd wrote the book :IN God we Trust, All others Pay Cash"

The book was the basis for the 1983 Christmas comedy film "A Christmas Story".

Jean Shepherd narrated the movie as the voice of the adult Ralphie. He also had a cameo as the bearded man standing in the Santa Claus line at Higbee's.
