The History Guy: History Deserves to Be Remembered
Among the earliest of quasi-official pirates were those known by the swashbuckling name of Corsairs.
Europe was almost constantly at war during the sixteenth century, but instead of fighting a traditional war, France and England provided private ships with Letters of Marque to battle the Spanish in undeclared war.

Pirates of the Bronze Age Mediterranean raided ships and settlements throughout the era but especially during the period of the Late Bronze Age Collapse.
In fact, the mysterious Sea Peoples who invaded and raided the civilizations of the Near East were themselves pirates based on the islands of the eastern Mediterranean.
These pirates also raided the tombs of more ancient peoples around the Mediterranean and took the wealth within back to their bases in the Aegean, the Adriatic and even further afield.

A mid-19th century nautical term for the end of a rope or chain, at the point where it is attached. In vessels with no windlass, cables are secured to “Bitts “(pairs of bollards fixed to the deck)
The expression “to the bitter end “comes from when the rope is let out all the way to the “Bitts“

Over a Barrel
Someone being punished – bent or stretched beaten or lashed
Rub Salt into Wounds
Flogged (whipped sailors had salt rubbed into there wounds to make them more painful)
Getting down to the Nitty Gritty
This refers to visiting the deck of a slaving ship where “Nitty Gritty “was absorbent material, wood shavings sand sawdust etc mopped up the excrement – nice!
Sail Close to the Wind
To take chances or risks
Walk the plank
Blind folded and with hands tied behind back walking the plank and been left as shark food
Marooning
Miscreant pirates were taken to small islands awaiting their fate. With no supplies, sometimes with a pistol to take their own life
Letters of Marque

The 'Golden Age' of Piracy Explained: Privateers, Pirates and Blackbeard
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZR7sjMftYmQ
History Hit
Oct 9, 2023
You might imagine men who sail the high seas to rob and loot any ships that cross their path. After burying chests of gold in a secret location…they splash the rest of their cash in taverns on booze and women. With a groggy hangover, they return to their ship to continue their plundering.
But is there much historical truth in this idea of piracy? What’s the difference between a pirate, a buccaneer and a privateer? When did this age of piracy happen?
In this video Luke Tomes explores the Golden Age of Piracy - interrogating the myths, and uncovering what a life at sea was really like. Who were the famous real pirates? Was Blackbeard really that terrifying? Were pirates always drunk? Were females allowed to be pirates? We'll be answering all of your question!

Hidden Ports, Islands and Pirate Hideouts of the Caribbean!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSrcXctlWmA
Walk The Plank
May 10, 2023
For men and women living outside the realms of the law, the high seas of the Caribbean were an exceedingly dangerous place in the golden age of piracy. Danger lurked around every turn, governments employed cunning tactics to stop the pirate menace, and running out of supplies could have been a quick death sentence. As such, pirates and their crews needed havens - places around island and coastal ports where they could safely dock. Many of these places were secret, unknown to the men of the law, providing oceanic criminals a place to lay their heads, replenish supplies, and spend the money they had made out at sea.
While the ports discussed in today's video are all located in the Caribbean and its neighbouring areas, it is important to note that such places have existed the world over. Wherever there is piracy, there are ports and havens for pirates to lay low. Today, we will be looking at some of the most famous ports used as hiding spots for pirates across the golden age of piracy. We will look at their locations, purposes, and the pirates that they once harboured. Sit back as we journey to the Caribbean to explore the hidden ports and islands used by some of the world's most notorious pirates.
