Brig of War .... lots of speed...very good firepower...big enough to carry an invasion force to take out almost any port.

48 cannons are not always an advantage. When you fight against a little and damaged ship, the 48 cannons hit too much damage and the ship may sink and you may lose gold or specialist, etc.
That's why I don't prefer the Ship Of The Line but to tell the truth when I get one I can't sell her because it is so hard to find.

Yeah, but if you're hitting them from far away, you can just change from cannon balls to something that's still out of range as the guns fire and hit them with only half a broadside. Or if closer, do the same thing and knock out some guns and kill the crew simultaneously.

But if your rank is high enough you can get the ship repaired for FREE

Im a Duke for 4 of them, so I can go into any port and get mine fixed for nothing Very Happy

My all time favorite ship has to be the Treasure Galleon.

Collect them all.

I use the Mailrunner exclusively. It has a good combination of men, speed and manuverability. It also works on all diff levels.

Got a Ship of the Line last night and immediately upgraded from my Frigate. Oh my god, does this thing rock. 48 cannons will take down anything quickly and it is more maneuverable than the frigate. I still have'nt see one! I've accosted a number of Dutch/French/English ships that said 'New Warship', and they've all been large frigates so far. I want a SOTL!

DngrMse:

I noticed that the SOTL's apprearance seems random, usually appearing late in whatever game instance you are playing as a new warship.

It seems to most often show up in the 1660 or 1680 time periods.

Just beat the snot out of the English....I've found that's really the best way to get them to show up as the English traditionally were heavy supporters of the heavy frigate class--or at least seem to be in this game.

The really nice thing about the SOTL is that it has a FAST rating.....very kewl.

I have noticed that there seems to be a difference in ship speed when travelling with and then without cannon. Has anyone seen this or are my eyes playing tricks on me??

Prince James.

I think Im going to have to change my vote to the standard frigate. Good amount of guns, easy to come by, fairly agile and faster than the brig of war. Just a good all around ship.

It isn't on the list, the Royal Sloop.

At the moment I prefer a Royal sloop, but I'm wondering about the mail runner. I like the large frigate too, but it's a different style and I want to travel very fast now and still have some punch.

Generally the royal sloop, but the large frigate can be fun for Spanish Main pillaging binges. Mail runners & canoes are great as long as you don't make a mistake against a 40 gun ship, or don't mind re-loading a saved game.
