Heck I've played endless hours with Pirates in highest difficulty starting in 1660 and I have yet to encounter even one SotL. Even after pissing off the Brits badly I only manage to get them to send me a large frigate. Where is that damn SotL???

There are a couple of threads about this in this very forum, and I followed the advice last night and it worked very well for me.

I'm only playing at Journeyman level, but I really don't think that has aught to do with it. Started in 1660, and it's now 1677. The notorious French/English/Dutch/Spanish Duke, Fils d'Emmer, had already inflicted a strong case of Francophilia on Port Royale, so I decided to take him down Barbados' way and see if I could coax a SotL out of the English.

And it worked, pretty much like clockwork. I guess I had a few marks against me from England already, and I just kept beating holy hell out of any and all ships I saw headed to or from Barbados, regardless of the nationality. I figure I can do enough good deeds later to get back in with the French, which is all I'm really worried about at the end of the game.

The progression was very much like what has already been documented here. First they sent out unescorted merchant ships. Then a few sloop escorts. Then the pirate hunters started coming out, and the fort started firing at me, and their ships started calling me a "scurvy pirate!" Then they started sending out fully armed Merchantmen escorted by even-more-fully-armed Frigates. That got kind of rough.

After less than six months of game time, lo and behold the much anticpated "New Warship" was seen coming down from the north, with a War Sloop as its escort. I popped into the French settlement north of Barbados for some quick repairs, and promptly stormed that beast.

Of course now that I have it, I realize I suck with large ship combat. Razz The darn thing takes forever to fire its 438,221 cannons! It is cool to rake a Frigate class vessel with chain shot once and have "The Captain's Tighty Whities" go up the mast, though! Cool

I think one of the keys, as stated by others on here before me, is to focus on only one port for an extended period of time. I personally would recommend Port Royale or Barbados (if available), since those are both important enough to warrant a "SotL Spawn," and they're relatively isolated from other shipping lanes, so it is easy to focus on just their traffic.

The only downer from this excursion is: the damn English took over the town with my wife, so now I'm going to have to sneak into town just to get a snuggle from the Mrs! Or, perhaps the proper Pirates! way would be to just sack the damn thing any time I come to visit. Yarrrrr, me thinks I like that plan! Twisted Evil

They all move back, so that the biggest man in the crowd can step forward. In this case, that would be the "El Pollo Diablo".[/quote]

El Pollo Diablo=The Devil Chicken? That is a funny name for a ship, but I like it.

. . . and to be on topic:

headrock, you're a Super Freak, but I mean that in a good way! I'm impressed. Shocked

You should name one of your Death Fleet Mala Hierba del Diablo, which Babelfish tells me is "Weed of the Devil" (devil weed) in Spanish. Babelfish also recomments Onkruid van de Duivel or Mauvaise Herbe du Diable, should you prefer a different nationality. Wink

Remember kids, Pirates! + Babelfish = stupid fun with names!

There be a horror that prowls the jungles of Plunder Island.
A seven foot tall monster he be! And he has a hatred for mankind, unequalled! His preternatural rage burns hotter than the coals used to roast a million of his kin!

He is... El Pollo Diablo.
The Devil Chicken!

THE DEVIL CHICKEN!!!!

(-- Captain Blondebeard, Restauranteur)

(And no, I don't miss them, I play them. Constantleeee)

That's not entirely correct. It's better to focus on a remote city's traffic because that makes it easier to actually catch the ship if it does come out. However, my strategy worked another way - by giving the English all those cities, I could maximize potential in several towns at the same time, by sinking pretty much everything that travels between them. Granted, I've missed (at least) two SotLs travelling between Antigua and Nevis because of this, but since so many cities were upset with me, no wonder they sent out so many SotLs.
Also make sure to NEVER sink anything that improves cities - not New Governors, not Immigrants, not Military Payrolls or Troop Transports. These will help rebuild cities to "Wealthy", since those are the only ones that send out SotLs. Also remember that the more shipping you destroy, the cities those ships came out of will have their economy rating reduced, so you HAVE to rebuild them. I'd recommend going out to settlements/missions to get newgovs and imms out, but that means you'd be leaving the killing fields, and might miss a SOL.

P.S. I still have a picture of the barmaid telling me I have 370,000 on my head (About 4 years before these screenies were taken Wink). Should I post, or are we done with that subject?

Is this picture from Monkey Island 3? I loved that one. Is the 4th better than the 3rd?

Yes, that's the picture from MI3 (Touched up with Photoshop - it was a bit dark on the top half). I haven't played the fourth one yet, I got mixed reviews from people saying the new 3d gameplay/interface makes things more difficult than fun (This happened with a few games I know, and often has p***ed me off).
Maybe some day I'll play it if someone whose taste in Monkey Island games I respect recommends it very warmly. Just afraid it might ruin my Monkey Island experience (A La Star Control 3 Laughing )
