According to posts on another forum, shortening sails during a ship battle will reduce sail damage when other ship fires chain shot...

That is correct. But if you keep your sails raised and go right after them .. then you don't have to worry about it except one shot maybe hitting you as long as you chose to engage in battle the proper location. |

I thought raising the sails minimized the damage. It would make more sense to raise them to battle position then to lower them to full in avoiding damage. _________________

However, if you are crafty enough or fast enough, you can just charge in under full sails. (You gotta know how! Posted in other threads.)
Reefed sails (sails up, shortened) will help you turn quicker, but sail slower. |

Reefing sails is useful when you feel like being particularly bloody. I do that when I feel like sinking Indian War Canoe's, just because it helps the Sink 100 Ship challenge without costing me any real gold. |

Yeah. There's little challenges in the XBOX version that earn you points towards unlocking bonus content. One of them is to SINK (not capture) 100 ships in a single game. All the challenges listed below:
Defeat Montalban
Defeat all named pirates
Rescue all family members
Retire as an English Baron
Retire as a French Count
Retire as a Dutch Marquis
Retire as a Spanish Duke
Locate all buried treasures
Locate all lost cities
Marry a beautiful Governor's daughter
Sink 100 ships
Plunder 100,000 gold
Locate 10 unique items
Visit all cities
Retire after sacking all cities
Most are pretty easy, so they're not worth getting too excited over. The only ones I haven't done yet are Sink 100 ships and Sack all cities, mostly because I'm a commerce raider type of player (don't sack many cities or sink ships with money on board). |

Heh heh heh. The X-box version is so weird. Anyhow, 100 ships in one game ain't that difficult. Turn the Lesser Antilles to all-english cities except one (montserrat?). Raid the English for about 7 years, sinking anything but Treasure Galleons and Military Payrolls (oh, and improvement ships like Immigrants, Governor, etc). The Pirate Hunters might give you some trouble.
Of course, a SOL is recommended for this, a Large Frigate can handle it fine too. You'll be seeing a SOL at some point though, no doubt. Possibly more. When I got the 1,000,000 bounty on my head, I had a few hundred ships "caputred" and I was sinking things left and right! _________________ Blondebeard: "Madre de Dios! Es el Pollo Diablo!!"
