Purely Piratical Challenge
The Challenge shall run until November 15.

http://www.mediafire.com/?2tmtjhnnxvx
the Rogue savegame file named Plunderin Paul

not the governor,merchant or shipwright.
5. Sneaking into a town is allowed, but only for visiting the tavern.
6. No trainers to be used.
7. Preferably patched to ver 1.02 to even the playing field.
8. No reloads except for technical issues.
Starting in 1660 at Adventurer, named Pyratical Pete
Starting in 1660 at Rogue, named Plunderin Paul
Your special skill is Fencing
Your start as French with a sloop, though you owe no allegiance to the French. You're a pirate.
You must defeat the named Pirates.
Find all pirate treasures.
Rescue all Family members.
Defeat Montalban at his lair.
Amass enough gold for the 24 Wealth Points.
The youngest to reach 68 Fame points wins.
There shall be gold awarded for the top 3 winners.
First place 3000 gold doubloons
Second Place 2000 gold doubloons
Third place 1000 gold doubloons
If you need strategy tips, this challenge has been done before with minor variations. Just do a search for "challenges". One thing you need to be careful about is sailing into port to sneak to the tavern. Even if you have a bounty on your head and they fire cannons as you approach, there are times when that port still lets you sail in. So be sure to always anchor nearby and walk into town. Finding lost cities is not necessary but if you get lucky enough to find one or two or even some map pieces, these points will count towards your 68 Fame points.
Upon completion of your challenge post your ending screenshots in this thread.
To all those participating in the Challenge I would like to add that the following 4 screenshots should be submitted,
Status ( the one with the treasure chest, shows how many months at sea)
Personal Status ( the one with the head shot of the Player_Character)
Top ten Pirates ( The one with the crossed swords and # 10)
Retirement screenshot.
Also please save your game prior to retirement and keep your save game file someplace where it won't get saved over ( desktop, different folder etc...)
Have fun

What would be the points not required in the case of getting a couple points from this? The last few wealth points? _________________

I did a test run of Piratical Pete this past weekend to see what could be expected. I didn't try to complete the challenge as fast as I could have, just tried to get through it trying various strategies so this isn't my official entry. There were at least a dozen instances where different nations would gang up on me as I attacked a ship.
I even had a French flagged Galleon paired with Raymondo's Galleon earlier in the game right after I took Morgan's Large Frigate.
I ran into Sid at a Spanish settlement and Brother Briggs at a Jesuit's settlement. I had the first map piece for Montalbans lair and knew where it was but despite 6 months of searching I couldn't find it. I knew the whereabouts of my Uncle so finally gave up on the idea of getting 3 lost cities and rescued him for another shot at Monty and a second map piece to his hideout. Once I got the second piece of Monty's lair I went back to the same place I had previously searched and there it was big as day. There is no way I would have missed that the first 6 months of searching as it was right there as soon as I climbed the hill that I had previously climbed so many times. I got lucky with finding my Uncle and the first map piece to the first Lost City was one of the easiest in the game with the X and a partial name of a Jesuit's settlement. I had a good idea where my Aunt was after the first map from Raymondo but really needed the extra gold for catching Raymondo 3 more times so I just continued attacking every ship in my path till I caught up with him those last three times. I finally recued my Aunt and got the first map piece to the second Lost City but this proved to be almost useless so had to rely on Gramp's generosity for the second piece. After finding the Second Lost City I was already in my early forties and in poor health but only needed two more wealth points to reach the 68 mark. By attacking every ship and sacking numerous towns it still took another five or more years for that last eighty to one hundred thousand gold for the last two points at the age of 49. Also if you don't care for the "PirateHunter" music in your game, I recommend you remove it, at least for the challenge, from the Assets/Sounds/Music/Sailing folder as it's going to be playing almost continuously.
Here are the final Stats for Pete.
Before dividing plunder for the first time and mandatory retirement.

Thanks, Loki - this sounds like another fun challenge!
If you need help figuring out when you have obtained enough wealth to retire, you can download Waxon Waxov's Wealth Calculator. Go to the Downloads page, select Other, and go to the last item on the list, wax_WealthCalc.xls. It's an Excel file, and you just fill in the blanks to use it. |

Nice, two cities with two map pieces. I got one, wasn't very lucky (didn't even get any X or named landmarks) but I could tell where the coastline was from too many hours of playing the game. I nearly finished the Rogue game (Plunderin Paul) the day after this started, but have been a bit too busy since to do the last bit of gold-collecting. I'm age 32 with just short of 680,000 gold . With one lost city, I need to get to 700,000 gold to have the 20 wealth points I'll need. All other quests are done, so I should be able to retire at age 33 at latet, but there were parts that felt somewhat slow.
I think in this case, the higher difficulty level could be easier in terms of when you finish, since you get an extra 10% when you divide the plunder. You need exactly one million gold without any cities to get 24 wealth points on Rogue (assuming only one plunder division), but over a million on Adventurer just to get 20. _________________

So, Loki. Is it required to stay on the level where you start? Can you start on Rogue and move up to Swash if you are willing to divide the plunder and do well enough to be given the option? I think Capt Riddle is right, wealth is so important in this challenge that the higher level and share might be an advantage.
Looks like another great score Riddle, what is your strategy? |

Hey Tom,
You should stick to the level you start at. I considered doing the difficult one at Swashbuckler, but reading through the other challenge threads played over the years, the same comments keep popping up about the unpredictability, the quirky things like Galleons outrunning your sloop and so on. I think even Novice players can succeed at the Adventurer level and Rogue gives that little extra bit of challenge to the game, stopping just short of the madness of Swash. You do need to get a boatload full o gold for this challenge without the ability to sell of the cargo. Rarely does any Settlement have any more than 100 gold to buy your goods and Pirate havens even less. So you need to attack just about anything that floats close enough for you to catch, relying on the gold they carry. I just finished another try last night, retiring at age 35, again managing to get two lost cities. I think I'll give it one more try though as I think I can do a bit better |

Mine's to get a sloop (Royal preferred) and the route of Raymondo, then gradually make my way towards his destination while grabbing just about every Spanish ship that I see. I try to stay along Colombia and Venezuela for as long as I can, and float around off Panama a lot, too.
For battles I just rely on firing broadsides while looping around to dodge their shots and only board when I won't have to swordfight (usually, when they're flying the white flag from being demasted). And I never keep anything unless I'm expecting to make a pit stop soon after. I also never board Montalban's ship until he's got nobody left on board. I'll sometimes board Raymondo though if I don't feel like taking the time to unload tons of grape into him, since he's so easy to beat.
While I'm in my favoured areas I can usually average about 5-6 ship captures per month; my record so far in one month is 11. _________________

Hey Loki, if you beach to sneak from land, but come too close and unintentionally sail in, is it a violation if you don't visit anything? I assume not, but just noticed that part of your starting post. |

Hey Tom,
This happened to me on my first trial run, so in my current game I made sure I was far enough away that it wouldn't happen and still, it's happened a couple of times especially when trying to sack some of the smaller islands. As long as you sail back out without visiting anyplace we can overlook that as it wasn't done intentionally. |

I'm going to try this myself. It's my kind of challenge: no dancing, no worrying about those pansies that other people called governors getting angry at me for capturing a good 'ol military payroll or merchant, just you and your ship and your crew and your rapier to make your fortune
I thought about trying the rogue one, but I decided that, while adventurer would take longer, I wouldn't have as much risk of getting my sloop sunk while trying to capture some of those ships o' many guns (aka galleons) before I can move in to fight hand-to-hand and massacre their weaklings. I'm going to only do a bit tonight, will post an update tomorrow if I have time to work on the challenge
The Start: I decided that the little triangle between west hispaniola, Port Royale, and Santiago, because every time I have played 1660 the AI has developed a little trading triangle there, depending on who's at war with who - Spanish galleons go south, English ships go northeast, and french ships go wherever their seemingly drunk captains take them (has anybody else noticed how aimlessly they sail around, no matter where they say they're heading?).
Immediately I easily bagged a french brigantine (for no real reason), a trade galleon, and an english military payroll. I docked in a little english settlement for ship repairs and to recruit more crew (something that I was worried about initially), and heard from the barmaid that Bart Roberts was in the region. I thought that bagging a famous pirate early would be a great idea, so I left the settlement and lo and behold! Bart Roberts' ship was right beside mine, so I attacked. To make a long story short, he was a pushover. Not only did I get a nice amount of plunder for the first 5 minutes of the game, but I also got a cook. Not my favourite specialist (Navigator ftw ), but still nice.
Now that the preamble is out of the way, I gtg - more updates soon
EDIT: I played a bit more... outside of Santiago I had an embarassing loss (was beaten by the fatso captain of a Spanish royal galleon and lost my sloop, but captured the galleon with a merchantman), but I wasn't about to give up so soon
Unfortunately, I got captured and put in prison. Time to restart? _________________
