Too many ships, decrease the speed of sailing.
The speed decreases for every two ships you got.
I was advised to keep my fleet to three ships. Then you get some alternatives , as to which ship you will fight with, and you get good speed out of your fleet.
Hope that helps! |

You can't fight with a whole fleet of ships, you only get to use one ship at a time. So keeping an entire fleet of fully upgraded war ships to fight with is a pretty big waste of time, unless you like switching ships a lot.
What I do, and this is purely what I do, I don't know if it's a "best practice" or any of that, is I have one "Flagship", the ship that I'm going to keep for the entire game. It's my best ship and has all the upgrades.
The type of ship varies, depending on what my goals are for that particular game. I'm partial to SoTL's but I also have a warm fuzzy for the Brigs of War. They are both very nice, for very different reasons. Each person has their own favorite ship, make up your own mind about that.
I also keep a "Backup ship". This is usually a ship with most or all of the upgrades that I can use if my Flagship takes a beating in battle and is a bit under a weather. It's usually a Royal Sloop, a Frigate or Brig, something not quite as big and powerful as my Flagship but with enough firepower and upgrades to be worthy of keeping around. When I need to divide the plunder I can sell this one without a twinge, because I have my BoW or my SoTL to start out with after.
The rest of my slots I leave open for "plunder ships", these are ships that I deem worthy of taking back to port and selling for a profit after plundering them. They are actually worth enough to keep in and of themselves as part of the plunder. Usually large ships with upgrades, but don't turn your nose up at a good, well upgraded Royal Sloop. They can sometimes bring in as much or more than an unupgraded Galleon. _________________ 'Vast heaving! Belay there, I say! |

I keep a fleet of ships just because I like to have cargo room for Luxuries, Spices, or whatever happens to be selling well at the time.
I personally keep my fleet size limited to three:
1.) War Canoe or Mail Runner. This is my fast ship for attacking other small, fast ships, and also to use as my Flagship on the main Caribbean map because your fleet moves at the speed of your flagship, only slowing down should one of the other ships in your fleet fall too far behind.
2.) Ship of the Line. I use this for attacking larger vessels.
3.) Treasure Galleon or East/West Indiaman. Purely for cargo room. I hate attacking the Treasure Fleet and not being able to gain any spoils other than the gold that was onboard. |

It depends at least in part on what size crew you can afford to maintain. Each ship in your fleet has a minimum crew size, and those crewmen are not available for boarding or reloading cannons when you're in combat. For this reason, you probably won't want to keep more than one big ship or two small/medium ones early in the game. Later on, after you've accumulated lots o' gold, you can expand your crew and your fleet. But there's rarely a reason to keep more than three vessels - they just slow you down. Always cash in your excess vessels before making a long voyage. |

I'm with Cussler on the first two ships, but the slower galleons or fluyts are never permanent members of my pack. I always sell my excess goods and ships as soon as I accumulate enough- and I'm close to port. Such ship choices are likely a matter of personal tactics and strategy.
One could ignore all but the gold on enemy ships; that way there would be no cargo problem. Funnily, several million doubloons doesn't make your ship an ounce heavier!

My strategy and circumstances change during the course of a game, but here's what I do. I have a flagship, usually a frigate, that I upgrade and do battle with. My second ship is some type of merchantman, preferably an east Indiaman, that I use to haul cargo plundered from other vessels. I will generally have a third ship as backup for the flagship. Something in the sloop class. I use the third ship if the flagship is heavily damaged, or my target is small, like a war canoe. of course, there have been times where I have 4-5 warships in my fleet and huge crews, or 6-7 cargo ships with vast quantities of goods, spices and cannons that I can't sell cuz the merchants are all broke. Anyone else ever get stuck hauling 115 cannon and 287 months of food? |

I'm a miserly pirate who likes to hold out for a high price for his plunder, but even I don't keep that much food!
Usually, rich ports pay well for food and poor ports pay well for cannons, so you should be able to unload one or the other for a decent price.
At some point you need to start selling even if you can't get the price you want. The real profit from trading is in luxuries and spices, so you need to clear out some space in your hold for the more valuable cargo. You'll never get more than 3 gold for a cannon, but you can get 10 or 20 times that for a ton of spices! |

I generally sell all my stuff at the nearest rich port. My main goal is to get right back out to sea, capturing gold and ships. I'm not sailing all the way from Vera Cruz to Barbados to get a good deal on sugar...
I often dump many tons of stuff onto whichever merchant will buy it- and where does he find room for all that stuff, I wonder? Yet another of the mysteries of the Pirates! universe...

I usually get a big fleet together if I'm preparing for some town attacking so that I can get five to six hundred men together. Rest of the time I prefer to stick to one fast ship but sometimes I keep a ship with a nice big cargo hold around to transport my loot. _________________ "Give a man a mask and he will tell you the truth" - Oscar Wilde |

With Triple Hammocks, a Ship of the Line can transport 450 gold-and-plunder-hungry scoundrels all by herself. That's a lot of crew for a single ship- and that ship being the most powerful ship in the game (and with 100 tons of space, lots of storage room). Imagine, if you had eight Ships of the Line, you could have a maximum invasion force of 3600 men!
And a fleet of frigate-class warships would probably scare a governor more than an invasion force of fluyts, but fame and reputation in Pirates! doesn't depend upon the composition of one's fleet... _________________ Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves;

Well, I usually try to keep some smaller ships (like, say, Sloops and/or sometime Brig[antines]) for the food stock - those large crews need to eat, you know. |

But Dave the Knave with this 1 ship, fully outfitted and manned, how many days can you feed those 450 men, with 52 tons of food?
I know that with my fully outfitted and manned Royal Sloop I can feed my 187 men for 6 months with the 40 tons of food I have room to carry.
