Posted: Fri May 25, 2012 11:33 pm Post subject: My Map for Pirates! Sequel |
|
|
Here is the map I envision would be best for a Pirates! Sequel. I know in past sequel related threads I stated that you should only be able to switch regions after dividing the plunder but I now have scrapped that idea and think it should be one large map that you can move about freely at any time. Instead of being a map of the entire world, I have narrowed it down to regions that had much piracy and trade from the 16th to early 19th centuries. Using the entire world would not only be too big, but there would be large wasteful regions where not much trade and shipping was happening. Everything within the thick red line would be the game map. Below I have listed details to correspond with the red numbers in each region.
1. The Caribbean/Spanish Main. This is the traditional Caribbean/Spanish Main/Gulf of Mexico map of SMP. Pretty self explanitory.
2. South America/Brazil. In this game map, you would be able to go much farther southeast along the coast of South America. Most of this coast would be Brazil. Brazil is famous for the Amazon River, and the Amazon Rainforest. At the time it was under Portuguese rule and had large native populations. This would allow for more native interaction, more lost cities, and the inclusion of the Portuguese in the game. You could sail for them or attack their ports and shipping. The far eastern tip of Brazil would also give you the quickest and shortest jump across the Atlantic (to Western Africa).
3. Eastern North America. This region in the east coast of North American which would include the American and Canadian colonies. Plenty of pirate activity and shipping coming from both Africa and Western Europe.
4. Exterior Western Europe. This area would be a hotbed of European shipping activity. You would also occasionally encounter Ottoman Corsairs/Barbary Pirates.
5. The Mediterranean. With Western Europe to the west, Southern Europe to the north, The Barbary Coast to the south, and the heart of The Ottoman Empire to the east this would be one of the most exciting regions on the map. It would be highly populated with both European shipping and Ottoman Corsairs/Barbary Pirates. The Ottoman Empire would be another new nation in the game that you could sail for or against. Since the Mediterranean gives you access to places like Rome (Italy), Greece, and Egypt this provides opportunities for more lost cities and priceless artifacts that could be discovered by the player. The possibilities are endless.
6. Indian Ocean. This region was a famous haunt for pirates during the Golden Age of Piracy. Madagascar was a home base for many and would be a focal point of this region in the game, as would be The Mughal Empire. The Mughals would be another nation you could sail for or against although you would most likely sail against and loot them. They were well known for transporting treasure across the Indian Ocean. See this article about pirates plundering The Ganj-i-Sawai. There would also be a heavy British presence in this region as well as some other European nations and some Ottoman presence as well.
7. Western Africa. This would be one of the least active areas on the map but would be necessary to navigate to get to Madagascar and The Indian Ocean. You would often encounter slave ships, allowing you to capture them than free slaves and take them on as crew. European and Ottoman shipping would also be present but more sparsely than other regions of the map.
Post your thoughts below and let me know what you think of my map ideas! I'm eager to hear feedback. _________________

The big problem is one you touched on at the end: slavery. The Barbary pirates were infamous for capturing not just gold, cargo, and ships, but human beings, whom they either held for ransom or sold as slaves. It's easy to gloss over slavery in a Caribbean setting, where the pirates were not generally slavers, but not so much in a Mediterranean setting. And any semi-realistic treatment of Mediterranean slavery would court controversy because of the historic religious affiliation of the Barbary pirate-slavers.
OTOH, I like the fact that the treasure fleet could actually return to Europe instead of vanishing around Bermuda. |

Yeah I guess the only "PC" way to handle it would be to automatically free any slaves on board a ship you capture, with the option to take them on as crew if they volunteer. Of course this would be unrealistic and historically inaccurate especially if you're playing as a Barbary Pirate because as you said slavery, especially white slavery, was their big thing. Pirates often freed African Slaves and allowed them to become crew but they also sometimes sold them at port which would be a no no for the game I'm sure. Leaving slavery out completely would be weird though. Maybe your lost relatives would be captured by Barbary Pirates instead of Evil Spaniards in this version.
Maybe the backstory of your character would be that he is an escaped slave himself and vehemently anti-slavery. That could explain why any slave you capture is automatically freed... _________________

I see a #8 in the pacific / china sea area. Maybe even more than 1 sub area.
This map makes me think of the Master and Commander series. How he sailed all over the world and encountered pirates / privateers all the time in each of these areas in the different novels.
I could see a "sequel" of pirates play along that theme. Instead of 1660, make it 1780-1820. You would be a privateer who would negotiate letters of marque or facing hanging...
You could be commissioned by one of the nations or a rich company like East India Trading Co to escort a convoy to any of these areas.
Newer ships, many more maps/currents adventures to go on.
oh well. back to reality and work now... |

Thanks for the feedback Davy, and those are some good ideas. I haven't read/seen the Master and Commander series but I suppose I should read up on it! _________________

Here is one novel, #6 of 20, mapped out:
http://www.cannonade.net/map.php?The_Fortune_of_War
It was during the war of 1812 and he (as the British) fought against the USS Constitution among other battles.
The ones that centered around the oiling battles are later and havent been mapped by this site yet.
If you like the adventure aspect of SMP, then these novels are a must. |

Sinking entire ships killing hundreds of men in one fight is not questionable, but slavery is?
I see your point but I don't agree. Silent Hunter series, for example, lets you play a German U-boot captain for example. If you look at it from my grandfather's point of view, who was a war sailor himself and watched ships around him sunk by the German subs the game itself is horrific. Would you suggest that those games shouldn't have been released?
I could go on about games that touch upon controversial stuff from time to time but the point is that there has to be some sense to it all. Slavery was (and is) bad by all means, but so is murder, raping and pillaging. I'd say the latter is possibly even worse and that would exclude 75% (?) of all games released?
EDIT: Didn't notice the thread was this old.. it was on the first page so I didn't really check. Sorry. |

Not at all. But such controversial matters would be hard to reconcile with the overall tone and PG rating of Sid Meier's Pirates. This game does not even have tobacco and rum as cargo, let alone slaves! |

There are Rum and Tobacco.. it's called goods. Maybe the slaves are already there under Luxuries...? |

I think slaves are actually "spices", sad to say. It is the same number of letters, they are high value, pirate ships carry them, and prices are particularly high in Barbados. |

Good point.
Anyway, we just explained a very good way to have certain settings and avoiding certain subjects while actually not excluding them =) |
