If true, then there may be a single bit in the savegame file that makes you invincible (a never been to battle bit), which might mean that you could set it at any time by hacking the savegame file.
I'll have to try this out. |

It's more like invulnerability to cannon fire. Your ship can take point blank broadsides all day with no damage.
The effect does not help for fencing.
It only applies at difficulty level Adventurer or below.
In the pst file (text version of savegame file), the relevant data is:
t_7_1 : V4 : 0 : 0 before first pirate point
That comment is wrong - 0 means invulnerable to cannon, and does not depend on pirate points. To test, I carefully traded to make some money, bought a pirate treasure map, and found a treasure to gain a pirate point without losing invulnerability.
You lose invulnerability by fencing another ship's captain - if you sail away without boarding the enemy ship, you retain invulnerability. I didn't test what happens if you board an Indian or Jesuit ship that doesn't fight back, or the various other ways you could get into combat without boarding a ship.
Once I tried a game where I was going to make money only by trading. I found that I could gain ranks by visiting settlements, escorting the mayor - closing with the privateers but then running away from them. That causes the privateers to disappear, allowing the mayor to get to his destination. I may have been getting a boost from this invulnerability to cannon fire effect - it's easier to run away if they can't tear up your sails. |

I never suspected!
Well, it's just good game design. Finding yourself beached or jailed on your first mission would be very frustrating.
I've played games that don't make it easy to learn the ropes through playing, and don't make it easy to read how to do it either.
A great game is easy to take up, and difficult to master. While I lament the lack of modability, Pirates! is probably the best game I've ever bought, considering those criteria, along with the manual and the 'Pedia . |

I did not notice - but it makes sense - hopefully that first ship you come across is a Ship of The Line |

But aren't they hard to spawn without actually fighting any sea battles?
They aren't as hard to fight & capture as war canoes, just harder to find. |

Yes they are hard to find - just wishful thinking. |
