I have a question - what sword do you think is best? I use a rapier, but I hear on Swash a cutlass is the way to go. What do you guys think, and why do you use the sword you use? Thanks! |

I have always stayed with the rapier - especially on swash. I know that the cutlass is supposed to be a better defensive weapon, but I don't think I could cope with Monty, who has a rapier, or the English captain of the guard. |

Yeah, same here. I accidentally used a Cutlass on Monty, got whipped, and had to go all the way across Mexico again... with my rapier I got him back though |

Save the game before the fight .. sometimes cutlass will be better (lose less men), i don't know why though .. but 85 % of the time i use rapier ..
I haven't figured out the formula for losing your men in fight yet but it looks random. I will give two examples :
1. The second ship i got when i began my game was a frigate. I fought enemy captain and won, never taking a hit from him and always hitting him on my attack (I had 50 men, he had 200 - it was dutch invasion force on a frigate) ..
End result = I lost 6 men and got a frigate, heh
I had to redo it few times though, by loading game ..
2. Later on in the game .. I fought enemy captain and won, never taking a hit from him and always hitting him on my attack (I had 200 men, he had 50 .. End result = I lost 30 men and got a ship
I had to redo it few times though to make it perfect, by loading game ..
++ Some hints i recently found out.
1. If you hold button - or + it will zoom in pr zoom out while sailing your ship, making a much larger area visible if you max zoom out.
2. If you hold button for slash, thrust or chop after selecting your sword .. 70 % of the time you will immediately hit the opponent skipping the beginning animation of a duel.
3. If you hold only slash the entire duel on rogue, with rapier and fencing shirts and balanced swords you are always faster than opponent .. even faster then his thrust or if he evades or defends. |

I almost always use the cutlass, which allows me to defend successfully even against fast opponents on Swashbuckler. (My style is defend and counterattack.) I sometimes use the longsword against Montalban in his lair, though, because it is fast enough on offense to hit him, but I can still manage to counterattack. |
