|
|
First off, is it possible to appoint a new governor to the landlocked cities of Gran Granada, Panama, and Puerto Principe? I imagine you can attack them by walking a crew there like any other city. However, a garrison with 500 soldiers is nothing to sneeze at.
Also, is there any benefit to taking them from the Spanish? As in, is it possible for Monty or Raymond to even show up there if they are of the few remaining Spanish cities?
I am currently playing a game in which I have taken over all coastal Spanish cities for the French or Dutch with the exception of San Juan and Vera Cruz. Vera Cruz will fall soon. Yarr!
I am just wondering if it's worth the effort or if it's even possible to attack/replace governance of the landlocked cities. |

Something else strange to note: A bartender once told me about a ship upgrade I could get at Gran Granada. On an older trip there, I remember seeing the shipwright option grayed out and unavailable. What gives? |

Yes, it's doable.
Like anything else in the game, doing the same thing over and over can get tiresome.
But it's one of those things that you might want to do once to say you've done it. Or if you're really a Civilization player ( like me ), more than once.
Bear in mind that while you're marching to Grand Granada, and fighting 3 battles to capture it, the Spanish may have captured Florida. So conquering the map isn't as simple as it seems.
But if you do succeed in taking away all of the port cities from the Spanish, and there are still villains spawning, they will fly a different flag. |

I should clarify that I plan on leaving San Juan to the Spanish. I imagine that way Monty and Raymond will only spawn around that area. I am on Rogue difficulty.
Thanks for info. All cities that I have captured for the French and Dutch have remained so happily. I may experiment with leaving the landlocked cities be and see how that effects villain spawning. |

Since the EVIL villains always sail from one city to another, I think they require at least two Spanish cities in order to remain Spanish. If San Juan is the only Spanish city left, I suspect they will become French. The only question is whether this will happen immediately or only after they have reached and departed San Juan.
You cannot obtain ship upgrades at a landlocked city (or a city on the Pacific coast) because you can't get your ships there. In fact, I don't think you can ever buy upgrades if you march into a town. But every city has an upgrade assigned to it - even landlocked cities.
As jlangsdo discovered a few years ago, only three upgrades are available to each city. At the beginning of the game, one of the three is assigned for that game. The upgrade corresponds to the beauty level of the daughter. Thus, if you know what upgrade a city offers you can infer the daughter's beauty level - and vice versa. Details here:

Taking over a city and installing a Governor of a nation that is at war with that city gives you a promotion on the spot. It is a wildcard promotion. You also get gold for sacking the city. Plus it resets the Daughter to beginning level and you can dance with her and give her a Ruby ring.
You cannot take over the city in which your wife is from, it won't let you.
You cannot take over a city you previously took over unless another city conquers that city after you installed a Governor.
That thread Roland refers to is one of the best we've ever had on this board. There is a follow-up to that thread in which we all teamed up to create a chart that shows City Name, what upgrades are offered there. Once that is known you will automatically know which type of daughter is in that city (Plain, Attractive, Beauty) BEFORE you visit the city. Sometimes this is important. |

I need to print out/transcribe that chart and have it open as I play. That would be handy. _________________ The Code is the Law. |

jlangsdo's original list of the cities in canonical order is at the link I posted above.
My explanation of the relationship between beauty and upgrades, along with your completed chart can be found on the second page of this thread:

Thank you all for the input. Roland, I appreciate the heads up on keeping two Spanish cities. I went ahead and gave St. Kitts to the Spanish. Hopefully this will keep the villains sailing between neighboring cities.
The ship upgrade/daughter beauty relation is quite interesting. Thanks for pointing me to the right thread. I will definitely check that out next time I play. |
