I'm new here but I've been reading a lot of posts saying that "Sloop of war" is the best ship blah blah blah. Why not use the royal sloop? |

Because often they are hard to find... And Sloops of War are pretty decent too. |

I prefer Royal Sloop. She's the best among the little ships. _________________ I don't have a drinking problem, 'cept when I can't get a drink. Tom Waits |

I too prefer the royal sloop. The easiest way to get one is find Roc Brasiliano and take his. It usually comes with three upgrades. I have noticed the Spanish are the most likely to send pirate hunters in royal sloops after me but that is the only other way to get one. Knock off Roc and take his or get a nation mad enough to send one against you. By the way, I prefer taking pirate hunters' ships, they usually have better upgrades and I don't have to spend the money or sail around to get them. |

Almost every escort mission on swashbuckler difficulty has you escorting a royal sloop. And I believe two of the top 10 pirates are also on fully loaded royal sloops. |

Ship of the line!
Best ship if you just want to blow sh*t up AND have better speed than any galleon!!!
Love it. Plus the prestige in actually getting one to spawn is nice! |

Depends on how you like to play.
I've become pretty fond of the mailrunner. I can circle the enemy and pepper them with chain till they realize whats best for business |

Right now I have what I think is as ideal a combination as you can get. My flagship is the Large Frigate Adventure Galley, and my "safety net" is a Royal Sloop.
The only problem with Adventure Galley is that with forty guns, you have to be careful not to accidently sink a ship you want to board. You also have to maintian a large crew to keep her working at optimal capacity. But, she's fast, maneuverable and can take a lot of punishment too. Further, the large crew is very useful in boarding actions and land battles.
Though for the most fun when it comes to sea battles, the Royal Sloop wins hands down. _________________ ...ye have me affey-davey on that. |

Well, I found a SoTL this game very early and have sailed her all the way to retirement. I'd take one again because the firepower and speed are excellent and the maneuverability is decent but there is a catch. You can't catch the smaller faster ships in battle. Its pretty difficult if they have even the slightest wind advantage to get your ship into gear as fast as they can. If they don't want to be boarded, they're gone. Fortunately there are plenty a Royal Sloop pirate hunter who think they can best me at swordplay. They are all wrong |

It's a little cumbersome, but until I see a Ship of the Line I'm perfectly happy with the tricked-out War Galleon that my buddy Raymondo gave me yesterday. I've sent a lot of sloops, Royal and otherwise, to Davy Jones' locker with one or two well aimed round shot blasts. For extended periods of play I'll find a Merchantman to tag along as a backup ship, but that's rare. _________________ Avast ye scurvy bilge-rats! Strike yer colors and perpare to be boarded. How do you find Ships Of The Line, anyways. I've been looking all over for one. |

You are absolutely right, Pinnace (or mailrunner). the only real pirate ship. It is a galleon killer. That is the best tactic to pepper them with chain until the masts broke, then change to grapes and kill most of the crew and they surrender. When you dont fence you stay healthier
And thats the tactic which many real life pirates used too. |

You gotta be real lucky. The best clue I ever got was to look for "New Warship", they look EXACTLY like a frigate. Obviously, the Spanish never have any. So far, have only ever found one. |

Until you can get one to spawn, Large Frigates aint too bad.
There are times when I am chasing something for long periods where I am like "Heck with it, the satisfaction of seeing you blow up will be greater then boarding you." |
