There haven't been many pirate-themed games in the last decade, although perhaps 'ever' would be more accurate.
Still, 'not many' isn't the same as none at all.
A few years ago we saw Sea Dogs arrive on the scene which was recently followed up by its 'unofficial' sequel Pirates of the Caribbean. Both games were pretty good but both were plagued by bugs and an overall lack of polish. Had they received more care they would quite possibly have been masterpieces.
The sequel to Tropico called "Pirates Cove" was recently released too, bringing 'empire management' with a distinct pirate flavour to it to our screens.
Trading-strategy game Port-Royale touched upon the theme a little. So little in fact that it might not deserve mention here.

I found a pirate game that is still in Beta on www.worldofpirates.com . I did not play the pirates games of Sid but this game seems to be something like the Pirates! gold. Or am i wrong?
I'm not in that Beta yet but it seems fun. _________________ Cutlass Isle Staff |

MarkQuinn mentioned Cutthroats. I've heard of it and tried to get it some time ago but never could get my hands on it. It made enough of a name for itself to be mentioned here though. |

Possibly.. Didn't nr. 4 just come out?
I like the first and second best. After the ending in Monkey Island II a sequel seemed only ridicoulous _________________ Look behind you! A three headed monkey! |

There was a game called "Pirates of the Barbary Coast" I had at one time on my C64. Wasn't as good as Pirates!, but was fun in its own way. |

Here's a list of all of the Pirate-themed games that I know of.. Though of the games I've played, the only game that captures the magic of Pirates! is in fact, Pirates!
Pirate/Privateer Based (or open ended)
Cutthroats
Corsairs
Sea Dogs
Monkey Island Series (fictional, humorous)
Pirates of the Caribbean (PC/xbox.. the GBA version is a completely different game.. and is more or less a fantasy based action game)
Tropico (the pirate version )
Pirate Hunter/Tortuga
Port Royale
Pirates - Legend of Black Kat (fantasy console game)
Trade focused, but has pirates
Patrician 3 (set in the middle ages)
Sea Trader: Rise of Taipan (gamebody advance)
Coming soon
Galleon (xbox fantasy action game I think)
Pirates of the Burning Sea
Port Royale 2 |

Either that was a guest or someone who forgot to sign in.
Welcome ye guest and DOH to whomever forgot to log in.
I will have to say The legend of Black Kat was a fun game I played on the PS2. It was in full 4.1 surround sound and had land battles and Sea battles with options of upgrading your ship and upgrading ships. Been awhile since I played but forgot about it until when I read that post. Figutrf I would say good game and good story line with it. Still not my Pirates! game |

i know one too corsairs gold you can choose from a few nations: dutch england spanish french.
and you start with a little ship and you have to do all kind of missions from governours of the nationality you chose one time i got to attack a galleon with 600 men and i had just a ship with 200 man then the game is very unfair but if i kept al the ships i had stolen and didn't sell them i would have enought to get the ship.
if you are the french you for the most have to upgrade all you city's becaus they have very much city's already but they are all very weak.
you have to upgrade the lighthouse and governours house and cannons and drydock where you can build ships.
but you also can just egnore the missions and go plundering all ships you come across that is much more fun |

Ya, I had checked this out a while back. Having played other MMORPGs and been involved in betas for them) I was interested in how they will make this work (Logging off in the middle of a voyage, losing your ship, alliances...). I plan to keep my eye on it just to see where it goes and how it turns out because it is definetly a new genre for MMORPGs (as far as I know).
I really have never been able to get over how few games there are that cover, not necessarily pirates, but ship warfare of this era.
Heres one for ya... How about Ancient Art of Wat at Sea? You could argue that it had Pirates as one of the AI personas was Blackbeard I think. Regardless, my opoint is that something like that is pretty simple for todays standards and could be remade into something so fun. _________________ "Beware the Death Star! This mighty ship roamed the C64 version of Pirates! Most disagree that a bug or some misplaced code created it, but I know better... Why you ask? Because I have seen it! And I tell you no Pinnace can carry 84(?) cannon!" |
