I get this. My specs are

Athlon XP1700+
Radeon 9800Pro
512MB Ram (PC3200 - dual channel ram)
Nforce2 mobo.
80 WD 8mb HDD
DVD Version

I've had this happening now, too. Although it went fine first.

But I think I found the reason in my case. I had installed the game "Neverwinter Nights" before I started noticing the slowing down game. After I uninstalled the game again, Pirates was working fine without the slow down.

Could it be a programm related issue?

1) First I get an error wtih the DVD ROM version of the disk not being detected sometimes. But this only happens sometimes. Reinstalling did not solve this issue.

2) When you get an enemy ship down to 1 man and it has no sails, it should not be able to "Sail off into the distance". This happened to me when I faught Baron Raymondo several times. Saying you beat Raymondo's ship up, there is going to be goods and crew in the water so you go to sail around and pick up his stuff. But if you do that , even if his ship has no guns, 1 crew member, and no sails he can still sail away. When you try to chase the ship with no sails it sails away faster than you can catch it with full sails. When he gets to a Spanish port he refurbs his ship and adds over 100 crew members at once. This is not how it should work. When you disable a ship it should sit there. Because when your ship is disabled you cant run away like that.

3) You should get the option to accept or decline escorting the mayor or govenor to his new town.

4) There should be other ways to find ancient cities rather than wooing the governor's daughter. Not every pirate or explorer was a married man. Its not very plausable to search the coast for lost cities either, as your crew gets restless very fast if you dont take over something or blow something up. (I have the three stringed fiddle and the quartermaster and they still get unhappy quickly.)

5) Land battles: Officers should have guns, horses or some other advantage. Ie. they should not be the weakest members of your team.

@Cappin_Russ: Concerning your point 5, I must say that the officers already are your, in some sense, strongest unit and by no means the weakest. The pirates are weaker by far and buccaneers are only strong if backed up by the other units.

But I like the idea of the officers also having a ranged attack, perhaps only two squares, but still a ranged attack... Perhaps with pistols...

Completely agree with point three, you must be abble to choose what you want to do,

Regarding point five, I cannot imagine a pirate sloop carring horses for the officers, so i thik the attack skill of ooficiers is strong enough to crush any soldiers anywhere.

Btw, remember to state which version (european / american, regular / limited, cd /dvd) you have, since some of the bugs only occur in certain versions.

For instance, the multi-gold on ships from eliminated nations only occurs in american versions of Pirates..... I must admit I think it is utter foolishness of Firaxis to make several different versions of the game, as it'll make thier patch-work that much harder.... but anyhow, it's a great game.... but still, patch it please Smile

Agree with previous posts, especially these three thoughts:

1) Disable animation in land battle, takes WAY too long, 2) have an option to NOT escort a mayor, 3) have an editable txt list to add enemy names, etc

Would also like to...
Speed up international water travel...we get the idea that it took a long time to cross...if you want it simulated...just allow us to move across fairly expeditiously, but run the day counter faster....that way it keeps the game moving quickly but still takes into account the length of time it would take to get across

have option to disable the running up and down the steps on ship swordfight battles...gets annoying if he runs the steps, then you get hit, and he chases you on the steps...then you hit him - back and forth you go...now if I was a better swordfighter in my late 30's this wouldn't be a problem, but... Smile

How about a little intelligible language? Not much, just a little. You go to the governor and hear grunts and groans...and that's it. I don't want an old and overweight man grunting at me. As long as there are only four countries maybe we could even get a few std phrases in each language, depending on which port you are in. Maybe that is too much for a patch and would have to be worked on as a mod by a fan who is much more knowledgable about that sort of thing than am I.

Just a few thoughts...o/w great game!!

I have to say that I disagree with this point, if the aim is to have less _real time_ pass when sailing between ports. The ships already move relatively fast on the map and any faster would destroy the feel that you are onboard a sail ship. Speeding up the land battles and sneaking sequences would be enough for me.

On the other hand, I agree with the notion that less _game time_ should pass when you sail on the open waters. Crossing the Caribbean did not take months in real life. However, if the programmers want the character to age in the current manner, one could add longer stays in ports if the player wants to, for example, fix up a ship that has been completely shot apart (let alone a few of them). In real life such work would have taken weeks if not months, so why not in the game? (Optionally, one could let the character do something while his ships are being repaired - perhaps even go to capture new ones.)

Simply add a time compression fucntion. 'Sea Dogs' used the function and it worked out pretty well. Just hold down the key and everything fast forwards as long as your holding down the key, EVERYTHING including pasing ships, so its not something you would want to use constantly. Time will continue to pass at its increased rate as well as food consumption and so on. The only thing is I'd disable the function during combat. Just a thought.

Yes, meant open water...as in Santiago down to Cartagena or St. Kitts...and Campeche to anywhere for that matter.
Time compression would be a great solution, as described by Rook...wouldn't think it would be that hard to patch for...didn't they even have that in the Microprose days with Silent Service and the like? I still remember the old end around maneuvers like it was yesterday...

Was your disk close to full? Also it coul be some wacky system setting they set.

I am very dissapointed with Pirates, not because of the game itself but because of the bugs and nasty crashes. I have searched all over the internet and I have witnessed the complaints of thousands of people who bought the game, apparently the crashes were due because their SVGA video card was not T&L compatible. I would like to know if they are going to fix this, this game is great and I would hate to return it, but if nothing is done, they leave me without a choice.

P.S. I am running a laptop, i guess all laptop users are doomed to not playing this game. I have the American version by the way.

Well, the game requirements DO say that you have to have a T&L compatible graphics card, so that's not really a bug.

Also, laptops run the game just fine. Mine does, at least (Acer Travelmate 800). There's a thread about it somewhere around here, too (Pirates! doesn't run on laptops, I think it was called)

I wouldn't call an additional free 200 Gigabyte close to full. Wink

It's working fine again meanwhile. I started a new career though, so probably it was just a glitch in the current save game.

Nowhere Near Full, and It is not all the time just sometimes where we both fire at once, and usually when we are a fair distance apart. And No Neverwinter nights

Hi,

I dont think this issue has been discussed in this thread:
on my comp, and on many others according to what I read on the internet, the game crashes VERY often.
I mean on 2 saved games, I cant simply play. The game gets loaded and then it crashes, back to the desktop.
I think this is related to something to display in the scenery, because it always crashes at the same time.

This makes the game implayable and so far, I have thrown away 60 EUR for a game I cant play to at all.

The concerned configs are:
Panasonic R2B:
Pentium M 1000
Intel i855GM
40 Gb toshiba hdd
512 mb ram
win xp pro sp1 all updates done except sp2, drivers up to date as well

Panasonic W2C:
Pentium M 1100
Intel i855GM
60 Gb hitachi hdd
512 ram
xp pro sp1 up to date, sp2 not applied, drivers up to date

Please get me out of that annoying issue :'(
