They appear in all levels.
They look like frigates.
Usually appear as "New Warship"

Since they are frigates, they never fly the Spanish flag.

This means that the only time you will find then near a Spanish city is when they are attacking it.

To the best place to hunt for one is near any city that is not Spanish.

I think you can find one on the easy level, but it might take awhile. Just hang around an English, French or Dutch port and attack all nearby ships of that nation. But you're better off on higher difficulty.

Try the Antilles (St. Martin, St. Kitts area) if you haven't changed nations there yet and attack anything that moves that is not Spanish nationality. Sooner or later somebody will send a SOTL after you.

I've also found that the Caracas/Curacao/Maracaibo area is a good place if you have changed nationalities of Caracas and Maracaibo from Spanish.

I had two SOTLs in apprentice modus, one after 7 years and another after 13 years of game time. But I was heavily picking on the English (respectively French) at that time.

Just don't sink any governor's ships. Only wealthy cities produce SotLs.

Don't have much to add except today I finished ANOTHER "capture 8 SOLs" game. 1660, Rogue difficulty. It's possible with Journeyman and Apprentice too, the difficulty seems to have no effect on the frequency of SOL captures. Only playing style does.

P.S. there are several of my posts on how to increase the chance of finding an SOL, or how to set up a game where SOLs are produced with enough frequency to capture 8 of them.

I still have yet to match you. The most I have been able to get is five.

Two words: Raise Hell. Pick a nation other than Spain and strangle their shipping until you get a nice bounty on you and they send s SOTL to hunt you down. Twisted Evil

Huh? can anybody confirm this? I had two spawning in a row from Martinique in my last game, and the city was poor on the lowest city level. Would that be a poor trading post in English?

Skeptical about this myself.

Always seems that any city/village can spawn any class of ship appropriate for their nation. Just seems that the SotL is quite rare. This implies that any settlement can spawn any ship based on their own native probabilities.

Somebody noticed that any ship originating from a City has an escort, and most military vessels arrive as "New Warship". A New Warship SotL from a Village will therefore not have an escort, where one from a City (with a Governor) will have an escort.

I've never seen SOLs spawn out of a non-wealthy city, and I've seen more than a few of them (SOLs, I mean, not non-wealthy cities). However, a certain percentage of them came from off-screen, so who knows. I always thought it was Barbados. Wink

By the way rupert, enemy ships spawn escortless from cities regularly - it's only the cities that are specifically upset with you (because you've been hurting them specifically, either by direct assault or by attacking their outgoing merchant shipping) that send out escorted ships. Simply put, a trade-route with more risk factor tends to see more escorted ships.

I've found a good place to hang around to find a SotL is the Tortoga, Port-de-Paix, Leogane, Peite-Goave Area. (probably only in the 1640, 1660, & 1680, otherwise there's too few cities in the area) usually they have a few settlements or missions in the area, so you can kill time while waiting for one to appear and keep the cities at prosperous/wealthy while you're waiting.
