I've been reading the MOD FLAG post and it talks about a surrender flag. I initially thought that they ship would run up such a flag when it gave up but have n'ted actually seen it in game play. Can someone give me a hint as to what I should be looking for.

That's easy, look at the flag the ship is using. If you unmast it by use of alot of chain shot they surrender... they sometimes surrender if you shoot off all their guns. Anyway, their flag turns white when they've surrendered Smile

Kristian95 is correct in that the flag for surrender is white. I have had many ships surrender with out putting up the white flag though. When I board them they just offer the sword of surrender. Maybe thats a bug or something? I generally expect a sword fight if they don't raise the white surrender flag when I board an enemy ship. I remember in the first game when the white flag went up it was surrender. No white flag, no surrender and a sword fight. This new game is different. Anyone else notice this?

I've had the "no white flag" surrender too.... I'm sure that's (another) bug.... but no matter, the game still rules Smile Of course I hope all the bugs'll get dealed with by Firaxis Very Happy

Chain them to death, they always surrender. Maybe not escort ships.

Is there a specific shot number for the different types of ships? I was always curious as to how many it takes. Also, what about sinking? I never took the time to count and usually stop after there ship begins to get a little too raggedy.

Yes, sometimes it happens. But sometimes you can see the white flag but they don't surrender! It occures when you fight against a named pirate or the Mendoza brothers or Baron Raymondo or Senior Montabal. You get the surrender screen with the captain on his knees, but after that you have to swordfight the enemy in spite of the surrender.

You can sink almost any ship with two nice frigate volley (32 gunns), at least barques or sloop.

That is a combonation of a lot of different things. What ship you are using and how many guns, what shot are you using, and how good of a gunner are you, then you look at what your target ship is. If you are trying to sink a War Galleon with grape from a 12 gun sloop, your going to be there all day. Its pretty safe to say, most of the merchantile vessels are pretty low on the durabilty side of things though. With the 40 gun Lg Frigate, which I use as soon as I can pry Morgans dead cold hands off the helm, I've seen a War Galleon go down in 3 solid direct hits.......which isnt always a good thing when your trying to make Port Royale from Campeche and you run out of food out in the middle of no where. Confused
You can chain a ship into submission though with only a few well placed shots, and sometimes, if you are terribly out gunned and out manned, its the way to go since you wont have to board and draw steel. The only exception to that is if its an EVIL ship! You can chain it all day and you will still have to face the evil doer and your crews will still go at it, which is a bad thing when your in that terribly out manned situation.

Regarding the named pirates, at least up to journeyman level (the middle level) if they surrender with white flag, you don't have to fence them!!! Smile I have done that many a time, by chain shooting them to surrender Smile

I think the middle level is the Adventurer. But it's not important anyway. I don't know if its' a bug or it depends on the level. Does anyone know the answer? (Yes, I know: 42. Smile Have you ever read The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy?)

If I may hazard a guess... being a Duke and all.

(now that was stretching for a pun)

Seems to me that you've got a bug on your hands. (amazement all around)

I've never been denied the old steel dance with a named pirate.. even having experienced probably a couple smooth dozen full play-throughs.

I usually skip the pre-post animations whenever possible... how many times can you watch that same cargo box, carelessly left hanging there in the yards during a boarding action, swoop down and cold-cock the dumb-butt pirate captain-of-the-moment? (very sloppy bosun, if you ask me. if his next performance appraisal included a little visit to the keel he might just shape up a tad)

Oh, and Zem... you appear to me to be a swab who really knows where his towel is.

Yep...all five books of the trilogy! All hilarious, except the last one which left me with a bitter aftertaste. I definitely have to get these books again, as the ones I had are keeping company to a dear friend of mine in his final resting place. And this time I'll get the english versions. If I laughed my ass off with the greek ones, I'm afraid my intestines will crawl up my esophagus and strangle my brain from the laughter with the original ones!

Okay, on the European normal CD version I've had it happen several times now that the white flag came up, I got the surrender screen and yet I had to do the sword fight.

All were merchant ships. I could have kind of understood if it were invasion forces or something. But merchant ships??
