I have always praised the war canoe. but recently I attacted a Tresure Galleon but my war canoe was severly damaged. I was then Forced to use the galleon to attack the spanish pirate hunters. I am now awed by its power. has anyone else fell for this behemeth. I hate how slow it turns though. _________________ Broadsides are stupid. Whats the point of both ships being damaged. If you evade them only they will be damaged. |

My nine-year-old nephew loves Treasure Galleons. When the time came for him to divide the plunder (or, as he and his brother call it, the plunger), he kept the Treasure Galleon, even though I tried to tell him the Large Frigate was better. |

The treasure galleon is a great thing, but I don't use them frequently. _________________ Every time you capture a SoL a kitten dies. So please sink the SoLs |

I was always thinking of trying a Treasure Galleon as a flagship. If you intercept the Treasure Fleet, you get one with Copper Plating and Cotton Sails, so at least it's a bit faster and more maneuverable than a random Treasure Galleon. I think I'll try it out next time I snag one. |

That's the great thing about the game, you get to make your own choices - whether or not they make sense in terms of conventional strategy. My daughter always escorts immigrants when the brother asks - and refuses to betray her chosen nation - usually France. |

I love CAPTURING them but i rarely use them in combat. It takes like an A bomb to sink them, though. _________________ Go Fishing.

Galleons as your weapon of choice? Some of ye are brave, methinks. I doubt I'll be using a galleon to take on any enemy, though.
Galleons turn slowly and pick up speed slowly. Aye, they can take a lot of damage, but they can be taken by virtually any opposing ship.
The frigate class of ships is their worst enemy. Galleons can't outrun them, can't outmaneuver them, and seldom outgun them.
On the lower skill levels, a galleon might be a lot of fun to use...like a fluyt, I suppose. But on the higher levels, they are best as prey, not a predator...unless ye galleon-gallants are really, really good players. _________________ Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves;

It seems that even then, rupert championed the War Canoe...

This has inspired me. I'm going to start a new game, capture a treasure galleon, and see what I can do with it. I once played with a fully upgraded east indiaman as my flagship for a while and did pretty good, at least against non military targets. The larger warships did some damage, but the merchant class vessels were easy prey. |

Using a Treasure Galleon as a flagship sounds like a very SLOW way to achieve great new levels of...
Slowness.
It would take you forever just to get anyplace.
I guess if you're not in a hurry...
I've always assumed the captains of these ships were being punished for some great evil they perpetrated in their past.
Why else would you ever want to captain one of those things?
Even with cotton sails and copper plate, these ships can't get out of their own way!
I'll give them this though, they can take a licking and keep on ticking.
You almost can't sink the things.
Almost.
That said...
I did capture one last night and take it out for a test drive.
My wife woke me up about two hours later. I was still in front of the screen, and I had almost gotten her sailed out of port...

I use treasure galleons so I can hold more plunder and then usually sell it off after a while, but never for a flagship. They are too slow in battle or sailing. I will usually use a smaller ship for sailing and a frigate for battle. _________________ Hey Dude!! Your gas cap is open!!!

I don't know whether you may know about this, but there is a new, strange group of pirates in the Caribbean. Men of all nationalities are in this group. They usually govern big, heavy ships and they like selling off cargo to allied ports. For some reason, this cargo seems to be legitimate 99% of the case. They call themselves "merchants", and they're a pretty strange bunch of whackos indeed! _________________ Every time you capture a SoL a kitten dies. So please sink the SoLs |

I started my new game as the English Capt. Galleonator in 1660, and captured a Treasure Galleon fairly quickly. I proceeded to upgrade it fully and tried her out. Man, are they fricking SLOW! I'm like two years into the game and I've only made it as far west as Puerto Bello (Started in St. Kitts, sailing a clockwise circuit). I even chose the Navigation skill. The only thing they do slower than sail is turn. Even with copper plating, they can't turn for Sh!t On the plus side, they have great firepower, cargo capacity, and crew capacity. My galleon has performed well in combat and has never recieved serious damage. It's just a big, fat, slow tank of a vessel. I've found it hard to hit small escort vessels accurately since I can't turn fast enough to get into proper firing position. If I don't have the weather gage, forget it. Combat takes about ten minutes if my galleon is downwind of the target.
Overall, it's not a bad ship. It just takes to long to do anything. When sailing a Treasure Galleon the pace of the game slows down to the point where it's boring. My backup is Henry Morgans large frigate. I could attack and take four ships with the frigate in the same amount of time it takes the galleon to capture one ship. |

...thus neatly summing up why a frigate-class ship is better than any galleon-class ship.
Frigates are better than Galleons in every way except for cargo capacity. However, what's the use of having more space if you can't catch as much to fill it up, mateys? Am I right? Aye? Aye? _________________ Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves;
