See if your local library has these titles...
I've heard this one is really good, but haven't seen it...
The Black Swan (1942)
I'm watching this one now, its surprisingly much like the game, complete with Pirates, plunder, privateers, evil Spanish and a sexy governor's daughter all very enjoyable...
The Sea Hawk (1940)
and this one's not bad...
Captain Blood (1935)

Geez, you're going back a fair way with those titles, Jaguart. Any further back and you'd have to read what the actors are saying.
just kidding, I've actually watched Captain Blood and enjoyed it. _________________ Shiver me timbers!!!

Try Roman Polanski's Pirates, if you can find the 124 min version somewhere. (If you happen to find it in Canada, please tell me where...) |

Yep... 1983. Found a link.
All I can remember is the song....
I am the very model of a modern Major-General
I know our mythic history, King Arthur's and Sir Caradoc's;
I answer hard acrostics, I've a pretty taste for paradox,
I quote in elegiacs all the crimes of Heliogabalus,
In conics I can floor peculiarities parabolous;
--
I can tell undoubted Raphaels from Gerard Dows and Zoffanies,
I know the croaking chorus from the Frogs of Aristophanes!
Then I can hum a fugue of which I've heard the music's din afore,
And whistle all the airs from that infernal nonsense Pinafore.
...
For my military knowledge, though I'm plucky and adventury,
Has only been brought down to the beginning of the century;
But still, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I am the very model of a modern Major-General. _________________ The Spirit of the Cav is reason enough to fight! |

Wasn't that called "the Pirate Movie"?
That movie wasn't that bad. If digital cable REALLY offered movies on demand, I'd watch it right now. _________________ Sackin' Panama since 1987. |

Not sure, but it could have been at one time. You can find it under Pirates of Pinzance, in Amazon.com. It was a comedy (yeh sure) remake of a play/musical by the same name. While I found it listed as the Pirates of Pinzance Your post kind of makes me remember it on Showtime (long time ago) as the Pirate movie. _________________ The Spirit of the Cav is reason enough to fight! |

So NOBODY has posted the most recent ones?
*Pirates of the Carribean* (2003) with a marvellous Johnny Depp (though normally I do not like hin at all). Laughed myself almost sh*tless, in addition there is also a beautiful governor's daughter (Keira Knightley) and an annoying Orlando Bloom, but even he isn't able to spoil it.
*Cutthroat Island* (1995) starring Geena Davis. Haven't seen it yet.

I think they were not mentioned becuase the post was for GOOD pirate movies. (Just kidding).
I actually liked Pirates of the Carribean, despite the fact that last december My wife and I went to visit her family in Florida and decided to hit Disney. On the Pirates ride there were so many mechanical difficulties that it ended up breaking down 4 times. Each break down was about 10-20 minutes in lenght. While it was nice to have the time to spend with my wife, having recently returned from Iraq, sitting next to the jail cell listeing to the 3 pirates whistle for the dog and the jail keys for that period fof tiome was pushing me to my patience limit. But went out and bought the movie anyway and am actually looking forward to part two.
Cut Throat Island, on the other hand was not very enjoyable. I just didnt like anything about it. _________________ The Spirit of the Cav is reason enough to fight! |

The Renny Harlin's movie "Cutthroat Island" was absolutely awful. There's nothing more to be said about it... |

It had its moments. Oh wait! I think I blinked! I had such high hopes for that movie, just to have them dashed to pieces. |

I'm calling my library now to get a copy of The Black Swan. It's pretty rare.
These old movies have the same feel as the Pirates! game, that's why I thought there might be interest.
One of my favorites is Treasure Island (1950). The Disney version. Its quite good.
I just got Billy Budd (1962) http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0055796/maindetails
But haven't watched it yet. Seems that in the 30's & 40's Pirate movies were like what comic book movies are today.

I can't believe that you forgot two excellent movies:
Peter Pan (with the arch-villain Capt. Hook)
and... Popeye! (Well, he's a sailor man... so he's sorta like a pirate, kinda.)
Both are very scary movies. Watch only with the lights on, and holding your sweethearts hand makes it easier not to scream. _________________ "I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,

Swashbuckler (1976)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075294/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnxzZz0xfHR0PW9ufHBuPTB8cT1zd2FzaGJ1Y2tsZXJzfG14PTIwfGxtPTIwMHxodG1sPTF8bm09b24_;fc=3;ft=4
I saw it when it first came out when I was 7.
In my opinion there wasn't a decent pirate movie until "Pirates of the Carribean" unless you count "The Princess Bride" but that wasn't about pirates just had a lead character that was a pirate.
Of course "Master and Commander" was great and it involved privateers, not technically a pirate movie, but great movie about the waning days of the Wooden ship/Iron men navy.
I don't know why it was so difficult for hollywood to produce a decent pirate movie in the meantime. "Pirates" and "Cuthroat Island" both got really bad reviews and did bad at the box office. "Pirates of Pinzance" is a light hearted musical so I don't think that really counts. _________________ "Me? I'm dishonest, and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly.
