I use the rapier because:
1. Thrusts are faster
2. I don't have to use the other ones, and thrusts block other thrusts
3. I can get in more hits
4. I can hit the guy more easily when he's doing an upslash/downslash _________________ "A short life and a merry one, that's my motto!" "Black Bart" Roberts |

Cutlass is my sword of choice. I almost always go for my cutlass when I board an enemy vessel. I will (rarely) use a longsword just to "mix it up" but mainly it's my cutlass.
I will use the rapier for the suitor or the criminal but that's all. Rapier is more like a 3 Musketeers sword than a pirate's sword, but that's just my opinion... _________________ "Families are like fudge...Mostly sweet with a few nuts." |

I prefer the longsword myself.
Historically, the rapier was favoured by the Spanish and French and the English were more likely to use the basket-hilted broadsword (very similar to the longsword in the game). England always trying to keep up with continental fashions, the rapier was introduced some time in about the sixteenth/seventeenth century. It was used by both sides at the start of the English civil war, and then discarded by both as being next to useless.
There is a story of a rapier master coming to England to teach members of the aristocracy and getting in a dispute with a farmer in an inn; the farmer challenged him to a swordfight, and the rapier master refused saying it would be suicide for the farmer. Riding home in his carriage, the rapier master was surprised to hear fast hoofbeats in pursuit and saw the farmer on his old nag with his basket-hilted broadsword in his belt. He stopped his carriage and finally agreed to fight the farmer after the farmer called him a coward; within a few seconds of the fight starting the rapier master was dead. |

In ordinary fights at sea I use the longsword. In the toughest fights - Montalban, jealous fiance, captain of the guard - I use the cutlass. (They can't beat me if they can't hit me!) And against criminals in the tavern I use the rapier. |

On Swashbuckler level, there are some opponents that have such a comparative speed advantage that that doesn't work. You have to defend against them some to slow them down.
I prefer the cutlass. My style is defend (sometimes multiple times) and counterattack (most often a thrust), and the cutlass is perfect for that. It works at all ages, against almost all opponents. Sometimes against Montalban, though, I will switch to longsword, because otherwise he's impossible to hit. The game makes him artificially fast. |

In my experience, Montalban is only super-fast when using his special attack. He's pretty slow when it comes to parrying my counter-thrusts. |

I always use the rapier; for as long as I've been playing the Pirates! games, I've preferred the rapier's speed over the longsword's even balance and the cutlass's power |
