Last night in a battle with a War Galleon, the Galleon fired off a salvo that was a mix of chain and ball shot. Did not think this was possible! Has anyone else seen this? Or better yet...been able to do this!?

As you progress in levels, you are able to change your shot type while you are firing. It does not show this unless your graphics options are set correctly. I have fired all three shot types in one salvo.

Yes and Yes.

Lets say you have your grape shot ready to go.

Press 5 (or space) to fire.

Then right after that, while the volley is still firing, press 2 (for chain shot) and you'll see it change.

The game correctly treats the damamge done to people and sails as you would expect.

Have not seen an enemy vessel do this in any battle yet.
But I do know how to accomplish this yourself...pretty easy too!

When you have a large number of cannons on board, you wait until they are all loaded.
For example, we will fire round shot and grape shot all at once.
When you press Space or Num5, you wait until you fired half of your salvo of round shot.
Now when you have at least half a salvo left (just guessing and playing around) you quickly press Num1. Now you will see both round shot AND grape shot flying over to the enemy vessel...

That will teach him to engage in combat with you.
I used round shot and grape shot in this example, but you can try this out with chain shot as well...just try around, you might find it usefull...

I tried doing that a few times and it really seemed to be pretty ineffective. By the time the different shots came the other ship had moved or they came out too slow and just missed.....

The only time it was effective for me was when I slugging it out with another ship (normally in a SotL or Large Frigate). It's pretty useless otherwise.

I know. I was just beeing a smart-ass. Wink

That's the funny thing about easy questions that come up during the day (when people are at work, not playing the game) everyone tries to answer at once.

I've had opponents mix round and chain shot in the same volley... at Journeyman level, no less.

The only time I find it useful, is when I'm sailing a L.Frigate or SotL and I don't want to sink a smaller ship.

A direct hit of 48 cannons will put down a barque or smaller (especially unfortified ones). Changing the type of cannon fire roughly halfway through lessens the chances of this.

On Journeyman, Medoza, Raymondo, and Montlabon always do this to me when I'm getting close to them in a sloop. It gets annoying if your ships sails are already going down the crapper at the time when round shot rips through the deck and chain shot tears your sails to ribbons.

One mayor tip here:

Always make sure you sail with the wind in your back when you attack.
This way you have more speed for dodging their attacks.
Also a great advice I learned wandering this great forum ( I don't know excactly who gave the advice though), when you have enough crew to do a lowered sail tactic before you make a turn to dodge the attack.

How you can manage this is simple actually, but you have to practice this though.
Right before you make a turn, lower your sails. Right after you come out of the turn, raise your sails again.
This way you are way faster on the turning feature, thus dodging all the load the enemy vessel fired at you.

Hope you find this usefull!

This obviously depends upon your shoice of flagship.

Pinnace class ships sail better across the wind than they do with the wind at their backs.

hmm, did not know that, since I usually sail a Frigate.
Thanx for the tip there Rupert!

Does this also count for the Sloop of War?
I intend to use this type of ship the next game I start.
