OK,

So I'm trying to make a sail for the cross of St. Andrew (national symbol of Scotland)

So here is my .bmp I used the directions from Wolfwood's tutorial..

http://thecorleonefamily.com/pirates/Image1.bmp

But it ends up looking like this... (note the corners)

http://thecorleonefamily.com/pirates/Sail1.jpg

any thoughts?

Not having ever done a sail/banner mod the only thing I can come up with is: Are your dimensions right for the sail. It looks as though the game is stretching your picture Left-right.

Is your image wide enough?

One thing that the tutorial is still missing is the fact that the game engine "stretches" the edge pixels of the sail image in order to have it cover the whole sail area. That's what causes the distortion in your image.

It would be safer if you leave about 5 pixels of empty space around your image (in which case you'd not have it cover the whole sail) or you'd have to account for the stretching by narrowing down the ends of those cross bars, perhaps to make them sharp like spear heads (or whatever they are called). This latter option would require a lot of testing to see how much you'd have to narrow them, though...

512x512 for sails, 256x256 for flags and 256x512 for the second/small sail (poorly implemented graphics option)

Have found that you need to shrink by about 10-15% to allow for background bleed. You need an empty border around your design, then you probably want an Alpha mask for this border so the sail has the standard cloth look, otherwise you will prob end up with a solid white background.

The proof of this is the solid blue edges of your current sail. (and the white corners)

Of course, given your current graphic, you can get it working immediately by adding the Alpha on top of it.

BTW that sail is already in current distribution.

Only if you put one there.
Re-read the sticky on making sails.

Then you know what an Alpha is and what it does.

So I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong. I'm still getting the stretched corners thing.

Start with "What is Alpha?"

Alpha is an overlay graphic telling where you want the primary graphic to be transparant.

"Where do you put Alpha?"

You put alpha where you want the graphic underneath yours to show through.

"What does your current Alpha do?"

Puts a transparent X through my basic Blue/white BMP.

"Is that what you are after?"

I want the blue and white flag on my sail.

Your alpha is not doing what you are seeking.

Try a black edge about 50 pixels wide on all sides with a white center for an experimental alpha (8 bit grey only) on top of your blue/white sail BMP.

I looked at the properties of your flag (256 x 256) and your alpha (310 x 310). Is that an issue?

OK, I'll try that.

ruff, the 310x310 is due to Internet Explorer resizing the image for your monitor.

The 256x256 is because for somedamned reason, the picture did not refresh on my server, but it is 512x512 in the version I'm using.
