Been around the forums for a while now

Though I would finally post an Intro of sorts here
since I have been posting a few 20 cents worth in a few tech threads.

anyway here goes and drivel mode on!

Firstly Fleetp probably knew me as Afterdimness from the GVZ days.
(darkness into light mangled by an email server - you cant use this account name result, try something different) around 2006-8 maybe.

My one time at assistant forum moderating.
Eventually sort of Ran out of time to do it and gaming took a back seat for quite a while after then..


Interests are Playing SM pirates, Arrrgh!

Current Games on PC system are
Pirates!, Return to Castle wolfenstein (somehow never seems to disappear), and Gabriel Knight 1 Sins of the Fathers CD running in Dosbox
which has a brillant soundtrack.
Everything else as and when or as diskspace permits.

Can't say RPG games are a great interest more due to
not wanting to devote the required time to it
and not wanting to fall into to the trap of this game will not beat me!


Trying to avoid computer OS & Hardware issues
without a great deal of success.

Have relatives who expect a non-expiring free life time support
means don't succeed much in computer avoidance.
They tend to regard me as not having the first idea of what to do with a computer with the case on! It is explained below.

Having done Tech Support back in the day for
corporates, Distributors, OEMs, Networks and servers, Routers and comms links on various OS and even dabbled with Macs now and then
which for PC Support guys is akin to leoprosy!

PC Guys do PCs and Mac Guys are perverts is the sort of PC attitude.
While Mac guys probably think of the PC brethern as sadly maladjusted
individuals neeeding copious therapy and medication.
I take the 5th on whether that is true or not!
But hardware and OS rage does exist and every side has it partisans.

Never was enough time to get into software other than OS
as much as I would have liked or admit too.

Can find my way around most things but problem is getting
the motivation or patience for it in the first place.

Famous last words are this is written by a programmer how hard can it be!
very hard if you don't figure out what recreational drugs they
were on when they wrote it.


Enforced life style changes, so I don't do all that anymore
and don't really miss it all that much either.
you miss the good people more than anything else.

A few Thermonuclear level exhaustion stress Burnouts
can give a most things underwhelm you attitude!
Haven't just burned the T-Shirt but rocket booster incinerated it!
not cynical just a realisitic jaded inidividual

Anyway, Really enjoy some of Pirate's phrasing in some of the posts here.

Alcohol while not much use when dabbling with high voltages,
does give you an excuse to drink more of it to recover from the last batch.


My opinon of programmers (another extremely partisan area)
is anything more than a cut & paste from previous work involves
usually copious whining. Their opinon is probably unprintable.



Some Crazy Tech support events

Everyone probably knows about the Coffee cup CD holder urban myth,
well its actually true, it has been done and broken CD drive to prove it.
Names withheld to protect the not so innocent and very sheepish.


Yes the blood around the broken photocopier glass
was somebody photocopying their ass
and nowhere near as lightweight as they would imagine.
They got toner where toner is not mean to be.
A suspiously large amount in the shredder bin
suggests where all the copies went.
Amazing what a thermal crack can do to a glass screen.


Yes you do have to press that big power button on
and Its supposed to make that spinning fan sound
and no is not a foot rest
Calls like that do actually happen.



User back in the floppy days stick a floppy with a CV file
in the drive and triggers a virus alert with the filename.
One of the really simple trival ones easy to clean.
In the process of fixing it.
All the other support guys who personally known this genius,
make a point of ringing the support phone number and howling with laughter.
Absolutely bombarded with calls for about 10 minutes
and have the phone about 2 feet from my ear,
with racious laughter coming from the phone
clearly audible to anyone near by.

Genius is getting redder in the face by the moment
wanting to disppear down the nearest floor crack,
and moves away.
Eveyone then absolute loses it!
Cloesest I ever saw to ROTFL (Rolls on the floor laughing).



Back in the day of the 5.25 Floppies which you mailed in do not bend
envelopes, someone didn' t actually bended it but put a staple right thorugh it with a return address slip.
you just simply had to Laugh, It was the thought that counted!
Dug up another floopy to send off what ever was required.


Oh The Routers not working as we have no power.
The router in the basement and the powers off as its flooding!
and the waters so high!
Get the hell out of there!!!!, who cares if the router goes swimming
compared to you, you have a support contract, will send you another one.
Leave now!!!!


Can't Print.
Printers are arriving Tuesday week but still can't print now!!
Okay will set up your server print Queues if you know what
Printer models are on order, manage to dig out a purchase order listing some models. Make it clear still wont be able to print until the IT guy deliver and wire up the printers and no you will not be printing today!!

A Highway construction crew have just put a jack hammer through the backbone cable which runs alongside the Highway. oops!
No both cables are down (why take out one when you can take out 2)

No the Cable repair guys won't be getting there anytime soon (as
currently melting in the truck (hottest day of the year and may not have any air con)) stuck in the traffic jam cause by the road construction crew.

Try The police to get the cable guys an escort, They can't get there either
Cruiser blocked in traffic
flashing light and siren isn't going to get then a millimetre closer
and some Politican is using the Helo - Golf or some such lunacy!

If this was a hurricane - Aboslutely and utterly Fraqqed
but at least it would knock down the damn helo
which would be something

Where's that freebie one of those gaming companies gave out.
Sling it in the mail addressed to the cable guys as a very big thank you.
Bartering is alive and well in PC ville.

When the Cable guy get there, they have to find it and they have to fix it.
Road construction crew if they get bored could have another whack at the cables.
(When a complete backbone goes down disaster recovery is a fantasy)



Windows 98 or was it ME, it was ME
(ME was an utterly craptasic OS - essentially 98 with NT style drivers
completely different to actual NT drivers so nobody bothered with it,
Microsoft's contribution to Y2K)
with a Microsoft natural keyboard with a sleep button, known to the PC support guys as the Suicide switch.
A OS suspend to disk feature which was extremely flakey due to the OS.
It only really worked properly beginning with 2000 or XP with a proper suspend swap file.
Funnny enough a lot of PC guys are still reluctant to use it on general principles, bad mojo.

Guy rings in and says pressed the sleep button and it worked.
Everbody in the support line room is clustered around the phone in
stunned diselief by this stage - it actually works!

but hang on a moment why is the guy ringing in!!

Guy explains further pressed it again and it still worked

More stunned disbelief - Not natual Microsoft stuff just don't start to work

Guy explains even further - pressed the Sleep button again
and this time it didn't work and OS Crashed and went kaput -
corrupted beyond salvage

Cue Support guys going Yeah - all's right with the world
Mirosoft lowers expectations yet again!
proceed to give the guy the bad news OS is completely shot
and can talk him through a complete wipe & reinstall or take System back and get Hard Drive remastered, his choice.

Can we get marketting to put say a Nuclear hazardous material warning sticker on the damn sleep button - No, Microsoft OS agreement says we can't.
Wince when next hear OS suspend features next being extolled,
and warn everybody else who personally know me keep fingers off the button.

As Sid meier pirate! game would say - Live the Life!


I'll end this here as want to say I have a general vague idea about
Computer stuff even though not sure what!
and does not include everything with a power cable.

Remember a butterfly wing flapping in china can cause a tornado in kansas, better known as the law of unintended consequences
which sort of sums up the Windows 10 ongoing disaster perfectly.

Some bad internal Microsoft decision making, it going to come back and bite them if there is any karma in the world.

Saw simplesim hosting some stuff via facebook
(I haven't used the gmail address in a while, have to figure out the password as Microsoft manage to terminate my password file
with extreme predjuice)

That's quite the introduction @corsair91 !! I wish I had the time to delight you guys with my lunacy but this account I just made hastily because I realized I might forget with my attention span of a fly. Supaaa Fly! I also blame the insanely high amount of distractions around lately.

Joined, because I love pirates from the games to the mental. I think Sid Meier's Pirates, 2004 the one I was around to play, does great justice to the feel of "pirates". And as such, I've designated this forum as the low key industry leading, pirate spirit home.

The other game that sits closely and I in fact regard as the greatest is Black Flag.

My goal in life is to bring about the Pirate Space Age!!
