I never seem to get much gold from an escort so now I'll just blow them out of the water and be done with them. They can be a pain in the keyster otherwise and at any rate its fun to blow 'em up.

They do, indeed. Sometimes, the escort had the spices and luxuries, while the escorted ship only had goods or sugar.

However, watching a Fast Galleon blow up is an impressive sight, especially at night and on close distance.
