Sometimes you are asked to transport Immigrants from a mission to a port. What effect does doing this have ????? |

This increases the population of the destination port, if the ship arrives safely. Among others it increases the purchase capacity of the city, as well as reduces its economic level (too many people for the old economic status, heh heh). It also makes the destination city's Nation a bit happy. _________________ Blondebeard: "Madre de Dios! Es el Pollo Diablo!!"

Thanks headrock
I wasn't able to detect any effect, seems like it's the changes are a little more long term and subtle then what I was looking for...

No, not really. The change is immediate, but some of its effects need other events to occur - the most obvious and of course the most important factor is the change in trade values for that city. I think there's also an effect on local garrison size, although I've never checked this thoroughly. Y'know what? I'll go do some testing right now. I'll be back with results soon. _________________ Blondebeard: "Madre de Dios! Es el Pollo Diablo!!"

On the PC, the change shows up instantly as a quality improvement in the Flag over the city. |

If you watch carefully, you can see the city get bigger on the map when the immigrants dock.
I have not, however, seen immigrants have an effect on garrison size, which leads to the question: What does? Military payrolls? Or does the garrison regenerate over time as the economy improves.
After you take a town, it's damn difficult to keep it because there's no garrison left. And even after a couple of boatloads of immigrants, the garrison alternates between 0 and 20. I've even parked out front to intercept pirates and Indians and invasion fleets, hoping the garrison would get bigger, but if it is regenerating, it's regenerating pretty damn slowly. |

When you increase the economy and population of certain towns, the other towns belonging to the same nation will send troop ships to that town to increase the garrison size. Basically, you have to nurture a town for quite a long time and try to make sure that the troop carriers arrive there safely. _________________ It is much better to be armed with a sword that has two edges than with an estoc [...], which is nothing more than a stick with a point. I believe that troop transports and military payrolls are the direct way to increase a city's garrison, and you don't have the ability to spawn those ships.
However, and this is only a guess, I think that boosting a town's economy will eventually be reflected in a stronger garrison. Escorting a new governor is the primary way to improve the economy. Immigrants add to the population of a town, which will frequently cause a short-term economic loss (same amount of money divided among more people), but should also cause a long-term gain.

Tell me about it! There's nothing more annoying than watching the Spanish reclaim a town that you had just taken from them. Especially with the v1.01 patch "feature" that prevents you from capturing any town more than once.... _________________ Steal the crew, set fire to the gold, and make the ships walk the plank!

Definitely... you can not control the military built up... it acts on its own. Also, you can only transport the immigrants from the same settlement after so many turns. You pretty much have to guard those immigrants from the various settlement in the area.
In my current game... I am really focus on building up port which I sacked. So, it does takes a while... and each time a new governor arrive... it will spurs the economy.
btw: I generally plunder a town that has a new governor due to arrive... that would give an immediate boost to economy.
The whole point of me rebuilding the port is so... I can come back and plunder the "wealthy capital" under a different flag later (True pirate ethic!!! Plunder Plunder Plunder) |

Another reason to build up a port is to be able to keep seeing your wife. For crying out loud nothing sucks worst on patch 1.01 when you sack the town change it marry the girl there and then it gets changed to the opposing nation and you can no longer make the visit to your wife. So building the town up before you leave is a very wise move.. Although a waste of time as in getting everything else accoimplished that you may have as personaly goals .. I will have to say that building the econmy and the settlers is a good thing to do to oppose any attacks on your wonderful town. What happen to my old option in the origianl Pirates! to divide my fleet to sit back and attack and then rejoin them later after they well guarded my town I wanted to keep.
Oh well ... enjoy what you get ... and have fun .. though it pisses me off when I help an opposing goverment town without realizing it just cause i was in the area. |

Good point... on that note... I notice... if my home town has more than 220 soliders... it seems to withstand and fend off any attack through out the duration of the round... (independent of the difficulty level)...
Is that what you experiece as well? |

I always build it so it stays wealthy and attack any ship near to ensure crew stays somewhat happy. The exact men count I don't know.. but I do stay there for awhile. I think 200+ is a safe number if it isn't to close to a large opposing town. If it is .. I would try to increase the amount. |

Another thing...
I generally pick a port with the same nationality near by... and a monastery as well.
For example: my Spanish favorite has been Maracaibo... (not to mention easy to get to just about anywhere)...
Unfortunately... a pirate cove is also near by.
Another option is just to pick a location where you have near by ports converted... Like Nevis (my British Favor), St. Martin, St. Kitts. |

Here are the effects I've seen:
Pirate raiders - town wealth destroyed (garrison, also?)
Indian raiders - population destroyed (garrison, also)
Military payroll - garrison increased
Invasion force - town changes hands
Immigrants - population increase
Grain transport - ??
New governer - I don't think XBox gets these, does it? I haven't seen it
Did I leave any out? |
