Could you please be more specific? Will the original version which comes on the Limited Edition work on an XP or other new machines?

Or, are you just saying the old version will work on the old machine (Tandy 1000hx)?

It would be great to know if the original version has been part of the beta-test - even just to test compatibility issues.

I would imagine that they would make the original version XP-ready - XP is in use everywhere now.

My home pc runs XP, so I am being very hopeful on this...

For those of you, like me, that can't play the old Pirates! game on modern PCs, I have a way to get it running. If you send an email to *beep* or an AIM instant message to It Is Me Jacob, I can send you a Sega Genesis Emulator and Pirates Gold rom to go with it. As long as you actually have Pirates! or Pirates Gold, it's prefectly legal. Wink

*edited - I'm not sure it is. If you own the Genesis version, it may be, but I think it's only legal if you make the rom yourself.

I have two suggestions on how to do this on my website:
http://www.geocities.com/piratesgold1987/xp.html

The problem is that XP does not do DOS well, and Pirates! Gold for Windows was designed for Windows 3.x which runs ontop of DOS. I think it has something to do with processor speed multiplication.
Alternative solutions:
As previously suggested, get the Genisis Rom and emulator
or
Create a DOS partition or DOS drive and boot from that partition or drive and Pirates! Gold will run smooth.

I have a 300 Mhz box with Windows 98, I just boot into safe mode command prompt only, load my mouse driver and play the DOS version.

Wow, I didn't realize there were so many problems with Pirates Gold! and Windows XP. I have Pirates Gold for Windows and it runs on mine just fine. WinXP 1.8P4. Only problem I have is with stearing the ship..... very unresponsive..... not good when travelling close to shoals!

Just finished a career on Adventurer, 1640s, English, and finally did pretty well. Retired as a General in St. Kitts.... There was plenty of Galleons floating around all over the place. I stayed with the Frigate the whole time.

Hope those issues get resolved for y'all. I wonder what is different with mine?

A little Thread necromancy

As Pirates Gold Plus is now sold by GOG and Steam,
the games may not be as easy available on abandonware sites anymore.

Description

Arrr matey! It’s a pirate’s life for me!

Grab your parrot, your eye patch, and sail the Caribbean in search of adventure, treasure, beautiful maidens, or all of the above in Pirates! Gold Plus. With a letter of marque in your hand, you can fly the flag of France, the Dutch Republic, England, or Spain. Change your loyalties as you see fit, all in the name of fame and profit. You won’t be sailing alone--your rough and ready crew comes along with you. Don’t forget to split the spoils with them or you may find that you're the one who's walking the plank.

You begin with a letter of marque, a humble ship, and a bit of gold. As a privateer for either the Dutch Republic, France, England, or Spain you’ll hire your crew and set sail for treasure and adventure. Discover lost cities as you put together treasure maps acquired from seedy pubs or rescue your long-lost family members.

Bombarding enemy ships with hull-crushing cannonballs. Crossing swords with scurvy rogues. It's the life of high-seas adventure when you journey through the swashbuckling world of Pirates! Gold Plus.

Includes the 1987 original Sid Meier's Pirates! and 1993's Pirates! Gold.
You'll criss-cross your way along the 17th century Spanish Main in search of thrilling adventures.
Assault towns and forts, battle with garrison commanders, fire your cannons broadside at an armada of foes, including Spanish War Galleons, Dutch Frigates, French Merchantmen, and even English Sloops!
Search for lost cities and treasure or take it by force from the other pirates!

This maybe of interest

The original Pirates! PC game version only has 4 Color CGA graphics.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sid_Meier%27s_Pirates!

GOG and Steam apparently sell only the PC Pirates games bundled with Dosbox emulator in Pirates! Gold Plus.
(1987 original Sid Meier's Pirates! and 1993's Pirates! Gold)

A much better Sound and Graphics Original Pirates! Game version
apparently was the Amiga version.

Some people suggest that the Commodore 64 (C64) Pirates! game
has even better gameplay than the Amiga game, but inferior Graphics.

https://www.mobygames.com/game/amiga/sid-meiers-pirates

Amiga Screenshots

The Amiga Pirates! game should be on the various
Amiga Abandonware sites, google for it if interested.

There shoud hopefully be Amiga game version bundled
with an Amiga PC emulator, all ready to run.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amiga_emulation

Some PC Amiga Emulators
(one of these should be already integrated in the Amiga Pirates! download
if you grab the right file)

Is this game, Sid Meier's Pirates! Gold Plus (Classic), worth playing in 2020 since there is a 2004 version of Pirates!?
