My trick is to follow all of Headrock's guide except the following.

I don't take over cities, it makes them poor and isn't necessary for a quick SOTL grab.

I emphasize staying out to sea. In fact I don't return to port without a SOTL in tow.
-If you need food steal it from other ships.
-If you need crew steal them from other ships
-If your ship gets damaged steal a fresh one and abandon your crapper.

Dead men tell no tales, and Land Lubbers don't sail SOTL. Sailor

yeah I've played like that still haven't seen any SOTL...
anyway, I prefer a Sloop or a Pinnace. less cannons but much more fun to play Smile

Using Headrock's guide in a 1660 scenario I was able to obtain a SOTL by March 21 1660, and it came with a gunner. I play on XBOX so I just kept that save as my new starting point. I really didn't even have to harrass a terrible number of merchants either. Mostly smugglers, escorts, etc.

I think it's fairly well-documented, the console versions of Pirates spawn SotL a LOT faster then the PC version does, so it's hard to compare a console result vs a PC result... I also would bet my parrot that the initial poster who got a SotL in 5-minutes was playing a console version, not the PC version.

If that is the case, matey, then capturing a Ship of the Line on the PC is a tougher challenge, and therefore a sweeter victory...

In my humble opinion (since I'm a privateer speaking of purely pirate matters), I think that capturing an SotL on the PC is possible in the first five minutes...a great deal of luck is involved, but I believe it could happen!

Whenever I read the acronym for Ship of the Line (SOL) I pretend it stands for Shit Out of Luck because that's what you are if you're facing all 48 loaded guns of one!

i was playing my PsP pirates the other day
after taking out 5 merchentmen, and 2 pirate hunters, in a short amount of time
a SOTL came to get me, and after 2 pirate hunters i was worn out so i docked at an english port, replenished myself, and got outta there fast

Yea, I didn't even take out more than two merchants. Just a handful of smugglers and raiders.

You took out seven ships and they sent out the super heavyweight to deal with you? Wow...

Amazing! I usually have to face sloop-class ships...although, my main target is usually the deep-pocketed Spanish, and they spawn not a single frigate-class type of ship...

Once a pinnace dared to act as a pirate hunter against my Large Frigate. I was insulted, believe ye me.

That's always good for a laugh. Here I am, sailin' around in my newly-captured Ship O' The Line (you can hardly see the bloodstains!), and some punk in a toy boat decides to challenge me.

Him: "Stand and fight, you coward!"
Me: "What? Who said that?"
Him: "ME! Face your doom, scurvy pirate!"
Me: "No, really! Who are you? Are the voices in me head actin' up again?"
Him: "Down here! I am Julio Martinez Vargas de la Chinchilla, feared pirate hunter!"
Me: "Never heard of you. Helmsman, steer a point or two toward starboard, if you please...."

*CRUNCH*

Him: "Argh! Blub blub blub blub...."
Me: "Did we just hit something? Ah, never mind. Set course for Port Royale!"

Seriously, though ... I usually just sink the toy boats with a few good broadsides unless I'm really desperate for gold. Let 'em try to arrest the bloody sharks....

SJ,
I've often wished that the game would allow me to go ship to ship. And I mean REALLY ship to ship.
I would like, just once, to hear that lovely grating sound as a sloop or pinnace class ship gets ground beneath my stately bohemoth...
But maybe that's just me. Lost

I had this happen in the "It could be worse challenge" just yesterday. I had Morgans Large Frigate that I recently acquired in my attempts to gather a sizable crew to confront the Marquis de Montalban in his fortress. In my zeal to garner gold stars with the other Nations, I attacked an Indian war canoe that was perilously close to the shallows. Rather than wasting good powder I elected to just board the silly buggers, but upon my coming up alongside of the this Canoe she suddenly blew up up in me face, leaving me with a few paltry, sputtering souls. swimmin in me wake, to claim part of my booty.

Aye, it's a tossup on whether it's insulting or laughable when when one of these (obviously) amateur Pirate Hunters offers a "challenge."

I consider it an affront that any ship should be so insane or foolish to even tangle with my frigate-class ships.

If any lesser ship happens to even slightly graze my Ship of the Line with a cannon ball, I often raise my red flag of no quarter, and shout, "That's not a broadside...here's a real broadside!" And I duly take my turn at bat.

"Look out!" shouts the enemy crew. It's raining cannonballs!"

There is one circumstance in Pirates! where you can do this. If you engage a War Canoe and a second War Canoe acts as an escort, when you ram the escort you will demolish it rather than capture it.

It's not just you. I'd love to be able to crush a pinnace into matchsticks with the reinforced keel of a Ship O' The Line or Flag Galleon. Twisted Evil
