The manual says that a sloop of war's maximum guns are 16. However from time to time I've noticed them with 18-20 guns especially on pirate hunter sloops. I didn't think much of this but then suddenly I defeat this sloop of war and when it's stats screen came up it said 32 guns . This is twice what it says in the manual is max. Is this a glitch in my game or something? _________________ "Give a man a mask and he will tell you the truth" - Oscar Wilde |

I would say that when you find a Sloop with 18-20 Cannons, it is most likely a Royal Sloop.
As for the 32 upon defeat, I've seen something like that a couple of times, but only on an "Escort", that for some reason, comes up with the same amount of everything «Food, Luxuries, Goods, Spice, Sugar and Cannons» that the ship it was escorting had. That doesn't happen very often, but I've seen it once or twice.

I've got the PSP version if that makes any difference, however if it is a bug I have to wonder what other bugs I may have . I really don't want to have to invest in another copy . The sloops were definately labled as 'sloops of war' and they were pirate hunters, even the 32 gun one. _________________ "Give a man a mask and he will tell you the truth" - Oscar Wilde |

This happens to me quite often. Always with escort vessels. It's some kind of glitch in the game, since a sloop can't carry 75 tons of goods and spice.
One of my standard tactics when attacking an escoted merchantman is to blast the crap out of the escort with chainshot so he can't counter any of my manuevers, then take the merchant vessel. Then, when the main sailing screen returns, I attack the escort which almost always has a white flag up. It's nice when you take a galleon loaded to the gills with spice and the glitch causes the escort to give up another 60 tons of spice. Ka-Ching! |

I've never seen an over abundance of guns on a sloop like that, but I have seen a lot of other weird things go on with escort sloops in the game.
For one, I can often times pound them into splinters, board them and when the time comes to determine if I'm going to keep the ship I will find it has zero damage to sails or hull.
For another, I'll board and find that the escort ship has a lot of gold and trade goods loaded on it. Sometimes much more than could ever fit onto a sloop.
Just last night I had a Spanish sloop escorting a fast galleon. I boarded the escort ship after pounding it with grape and watching the sails shred to insignificance, to find zero damage to her sails and over 115 tons of goods stuffed into her holds.
Sloops are only 40 ton ships....
The fast galleon, on the other hand, had almost no trade goods stored on her.
Have you tried to use one of these 32 guns sloops in battle? If you can get a sloop that carries the gun weight in metal of a frigate...
What an advantage that would be!
I'd keep that ship for the rest of the game!!
I used to be a mail runner enthusiast, but now I've discovered how much faster and more agile a War Canoe is...
I've been using a War Canoe to haul my fleet around the map ever since. _________________ 'Vast heaving! Belay there, I say! |

Imagine a War Canoe with 32 guns...that would be like a Formula 1 car somehow carrying the A-10 Warthog's 30mm cannon...with depleted uranium shells as ammo. _________________ Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves;

Dave,
Now you've got me wanting to mount a 30mm cannon in my War Canoe!
My only worry would be whether her scantlings could take the punishment. _________________ 'Vast heaving! Belay there, I say! |

No problem. Just get the more mutinous crew members to brace the cannon when ye open fire. There's a handy solution!

Yup, the PSP version is a bit different in this regard. I think it was noticed when it first came out that the cannons weren't added to the ships the same way as they are on the PC version. _________________ It is much better to be armed with a sword that has two edges than with an estoc [...], which is nothing more than a stick with a point. Avast there, Swordeater, what mean ye by wanting to sink both Ships of the Line and War Canoes?
If ye don't want 'em, I'll take 'em! My fleet isn't complete without at least one of each of 'em!

I like my eggs edible. I suspect that thousands of degrees of heat would make eggs very inedible, unrecognizable, and atomized.

Exactly what kind of 'Fine-Grain Powder' and 'Bronze Cannon' do you have on your War Canoe?
