What the determines the speed of sailing, on the Strategic (non-battle) Map?
Is it
1) only my flagships speed + eventual damage that determines the speed?
Or
2) ...is it the speed determined by the Slowest ship of my entire fleet?
I am asking since I've noticed that my speed on the strategic map seem to change, when I am changing flagship?? |

It is actually both of those factors. The speed of your flagship + damage determines how quickly you can take off and how fast you will travel until your slowest ship can no longer stay caught up to you. Then you have to wait for your ship to get in range and you'll take off at your original speed again.
Hope that makes sense, mate. _________________ I was sailin' the high seas, 'round the Florida Keys.
Trailin' that merchant ship, the one I'd catch and strip.
For she had me swag, and flyin' an English flag. |

The only factors that matter are 1) the speed of the flagship, 2) damage, and 3) the number of ships in your fleet. It does not seem to matter whether your non-flag ships are war canoes or fluyts - all that matters is their number. Every even-numbered vessel you add (2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th) reduces your fleet speed a bit.
I usually try to hold my fleet to three ships or fewer. I'll bet a single large frigate could outpace a fleet of eight war canoes! |

#1, but a secndary ship that falls way behind will cause the whole fleet to slow. _________________ Go Fishing.

Does anyone know if there is a difference in speed within the pinnace class. Is a war canoe faster than a mail runner? |

Yes, a war canoe is faster. In last year's race, my war canoe beat the mail runners in several legs.
In general, I think there might be small speed differences between ships of different sizes within each class. For example, a SotL feels slower to me than a Large Frigate. |

Very marginally, but there is a difference. _________________ Go Fishing.

Thanks. I didn't think so at first, and always looked for a mail runner, but then noticed the quicker turns and started to wonder. |

Does it make a difference sailing into the wind with full sales versus reefed? Obviously zigzaging probably is the smart choice, at least on real ships... and with that, is there a noticed beneficial way to do it? 45% angles into the wind for x time and tack 90? or does that extra mileage end up offsetting the speed pickup? |

I don't think it's that scientific... just experimant alittle and you will figure out the tacking angles. Full sails slways go faster, i think _________________ Go Fishing.

Yes, I believe full sails always make you move faster, while reefed sails allow you to turn more quickly. The latter consideration only matters in combat. It's also possible that reefing your sails might reduce damage to your vessel if you get caught in a storm, but it's easier to just avoid storms.
The best angle vis a vis the wind depends on your vessel. As a rule of thumb, big ships like to have the wind coming from directly astern, while small vessels like a crosswind. |

Also sailing in a storm will give you a short burst of speed
I also herd some where that if you time it just right you can carry on a ship battle in a storm |

Ahoy Warrior, welcome to Cutlass Isle.
I find the best speed from storms is when you can just skirt the edge, with the storm at your back. |

Welcome to Cutlass Isle Warrior!
In a ship battle, you can't really see storms, but you can detect them by the wind speed. Generally 10-18 knots is a small storm, and 18-30 knots is a large thunder cloud.
Tom - I have the same results. But if you use the storm right you can get going at a good speed in any direction. By the way, did you ever try the parry before attack to make your opponnent taunt? Someone in the "Just Keep Thrusting" forum mentioned it in the beginning, so it must not be a bug. |
