I think one benefit of retiring with a small crew is that they will be happier and wealthier, and that may help withthe invitation to move to the next level, and with recruiting after you divide the plunder.

The following quote from page 80 of the manual proves you to be absolutely right!

"The crew's opinion of their share determines you next crew's starting morale if you choose to start another voyage."

A very happy crew means not only lasting morale, but more eager recruits!
