Have you changed your mind about certain ships?
Yes, and it's good to learn what works better for me.

With fully upgraded ships, a navigator, and a barometer, I sailed from Santa Catalina to St. Kitts and back again three times. I noted and averaged the number of days it took. Because of good and bad luck with the wind direction and storms, the results are prone to error perhaps as much as 4 or 5 days. Here are the one-way averages with the ships I used.
    Frigate... 90.80
    Ship of the Line... 92.15
    War Canoe... 65.30
    Mail Runner... 64.45
War Canoe with Ship of the Line... 82.95
My main interest was to see if there was a speed difference between ships of the same class. The manual states that both the Frigate and the Ship of the Line are "Fast" which seems to indicate that they are equal in speed and I think they are. Same goes for the War Canoe compared to the Mail Runner. The War Canoe and the Ship of the Line together were significantly faster than the Ship of the Line alone.

Of course, this does not completely take into account the "best points of sailing" or turning radius for each type of ship. Plus, speed isn't everything ... but, if you're looking for the fastest, I'd say the War Canoe, Pinnace, and Mail Runner are all equally "Very Fast".

If you can catch them, war canoes are useful against other war canoes and other small ships (especially the ones with 1000 gold pieces on board Smile )

Using a War Canoe I defeated a Ship Of The Line - took a while - but with the speed and quick turns - SOTL was no match.

Also depends on the wind. The sotl can actually be faster in the right wind conditions. In swash the wind is much more random though.

Or you could load up a sotl with maximum crew, board ships without having to start sword fights.
