Tomorrow will be the 25th anniversary of the death of Canadian folk singer-songwriter Stan Rogers, who is best known for his nautical songs. You can hear him singing most of "Barrett's Privateers" here. The song starts about 25 seconds into the video.
This singing is very much in the tradition of chanties- song that sailors- and landlubbers- sang while doing repetitive work in teams...something that machinery took away from our culture...
Canadians have always had strong naval traditions...inherited from Britain, I suppose. We had the third largest navy in the Second World War. Halifax has always been a great naval base. Many Newfoundlanders were pirates- leaving the fishing fleets to go on adventures to the south!
