i like the brig class of ships. good speed in all winds, plenty of canons and crew, and the brig of war is not to hard to find, all you need to do is atack a town and let it ceep its nationalty. if you wate a ship payrole carrer will come along and most of the time it is a brig of war. ( invason forses are somtimes Brigs of war).

what do you all think about the brig. (the ship type and not a ship's jail)?

A fine ship to be sure. Sturdy, carries 32 guns, sails into the wind, and presents a small target. As I got enough wealth, I used to work toward a large fleet that included a Brig of War, usually along with a Mail Runner, a Royal Sloop and the largest frigate class ship I could get.

Lately I have been more interested in speed, and go for smaller fleets. More often a War Canoe with a SOTL, sometimes adding a Royal Sloop. I make the War Canoe the flag most of the time for sailing, and it tends to pull the fleet pretty quickly if it (the fleet) is not too large. Another approach, if your fencing is good enough, is to go with the War Canoe or a Meil Runner alone, or with a couple War Canoes. Some of us miss the broadsides, though, and if part of your game is to sack or capture and convert ciites, it really helps to have a larger ship as well.

I haven't done the comparision between the War Canoe and the Brig for sailing against the wind. I think the War Canoe is still faster, but I might be wrong. If the brig class would add speed against the wind, that would be a good argument for pairing the two in a fleet.

You won't find any concensus on this forum about what makes a good ship. Hehehe!

If you like the Brig, than by all means use it. Sailor

Don't let Rupert dissuade you with his obsession over War Canoes, or anyone else who likes Sloops or Ships of the Line.

Personally, I like seeing Brigs of War simply because they're usually carrying or escorting something valuable. Smile

Welcome to Cutlass Isle, wooaa! May your ship bear up a great fortune for ye, whatever that ship may be!

Aye! She turns well and has lines of sail that many other ships lack, allowing for more attack and sailing options. So, if that's your most successful ship, good hunting to ye!

I think highly of War Canoes, but there are more options. Aye, one might as well be at a banquet, yet only nibble on a single celery stick!

Sloops are also good, in the control of a clever sailor...

Pah! The Ship of the Line is the Roast Beef of the banquet!

Yet, one needs Yorkshire Pudding, gravy, onions, and vegetables too...
Smile
The best ship? That is indeed open to debate. Your favourite ship? Like a favourite colour, that is your exclusive domain, and no one can invade it!

Indeed the Ship of the Line is my personal favorite. It does make things a tad bit too easy though. I use me war canoe for the easier fights and my ship of the line if I have to reload.

When you have to pursue a War Canoe, I advise never to use a Ship of the Line...except in high winds. Otherwise, those little coxcombs will thumb their noses at ye as they get away...

I mostly use a War Canoe for battles, and save the Ship of the Line for special occasions- just like using your best silverware for the best event.

One special event is, when I am annoyed at an enemy nation for something or another, usually for daring to sail in the same ocean. It's time to make an example of them, so I get out the silverware, so to speak.

Yeah, I use my War Canoe or Mail Runner for anything Royal Sloop-class and down. I also use it against escorted ships, that way I can fly in quickly and board the rich prize, then take out the armed escort one on one.

Everything else gets to face 48 guns. Twisted Evil

Back on topic sorta, I've only had a Brig of War in my fleet once or twice. I used in some circumstance, but overall didn't feel the need to use it once I had a SotL.

Not to say other people can't enjoy it. It's just not for me.

The best think about the Brig- for me- is a simple reason. For me, it just looks cool, and like a pirate ship. I can't explain why, it just is the case.

I've used the brig class from time to time. I think they could be called a compromise ship design. They have some of the advantages of the small ship classes, and some of the advantages of the frigate class, plus they sail well in a lot of wind conditions. Not my favorite, but worth a try now and then.

I was intending to ask how you captured War Canoes with your Ships of the Line- but I believe that you might not deem such tiny ships as worthwhile targets any more...

I think if you have the wind on your side and your sailing southwards and the war canoe is in some kind of cove, you can can capture the canoe. I don't really bother anymore.
