1992 - Genoa, Italy[41] - Genoa Expo '92
1992 - cancelled (planned site: Chicago, U.S.)[52]
1993 - Daejeon (Taejon), South Korea[41] - Expo '93
1995 - Vienna, Austria which was proposed to be a joint exhibition with Budapest. This was never held[52]
1996 - cancelled (planned site: Budapest, Hungary)[52]

Not that, Either.

2000 - Hanover, Germany[53] - Expo 2000
2000 - Greenwich, London, United Kingdom - Millennium Dome[35]
2002 - cancelled (planned site: Metro Manila, Philippines)[54][55]
2002 - cancelled (planned site: Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia)[55]
2002 - Biel, Murten, Neuchâtel and Yverdon-les-Bains in Switzerland - Expo.02
2004 - cancelled (planned site: Seine-Saint-Denis, France)[56]
2004 - Barcelona, Spain - Universal Forum of World Cultures[35]
2005 - Aichi, Japan - Expo 2005[57]
2008 - Zaragoza, Spain - Expo 2008

---------------------------------------

I was very surprised to learn that one decade featured only 3 World's Fairs, and some years boasted 6 or 7 by themselves.

Perhaps 1911-1920?

Nope. Makes a lot of sense that a War to End All Wars, and the Spanish Flu Pandemic would stop everything. But it didn't, although it may have slowed the pace. It was back in the heyday of World's Fairs. Here's the list from just 1914!

1914 - London - Anglo-American Exhibition[35]
1914 - Malmö, Sweden - Baltic Exhibition
1914 - Boulogne-sur-Mer, France - International Exposition of Sea Fishery Industries (1914)
1914 - Lyon, France - Exposition internationale urbaine de Lyon
1914 - Cologne, Germany - Werkbund Exhibition (1914)
1914 - Bristol, United Kingdom - International Exhibition (1914)[37]
1914 - Nottingham, United Kingdom - Universal Exhibition (1914) (work begun on site 1913 but never held)[38][39]
1914 - Semarang, Dutch East Indies - Colonial Exhibition of Semarang (Colonial Exposition)
1914 - Kristiania, Norway - 1914 Jubilee Exhibition (Norges Jubilæumsutstilling)
1914 - Baltimore, United States - National Star-Spangled Banner Centennial Celebration[40]
1914 - Genoa, Italy - International exhibition of marine and maritime hygiene (Esposizione internazionale di marina e igiene marinara)

OK, I will guess the 1930's because of the Depression. It was felt world-wide.

I thought the same thing, gotta be prosperous cities, like the Olympics, right?
Maybe since the nature of the World Epos was as a commercial/industrial trade show and international advertising before color tv, they were run more efficiently than pseudo-government entities like the League of Nations/ Olympics/ United Nations. Maybe they were a lifeline for creating a little wealth.

I can't fit all of the 1930's World Fairs on my screen without shrinking the page size. I can't see a single Expo that was cancelled or failed to open that decade. So here' a list of only the American ones -

1931- Yorktown
1933-34 Chicago
1935-36 San Diego
1936- Cleveland
1936- Dallas
1937- Cleveland
1937- Dallas
1937- Miami
1939-40 New York
1939-40 San Francisco

That is a real surprise. I thought for sure things would dry up in the 1930's. I will let someone else go ahead and use a search engine. Good question!

Upon further reflection, Captain Teague's guess of the 1990s was pretty good in that it probably had the 2nd fewest fairs that were actually held.

You guys can look it up, or if nobody has next time I check in, I'll reveal the answer and declare the floor open.

From what I could find, it was the 1970s. Which would have been my fourth guess, after the 1960s.

I went ahead and looked it up. Depends how you count the decades. I am assuming you count it as Jan 1, 1970 to Dec 31, 1979. If so, there were four World's Fairs in the 1970's.

The question was "Which decade had the fewest World's Fairs in the past 100 years?" I would interpret this to include the decade of 1910 to 1919.
Here is what I found on Wikipedia.org on number of World's Fairs by decade

1910 3
1920 1
1930 7
1940 4
1950 9
1960 5
1970 4
1980 7
1990 5
2000 3
2010 4

So, the hands down winner is the Roaring 20's.

I GIVE UP!

I was using this list, entitled "World's Fairs" and the answer I was looking for was the 1970s.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_world%27s_fairs

1970 - Osaka, Japan[41] - Expo '70 (Japan World Exposition)
1974 - Spokane, United States[41][44] - Expo '74 (International Exposition on the Environment) - Riverfront Park
1975 - Okinawa, Japan[41][44] - Expo '75 (International Ocean Exposition)

Now I see that this list of "World Expositions" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_world_expositions somehow has four, all named Expo -

03/1970 – 09/1970
Expo '70
 Japan
Osaka
World Expo
Progress and Harmony for Mankind
Tower of the Sun
Moon rock
Electric Cars[8]

08/1971 – 09/1971
Expo 71
 Hungary
Budapest
Specialised Expo
The Hunt through the World
International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation (CIC)

05/1974 – 11/1974
Expo '74
 United States
Spokane
Specialised Expo
Celebrating Tomorrow's Fresh New Environment
IMAX

07/1975 – 01/1976
Expo '75
 Japan
Okinawa
Specialised Expo
The Sea We would like to See
Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

I am sorry to pose another question with no clear answer. The more I compare the two lists, the more muddled it seems to become.

I need a break from this.

I did the research and got it right in that the Roaring 20's had only one World's Fair or World's Exposition. So, I will go ahead and ask the next question:

Back to the Olympic Games again. What COUNTRY has hosted the most Olympic Games (both Summer and Winter Games) since the Olympics were re-introduced in 1896? This one should be easy.

The United States?
