That's the one, and I'd not heard of it either. Learned about it in this article, which is a good read for anyone interested in Sid Meier and his background, and includes interviews with Meier and some of the others involved in his projects.

Yeah well, hate to admit it but I can't think of a single French recording artist, past or present. I'd be hard pressed to name current American ones, even.
(Too much caffejuanahol in my youth, maybe).

The Heidi Game or Heidi Bowl was an American Football League (AFL) game played on November 17, 1968, between the Oakland Raiders and the visiting New York Jets. Does anybody know how this game got it's name. |

The television network (I can't remember which one) decided to stop broadcasting the football game before it ended, and instead show a made-for-TV film version of the 1880 novel "Heidi".
I can't remember who ended up winning the football game, but (if I remember correctly) after the network stopped broadcasting it, the team that had been behind made a comeback and won the game.
There was quite a stink about it. The TV networks changed policy and now carry games to completion. |

Good job Fleet. Your turn.
The game was notable for its exciting finish, in which Oakland scored two touchdowns in the final minute to win the game 43–32, but got its name for a decision by the game's television broadcaster, NBC, to break away from its coverage of the game on the east coast to broadcast the television film Heidi, causing many viewers to miss the Raiders' comeback.
In the aftermath of the incident, NBC installed special "Heidi phones", with a connection to a different telephone exchange from other network phones, to ensure that network personnel could communicate under similar circumstances. The game also had an influence on sports broadcasting practices; the future National Football League would contractually stipulate that all game telecasts be shown to their conclusion in the markets of the visiting team, while other major leagues and events adopted similar mandates. In 1997, the Heidi Game was voted the most memorable regular season game in pro football history.
I can't help but wonder if the fans on the east coast wouldn't have been pissed off anyway watching the New York Jets lose a game that they already had in the bag but on the other hand those Oakland west coast fans probably had already thrown a beer bottle through their screen so a good number of those might have missed it too. |
