I like all the Answers! But Rusty is closest. It is Radio Direction and Ranging.
Your turn Rusty!.... |

Good job Rusty but I'm not sharing my radar with you. It's all mine. |

I'll accept a picture of yours
I knew I was both wrong and close, but it took me a while to get there. In the process, my follow-up question became obvious: That other one I know because I've read it lots of times, but can never get right whenever I'm asked.
What does LASER stand for? |

I'd say the first one is light but I don't know. I've heard before but can't remember none of it. |

That's true. Maybe you guys can put your heads together. Maybe Roland can remember. Let's give him till 5PM Eastern time, and then open Mr. Google. No point in dragging it out . I figure the purpose of the quizz is a game to keep a game forum alive.
Clue- E stands for "Emission" ( I think that's the hardest word in the acronym ) |

Okay. Sorry if I already posed a similar question at some point. WWII aircraft is the subject. Particularly, the PBY Catalina ( the letter designation meant Patrol Bomber, Consolidated ) flying boat. They were already obsolete when the war began. Had a cruising speed only around 90-135 m.p.h. The virtues were that they a range of thousands of miles, could stay airborne for 24 hours, and could take off and land from the ocean, so they could basically come and go anywhere. Oh yeah, the factory could turn them out faster than anything new and improved. They fought the U-boats from the Panama Canal Zone to the coast of France. In the Pacific, by glide bombing at night, the tonnage they sunk was only surpassed by subs.
In the course of the war they played a key role in 3 major events about which movies were made. Well, 4 really, but burning at Pearl Harbor was a passive role. Tora! Tora! Tora!, etc. doesn't count.
Guess what they did, or guess one of the movies. |

I am going to guess they spotted the Japanese Fleet as it steamed towards Midway Island.
They also picked up pilots whose planes were damaged or malfunctioning and could not make it back to the aircraft carrier or base. |
