Thank you guys. Forgot to mention that the fine bottle in the image is that of Ron Zacapa Centenario 23 Solera - one of the best rums available.
And the fedora is one of my favourites. _________________ It is much better to be armed with a sword that has two edges than with an estoc [...], which is nothing more than a stick with a point. (Rapier Master G. Morsicato Pallavicini, La Scherma Illustrata, p. 14.) |

If he hasn't thrown a rock, then maybe he should heave his first one at Mr. Smarty Pants the Little Bear. _________________ " ... the mistakes that we male and female mortals make when we have our own way might fairly raise some wonder that we are so fond of it. " George Eliot |

Cutlass for me. The rapier is fun and easy to use... if you're not playing Swashbuckler. If you are, then fencing is really difficult without the cutlass. _________________ Every time you capture a SoL a kitten dies. So please sink the SoLs |

I really suppose - any sword works - as long as it is set to Stab Mode |

Play cutlass until you get good, then pick up a rapier and
Kick butt!
I played with cutlass ONLY for two years. Now I usually play rapier unless against Montalbahn, then I use the cutlass. |

I use the rapier which I replaced level 2 with exopath and level 3 with a katana. Skins and bones altered accordingly. Not wimpy! |

When I first started playing in the olden days - I used Cutlass due to the extra damage it inflicted. |

Me too.
I really like the health system in Pirates! Gold where getting hitted by the enemy's sword would affect the main character's overall health.
When I first started playing the game and wasn't good enough a swordman, I was battlescarred and in poor health just after a couple of fights. It didn't take long time when I was master with the cutlass. That health system really made me want to learn the fencing.
Also, Gold is more violent than the 2004 version with blood pouring on the character's forehead to his eyes when getting hit in the head.. |

My opinion is still unchanged. Most of the time I use Rapier because it ends the fight quickly. However, if I am playing against Monty or the Suitor of a Beautiful Daughter, I use the cutlass because my reflexes are just not fast enough. Having said that, the other way to go is to just use the rapier and hold down the F1 key, take your pick. The cutlass really is the cool tool, it looks and fells awesome! |

I agree with you, Salty Dog, that the rapier is the weapon of choice when the fight is on an enemy ship and have to win quickly (because of the manpower). One-vs-one duels against the Monty or the suitors or everyone else (wanted criminals, captains of the guard), when there's no crew to worry for, is best to deal with the cutlass. It just feels so much more pirate! And it's fun to taunt them (except Monty) between defence moves:
Also 'cause there's no way I could beat the main villain of the game (Monty) with the rapier or longsword, cutlass get's a point for this. Every other situation can be dealt with the quick low slashes and the thrusts of the rapier. And this is on an Adventurer -lvl. I'm just not good enough for the harder difficulties. |
