It always bugged me that the Indian war canoes had Spanish names. I think I have figured a way around that. It requires either a patch or a direct mod to the .exe.

1) change the "ship type" value from 00 to 02 for war canoes. This is at offset 325B10 in the .exe. This will cause Indian war canoes to be assigned ship names from the #SPANISH PIRATES section of shipnames_enu.txt.

2) put your new "Indian" sounding ship names in the #SPANISH PIRATES section of shipnames_enu.txt (see above). I'm using fish and predatory animal names for my war canoes (e.g. "jaguar", "anaconda", "mako", etc). Not exactly Aztec sounding but to me it beats "Nuestra Senora de Cabo" for a war canoe.

3) if you don't want Spanish sloops occupied as smugglers to have the new Indian names, change the sloop ship type from 02 to 01. This is at offset 325B54. This will cause all smuggler sloops (for every nation) to use the warship names of their respective nationality.

I'm using this and so far it appears to be working fine.

I made a patch to implement lurtz's directions:

indian_shipnames.zip

and put together a list of ship names that are Nahuatl (Aztec).

One bug that was always there, but that this change highlights, is that when an Indian village spawns 3 war canoes at once, they all get the same name.

on another thread some1 said it wouldn't download with IE or firefox.

I chose select all just under the zip instead of the lower LH download button and viola another download link appears (it works for IE)

Hi Amaroy -

There are several threads that explain how to use smp_patch.pl. You have to install perl on your computer and locate your SMP executable, and pull up a prompt (DOS or Unix Terminal). Then you pass the patch file to the smp_patch.pl script.

See "Executable Patching System" or "East Indies Mod" or "Spanish Frigates Mod" for examples.

I did the changes myself and have been using these for the Carib:

#SPANISH PIRATES
Taino, M
Carib, M
Kasike, M
Maran, M
Jibaro, M
Juey, M
Coqui, M
Boriken, M
Aloi, M
Ay Ay, M
Soualiga, M
Malliouhana, M
Liamuiga, M
Oualie, M
Alliouagana, M
Waladli, M
Ocananmanrou , M
Karukera, M
Aichi, M
Touloukaera, M
Kairi, M
Jouanacaeira, M
Hewanorra, M
Hairouna, M
Becouya, M
Cannouan, M
Kayryouacou, M
Camerhogne, M
Tobago, M
Ayiti, M
Cobao, M
Yamaye, M
Iguana, M
Mucaro, M
Guaraguao, M
Cobo, M
Carey, M
Jicotea, M
Manati, M
Buruquena, M

Don't forget you lose the specific smuggler names ("english pirates" etc) and they have to share names with that country's warships for this to work. That's the extra change OP mentions of changing the sloop ship type from 02 to 01 at offset 325B54

Very first set of two 0s. (well, it's four bytes, so 02 00 00 00 instead of 00 00 00 00, right before the next 4-byte integer which is 32 00 00 00). I think that's why he gave the offset as 325B10, which is the beginning of the line (325B12 would be the next two 0s)
