Well, the game is still in alpha, and I wouldn't recommend it as yet.
But I think I'm hooked. I get a few hours of excitement, and then something goes wrong, like getting wounded in the first exchange of fire, or having a ship blown out of the water before I think I'm in range to shoot back. For want of a captain, the flagship was lost. For want of a flagship the battle, if not the fleet is lost. So it's play for one or two sessions and start fresh.
I must not have been doing too badly, I was governor of 3 towns on the Spanish Main, including Coro. |

What do you rate the game out of 100? |

80 something.
A great game should be easy to learn and dificult to master.
This one isn't there yet. Instructions are minimal. I think a lot of people would lose patience as it is now, too much trial and error.
Compared to Pirates!, it's more realistic and 3-dimensional. I play without sound, music, or blood effects. I haven't had any crashes. Others do.
There's no women, and no dancing. There's no reefs to tear out the bottom of your ship.
But you can fall overboard, and get a view of the sandy bottom and the ships' hulls until the battle is resolved. But at least your band of warriors fights on while you are drowning or unconscious. |

I'm getting better at this, playing as a loyal Englishman ( because tit seems to be more likely to get appointed governor of an outlying town and gain rent income early on, which covers my payroll), I was able to capture a Spanish patrol which attacked me. So I added a Brig of War and a Barque and dropped my large Fluyt.
Then when peace was declared with Spain and war began with the brotherhood of the coast, I was attacked by Henry Morgan and managed to capture his 4th rate frigate. Now I was ready to roll!
When war came with the Dutch shortly afterward... I had a pair of consecutive battles in which my boarding party spawned in the seas and drowned. That loses the ship, not to mention my mates. That pretty much finished that game.
Well, it's alpha and it's got glitches and balance issues. That's why I don't recommend it yet. |

Well, they finally came out with a massive update, and they also put the game on sale this week.
I haven't had enough time to test it, but if interested in this game you should take another look at it. Watch the new videos.
It's $9.74 until Sep 16th. |

It's expected to reach Beta version by the end of the year.
I thought Wolfwood might enjoy hearing about the swords.
There are various ones in the game. In no particular order...
Cutlass
Small sword
Rapier
Broadsword ( in Infantry, Cavalry, and Basket hilt variants )
Schiavona ( it seems to be the best )
The prices and stats vary according to condition.
Old can't be improved ( I know the feeling).
Chipped
Rusty ( a personal favorite )
Rich
Balanced
Exquisite
The chipped and rusty ones can be restored by the weapon smith for less total cost than buying new.
To be honest, I'd rather use a musket or a pistol, but when the range closes, you're better off reaching for your sword most of the time. Those charging Spaniards don't like to wait for your wheel lock to fire. |

I think I last played in November.
Mostly. I've been in a reading mood, and I was expecting an update at the time, and didn't want to put time and effort into my character only to have the game update and lose the save.
Now they are pushing back the upgrade, saying they are making feature cuts in the interest of functionality and will be increasing the price and officially becoming Beta.
Frankly I'm confused.

After the negative feedback to the last announcement, the developers followed up with this-

I think I would pay the $15 at this point if I'd been sitting on the sidelines, we have a clearer idea of what the game will be, and it's better to buy ahead of the price increase. |

Well it's now in Beta phase.
The current version is 1.020, and the price is $19.99
I find that it's functioning much better now. |
