|
|
The SEA mod would feel complete with a junk model to represent Chinese ships that sailed in the South China Sea and elsewhere at the time. Scouring through this forum it looks like a junk model for the model was planned at one time about a decade ago, but I can’t find anything since. Is there a (likely unfinished) model out there? I’d love to see it in the mod. |

While there are Chinese Junk ship models around on the Internet
Google search on say junk ship 3d model
For example
https://open3dmodel.com/3d-models/junk
As far as I can recall, nobody has ever managed to import any of these to be
useable as a SM pirates NIF file |

Welcome to the forum, I think parksbanyon was working on one for a while but it was never completed.
As I recall, there's enough instructions in different threads that someone with some basic graphic design ability could make one using the same techniques. Nifs and stuff (I'm clueless in that area so have focused on modding every other area of the game) |

Thanks! Parks is the person I was thinking of. He discussed having made a junk hull here: http://hookedonpirates.com/forwarder.html?http://hookedonpirates.com/forums/
I have zero experience in 3D modelling myself unfortunately. I did have this thought though: Civ IV runs on the same engine as Pirates, right? Among the countless mods people have made for Civ, surely there's been a model of a Chinese-type junk formatted for that game. Could that asset be transferred to Pirates? |

For sharing threads, right click on the small page icon at the top of the first post (beside "Posted:" and the date), and copy that link. Otherwise our wonderful decades-old forum tends not to deal with links too well...
I think SMP is its own beast when it comes to mesh models like ships, but I'd have to defer to someone more qualified to speak on that |

The impression I got is that Sid Meier's Pirates game is an orphan
compared to the CIV games
Someone did import the Sid Meier Pirates default ships to CIV 3
but no idea how it was done
Stumbled over the release thread only
(have not found any development thread as yet)
Civ 3 ships borrowed from Sid Meier's Pirates!

I apologize, I meant to link to here: http://hookedonpirates.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=93073&sid=ce186e10eac211aeaeae9cc97d6f4173#93073
Might those parts of the junk model still exist somewhere? If this person is still active.
I did see the ships in Civ 3. I guess I'll have to try dropping a model from Civ into Pirates myself to see if it works. I haven't converted a model before and would need to learn how. |

The models in SMP are in .NIF format. I do not know what format the models in CIV use. At a minimum, the CIV models would need to be converted to NIF format and renamed.
The texture files in SMP are in DDS format. I do not know what format the model textures in CIV use. |

Civilization IV (2005) is also a Gamebryo Engine game
Civilization III is apparently a Fraxis Custom Game Engine
Sid Meier Pirates (2004) was the First Fraxis developed
Gamebro Engine game
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamebryo
(formerly NetImmerse until 2003)
The FPK Archives are container files,
so File formats may vary between different games

Based on my research so far, it appears Civ IV uses DDS and .NIF as well!
Even better, I happen to have a Civ IV mod on my laptop hard drive, "Realism Invictus," which has multiple good junk models. I'm going to see if I can extract one of them and put in in Pirates. I'll post the model file here. Now I just have to figure out how to unpack these games' files. |

I unpacked mine using a sawed off double barrel 12 gauge shotgun but it busted my screen out so I can’t really tell you whether it got unpacked or not but I don’t see how I could have missed a folder by taking out the entire screen. |

Unpacking Files
Check if the application status is UNPACKER (if the caption on the button is unpack then you are good to go). If you are not go to File-->Unpack and you should see the caption of the button changing from Pack to Unpack. Specify the location of the package file and a directory where the contents will be unpacked. Press the button and wait untill the process finishes. (The contents of the log box will flicker untill the app finishes).

I'm trying to use fpkpacker and I'm getting an error message that says "Read beyond end of file." What does that mean? |

Oh boy that’s a bad one. Never read anything past the end of a file. That’s where the boogie man is and trust me was you to read past the end it really is your end. |
