Locate your
\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Pirates!\Config.ini
open config.ini:
should be:
[User Settings]
Gamma = 1.000000
KeypadStatus = 1
DisplayShadows = 1
TrilinearFiltering = 1
DisableShaders = 1
AdvancedLighting = 1
WindowWidth = 1280
WindowHeight = 960
WaterDetail = 0
WorldDetail = 5
ObjectDetail = 2
MasterVolume = 1.000000
MusicVolume = 1.000000
SFXVolume = 1.000000
DanceVolume = 1.000000
IsSlowMachine = 0
MyName = ElBaltazar
3DAudioDriver = Dolby Surround
CustomSail = ship_sail_emblem_lrg_pir.dds
CustomFlag = flag_pir.dds
If config.ini file is not present
Create the file yourself. Right click some empty space within the folder, go to New... > Text Document, erase the .txt extension, and name it config.ini.
make sure you're in Sid Meier's Pirates under the "My Games" in the "My Documents" NOT in the steam files

Nvidia based solution for playing FULL SCREEN 4 x 3 aspect ratio in Windows 11 with proper mouse function

This may work for other video cards but this is using an Nvidia 1060.
Open NVIDIA CONTROL Panel
Display / Change resolution
Customize button.
IF you don't see that, I didn't, you should a resize or perhaps resolution tab on the page that I can no longer see. You can create a custom resolution from there. AFTER I did that I found the Customize button and not such tab. See details below
IF you click on the Customize button you will get a pop up panel. Set the Enable resolutions not exposed by the display Check Box, or don't as it does not seem to matter.
Instructions for this are based on my 1920 x1080 LCD monitor.
Set horizontal pixels to 1440
Vertical lines to 1080
Leave everything else alone
Click on the Test button
IF OK then hit the OK button or whatever it was. Let it time out if your screen is screwed up.
You now have a screen with black pillars on the side. IF you had previously added
Fullscreen = 0
To your Pirates config file THEN you probably should try it that way first. I did.
Then I set that line to
Fullscreen = 1
Save the config file
Launch Sid Meir's Pirates in Full Sceen. With a fully functioning mouse. And in the Video panel for the game you should now have a 1440 X 1080 option, Try it, it worked for me.
The only real issue is that you will have to reset you Nvidia control back to have a full 1920 by 1080 screen again. I kept the control panel open and can flip back and forth between the custom seting that is now in resolution list and the full. You will have to restart most programs to get them to look right.
OK I wrote all that without fully adjusting the Nvidia control panel. It seems to work but now the Control panel is back to having scaling and size tabs. Its the size tab that is needed to get the custom resolutions.
By Setting or unsetting the Override the scaling mode set by games and programs you can get the screen to fully adapt to the changed resolutions.
Set the Override tick box change resolution drop down to the custom resolution and click on the Apply box to play Pirates
When finished
Unset the Override tick box to get back to you native resolution.

This is easier, then my previous solution, at least for Windows 11. Open Settings, display, click on the drop down for Display resolution and choose 1440 x 1080, at least if you have that option. When finished playing Pirates reset it to your native resolution.
I tried that before and the screen did work right, turns out that Windows 11 is now, at least on my PC, balking at running in 1920 x 1080 with a refresh rate of 144. Which had been working till I upgraded my Nvidia drivers.
The game was designed for a 4x3 aspect ration and if you want a fully functioning mouse and don't want to run in window this should do the trick. |

How to Play in HD/UHD
Higher resolution rendering is already built into Sid Meier's Pirates! But if you don't use the correct aspect ratio, mouse clicking won't work right.
The config.ini file is in your DOCUMENTS->MY GAMES->SID MEIER's PIRATES! folder. For UHD (3840x2160), copy and paste this:
[User Settings]
Gamma = 1.000000
KeypadStatus = 1
DisplayShadows = 1
TrilinearFiltering = 1
DisableShaders = 0
AdvancedLighting = 1
WindowWidth = 2880
WindowHeight = 2160
WaterDetail = 3
WorldDetail = 5
ObjectDetail = 2
MasterVolume = 1.000000
MusicVolume = 1.000000
SFXVolume = 1.000000
DanceVolume = 1.000000
IsSlowMachine = 0
MyName = John Blackthorn
3DAudioDriver = Creative Labs EAX (TM)
Fullscreen = 0
CustomSail =
CustomFlag =
For HD (1920x1080) change the WindowWidth and WindowHeight to:
WindowWidth = 1440
WindowHeight = 1080
The key is that the height of the window must be 75% the width of the window.
Note that Fullscreen is disabled; it won't work on Windows 10 with this game, not sure about other operating systems. (worked fine when I played this years ago on Windows XP, of course)
AND:
If you're getting an error message that it "can't find Steam", copy the steam.dll file from the Steam folder into the Sid Meier's Pirates! folder. Instant and complete fix. |

Solution for playing Sid Meier's Pirates under Windows 11 with an Nvidia Video Card not in a window with 4x3 aspect ratio and proper mouse control

This may work for other video cards but this is using an Nvidia 1060.
Pirates was designed for a 4 x 3 aspect ration and playing it in wide screen messes with the images and the mouse. This is so you can play it the way its designed. For some unknown reason, trying to play it in a window in Windows 11 is messed up, the window sticks to the bottom of the screen and the mouse is not synched with the window under most settings. So I got serious about a fix.
Open NVIDIA CONTROL Panel
Display / Change resolution
Customize button.
IF you don't see that, I didn't, you should see a resize or perhaps resolution tab on the page that I can no longer see.
Fullscreen = 0
To your Pirates config file THEN you probably should try it that way first. I did.
Then I set that line to
Fullscreen = 1
Save the config file
Launch Sid Meir's Pirates and it will be Full Screen, well as full it can be, 1440 with black pillars. With a fully functioning mouse. And in the Video panel for the game you should now have a 1440 X 1080 option, Try it, it worked for me.
The only real issue is that you will have to reset you Nvidia control back to have a full 1920 by 1080 screen again. I kept the control panel open and can flip back and forth between the custom setting that is now in resolution list and the full. You may have to restart most programs to get them to look right.
OK I wrote all that without fully adjusting the Nvidia control panel. It seems to work but now the Control panel is back to having scaling and size tabs. Its the size tab that is needed to get the custom resolutions.
By Setting or unsetting the check box labeled - Override the scaling mode set by games and programs - you can get the screen to adapt to the changed resolutions.
Set the Override tick box and set the resolution drop down to the desired custom resolution and click on the Apply box to play Pirate
When finished
Unset the Override tick box to get back to you native resolution.
To have a working mouse the resolution must have an 4 to 3 aspect ratio. Hence the 1440 X 1080 custom for 1920 by 1080 screens
Suggestions for
4k - 3840 X 2160 set custom resolution to 2880 X 2160
2560 X 1440 set custom resolution to 1920 X 1440
There may be a similar way to do this with AMD video cards but I don't own one. I have no idea if there is a way to apply this to Intel Graphics. |
