SM pirates MAC not supported with MacOS Catalina

https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Sid_Meier%27s_Pirates!_(2004)

EDIT : past link into your Browser

The macOS (OS X) version of this game does not work on macOS Catalina (version 10.15) or later due to the removal of support for 32-bit-only apps.

The complete list of 32-bit Mac games no longer supported

the removal of 32-bit support

With the latest version of macOS, Catalina, games not updated to 64-bit will no longer work at all. And with Catalina’s surprise release yesterday, October 7, this means you won’t be able to play several games you own if you decide to upgrade.

To help you navigate these uncertain times, we decided to track all the games we know won’t be updated:

Game Developer Genre Status

Sid Meier's Pirates! Feral Interactive Strategy Discontinued

Also tracking the back-catalog games that have been updated to 64-bit (new games are all 64-bit)

Sounds like I am screwed with this upgrade. I already downloaded and installed the upgrade. Oh well, I am keeping my PC and will play the game on that machine. Thanks for the heads up!

That stinks. I wonder if enough people would raise a fuss that 'the powers that be" would issue a patch that corrects the problem. Perhaps a third party will develop a work around program.

To be fair to Apple,
this was probably well signalled in advance would happen.

Apple warned with the previous MacOS release to Catalina that this would be the last 32-bit compatible version.
Apparently it also gave regular 32-bit App software warnings that such apps would no longer work with future 64-bit only Mac OS versions, and apps would require 64-bit updates.

macOS 10.14 Mojave Will Be the Last to Support 32-Bit Apps
https://tidbits.com/2018/06/12/macos-10-14-mojave-will-be-the-last-to-support-32-bit-apps/
June 12 2018

SM pirates Mac was released back around 2008,
and sadly no 64-bit Mac game update will ever be available and game has instead been discontinued in advance of the release of Catalina and is no longer sold retail.

(Any 3rd party interested in producing a 64-bit update apart from funding,
would need access to the source code and game has not been made open source, so probably not going to happen.)

Options appear to be at a guess:

Delay upgrading to Catalina for as long as possible.
(probably not recommended by Apple and future Mac hardware will probably be sold with Catalina anyway, so will become the future Minimum OS version for newer hardware.)

Downgrade to the previous Mac OS 10.14 version Mojave if you already have Catalina
(assuming this is even possible and not a long term solution)

Macs with Intel CPUs are supposed to capable of emulating Microsoft Windows and Windows Applications or Games at a cost.
(see Parallels article link below)

A windows 10 PC as a 2nd system for SM pirates may be a better more practical option.
(Windows 7 Supports expires in Jan 2020)
Avoid Intel Integrated Graphics for gaming , AMD Graphics preferred

An Alternative is emulating an older MacOS such as Mojave in a virtual machine. (Games may not work so well in a virtual machine, certainly Windows games typically don't because of DirectX).

Steam and macOS 10.15 Catalina

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1055-ISJM-8568

Options to keep 32-bit Mac games playable on a Mac computer:

Consider not upgrading to macOS 10.15 or above. By staying on macOS 10.14 Mojave or older you will ensure that your 32-bit apps are still playable on your Mac computer.

After upgrading to macOS 10.15 Catalina, consider installing macOS 10.14 Mojave on a separate APFS volume on your computer along with Steam. This will allow you to flip over to macOS 10.14 on restart of your computer where you can continue to play all of your 32-bit Mac games. More information here.
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208891

Use Bootcamp on Mac to launch your games in Windows on your Mac computer. More information about Bootcamp can be found here.
https://support.apple.com/boot-camp

If you haven't already updated to Mac OS Catalina
you may want to disable Mac OS automatic updates

Don't want your Mac to automatically update to Catalina
Then follow these two simple steps to avoid the automatic update:

1.) Turn off Automatic Updates. On Mojave, the setting is in System Preferences > Software Update. On High Sierra and earlier, the setting is under the App Store Preferences.

2.) You will still see occasional notifications that the update is available, but you can dismiss them and continue running your current version of macOS.

From reading around a few threads, any 32-bit Mac emulation app will also no longer work and will take a while to move over to 64-bit only Catalina.

Apple could have for example shaken loose some funding and paid to have as many 32-bit games ported over to 64-bit as possible, but didn't bother and economics for the Game developers appear simply not to justify the expense for the limited expected returns.
Avoiding the Apple reputational damage alone would probably have been worth it.

EDIT:
Seems Apple already did something similar with iOS11

Apps that run on Apple’s older 32-bit architecture will cease to function in iOS 11 (expected Fall 2017)

Check
Settings > General > About > Applications

Apple is expected to get rid of all the 32-bit code from iOS itself

2017 Hardware List

The following iOS devices are 64-bit:

iPhone 5s/SE/6/6s/7
iPad Air and iPad Air 2
iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3 and iPad mini 4
Sixth-generation iPod touch
12.9-inch iPad Pro and 9.7-inch iPad Pro
9.7-inch iPad (2017)

Any Apple device older than iPhone 5s will be rendered obsolete, once Apple does away with the 32-bit support.

The current version, iOS 13 was released to the public on September 19 2019

As I'm definitely determinated to play SMP regularly in the next 150 years, this really worries me.

Is there any hope for a less complicated workaround than working with external drives or bootcamp? It would be really weird to be able to play the 1987 version on a C64 emulator that runs on 64 bit and NOT be able to play the 2008 version of the same game.

My solution is to keep an old laptop that runs the old OS. I have a Windows XP machine that I use only for gaming and file storage. I turned off the wifi several years ago, so the machine is not subject to updates or viruses.

I reject the new ideology that says you should have one (preferably tiny) machine that does everything you can imagine. Different, specialized machines are better at what they do. I also reject the ideology that says you should be connected to the web 24/7, so I don't need an all-purpose machine that fits in my pocket. (I also turn off my non-smart phone when I go to bed so that I can sleep in peace.)

REF: definitely determinated to play SMP regularly in the next 150 years.

Admire your ambition but answer depends on what hardware platform.

From some reading around some, most of the Apple emulator guys on Mac OSX are effectively having to start from scratch and getting their products to work on 64-bit (if they don't already) and then try to reverse engineer 32-bit OSX support into it before they can even think of any games emulation. This translate into it will be ready when it's ready whenever.

The loss of 32-bit support also means OSX 32-bit emulators also don't work either on Catalina or later OSX versions.

One further wrinke is Apple does tends to be lawsuit happy over software rights issues and they now only want to sell 64-bit hardware/software.
Apple System roms (apple equivalent of the PC Bios) have always been Apple copyrighted.
Apple tends to be known as "Dark Fruity" because of the number of lawsuits.

For example I recall the lawsuit against Samsung US in the US over Google Android OS look and feel (even though Google is not a South Korean company and Apple didn't sue Google directly). Last I heard subject to various counter-appeals.

In Europe the same case didn't go beyond 10 mins - you can't sue over
something you didn't even invent (Both Android and Mac OSX are Linux-Unix derivatives) and Samsung outselling you in smartphones and Tablets is no grounds for a spoiler lawsuit (build a better widgit people actually want to buy!) - instant case dismissed wth costs awarded to the defendant. No Grounds for a further appeal. Their coffee didn't even go cold, it was that quick.

Windows is a bit more open system than say Apple for emulation
(probably much more than Microsoft really wants it to be)

Current situation as I see it

Best option

Spare Win7 or XP PC system for Windows
Mac OSX (32-bit OSX 10.14 version Mojave) System for MAC OSX
and never ever upgrade the OS, disable all automatic updates.
Unplug the Network cable and don't bother configuring the Wi-Fi.
If you could create a Hard drive disk Image would be best,
Any issues just reapply the image

Linux is the OS of choice as as emulation Host but software rights are a
hinderance. Also Microsoft/Apple are more than capable of moving things on to keep the emulator guys at bay if they get close.
DirectX emulation tends to be major issue for Windows Games emulation.

I personally would really love a Linux with emulation as standard for

16-bit MS-DOS & win3x (Just like dosbox)
32-bit Window 9x, Windows XP & Windows 7-10 (Virtualbox like)
64-Bit Windows 7-10
All versions of DirectX 3-12, Glide & OpenGL Graphics
Android OS Emulation

lncludes a current standard Linux distribution Native software
with Office and Backoffice server equivalent applications etc

May as well throw in Mac OSX 32-bit 10.14 version Mojave as well
Playstation, Wii & Xbox console emulation could be other possibilites

Emulates PC hardware so all Windows Drivers work in a Wrapper
So all your USB devices, Printers, Scanners hardware etc just work
in an End User friendly - Insert DVD and just install just like Windows,
as far as software is concerned it's just a version of windows.

The Emulation guys are much closer than is generally realised to all this
apart from the game consoles. Wii emulation is quite advanced.
All console games are developed on PCs running console emulators - final testing is done on actual console hardware.
Sony treats its playstation emulator like the crown jewels, if it ever got leaked they would probably never ever sell another hardware console and have taken legal action against any 3rd party console emulators.

Microsoft/Apple/Sony et al would never ever allow it
They have big battalions of lawyers and would lawsuit it to death,
so can't see it ever happen. It wouldn't be just a gentle cease & desist letter either but an instant we are suing letter.

There is also the slight problem is that the developers would like to eat
the same as the rest of us, so funding and expected level of return issues.

A PC System is also not really that practical to hook up to your spare TV
like a console.

A refresh release of SM pirates! would be the ideal solution but
the costs factored against the expected returns.
It would have happened already if it was going to happen.

PC version needs wide screen support and a working Graphics resolution
changer.
MAC and ipad need 64-bit versions

Would love a new modable version of pirates!
with various further piracy locales:
North Sea, European Atlantic Coast, Mediterranean, Gulf, South China Seas. Horn of Africa and Indian ocean etc

Various Historical Settings and privateering, Corsairs
1812 War, Napoleonic, Spanish Armada etc

Ability to Capture Hostages, stock the Harem or Raiding etc
play as all genders

scripted AI that you could edit

and a SDK for Characters and locations creation and editing, scenarios etc

Think of the elder scrolls RPG games such as Morrowind and Oblivion and the sheer amount of user content generated for those games,
or even SM Civilisation.
If you even do a fraction of that!

but sadly think it's only going to ever remain a wish list

Just a thought which may not be practical.

Maybe The Mac OSX Users would say launch a crowd funding attempt to pay for a 64-bit OSX version update by Feral Interactive, the SM pirates! Mac OSX developers.

a google search on say

crowdfunding how to

to get started on this.

Would need to reach out to Feral Interactive to see if they would even be interested in doing it (is it simply lack of funding the issue and not other issues like say game licensing) and how much it would realistically cost and can that amount be raised.
Would probably also need help in testing. so beta testers required.

Because SM pirate! game uses specific memory locations may not
be as simple as just running the 32-bit code through a 64-bit compiler
to generate a new game executable. Code may have compatability issues
with a 64-bit processor.

Bear in mind PC Windows SM pirates! still runs on a Windows PC 64-bit OS so an alternate option does exist.

As to why a PC user would say fund a MC game version
Some of the best modding on SM pirates has been done by guys Playing the MAC game version
It is simply returning the favour
The more people who help out, the less cost for everyone
and good karma!
