"Indian Relic" and "Jesuit Cross"
Yes

Sashanan FAQ Strategy guide had orginally stated
The "Indian Relic" and "Jesuit Cross" had no effect
as then thought not to be properly implemented,
and that was the prevailing view for a long time afterwards.

[9.2] WEIRD THINGS

Indian/pirate/missionary relations do not appear to be implemented at all.
While Indians and pirates occasionally use the "steer clear you scurvy pirate"
line on you if you've attacked them a lot, you can still visit their villages
and havens and get all the support you need. Similarly, settlements are always
friendly to you even if the nation they belong to has a large price on your
head. And they'll still happily let you escort (and backstab) their governors.

but later research shows the "Jesuit Cross" to actually influence the Monks
"Indian Relic" is now also thought to influence the natives

originally claimed)

EDIT:

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/VideoGame/SidMeiersPirates
(Click on YMMV Button, Scroll down to the Obvious Beta Section)

The 2004 version shipped with several intended features not available.

As originally intended, you would have needed to build up your relationship with the Indians and the Jesuits before they would help you, but instead, they just trust you completely all the time.

There are items that are described as improving your relations with Indians or Jesuits, but what they actually do is reduce the time you have to wait after the Indians or Jesuits have given you a mission before they can give you a new one.

This means the in-game descriptions of said items are quite misleading, and have led many players to believe that they do nothing at all.

Here's how to play forever without retiring

You probably think there's 2 things stopping you, namely age and crew morale.

Crew Morale - It is possible to keep your crew happy regardless of how long you've been out on a voyage. This is dependant on your total amount of gold. The longer you play, the more gold is required and you will eventually need ~1000 gold per crew member to keep them "unhappy". ~2000 for "content" and ~3000 for "happy". But that's the cap, you never need more than that, once it reaches that number it stops. How long does it take until they demand ~1000 gold? It takes 68 months on Apprentice and -1 month per difficulty level. So 64 months on Swashbuckler.

You do NOT need more gold on harder difficulties. It only changes the grace period. So your cut as a captain doesn't affect this. The ~1000 gold per crew member is if you have a cook. If you don't have one you're going to need more. However it seems like the quartermaster doesn't have any affect on this and seems to be completely useless.

If you divide the plunder you reset all this and you have to start over.

Age - Once you reach a certain age you start getting slower in the mini-games (sword fencing e.t.c.), this gets worse until you reach the age of 42, higher if you have medicine skill and/or herbs. If you have the best herbs and the medicine skill it's age 54.

Anyway, once you reach 42 and you divide the plunder you'll be forced to retire because of your age. But if you never divide the plunder this never happens. You cannot die from old age and your slowness from age caps at 42, assuming you don't have medicine or herbs. So as long as you can keep your crew from going mutinous so you never have to divide the plunder you can play indefinitely. I strongly suggest you get the special items to lessen the effects of your age. Such as balanced swords, fencing shirts e.t.c.

So to recap, you need enough gold (~1000) per crew member and you should never divide the plunder to play indefinitely.

Even On Journeyman

Even On Journeyman

There's no finding the Inca trasure if it's near Gran Granada. There's also no finding a lost relative if it's not near some landmark (west of Santiago just doesn't hack it). So I found only one relative, and no Inca treasures. Tough break.

Try saving the game then dividing the plunder and return to your career, this should cause a re-spawn of the cities, treasure etc. any maps will update and you may then find landmarks etc. are showing.

This usually cleared those damn bugs on the CD version at least, the problem is dividing the plunder can end your game if you're too old.

Space Giraffe

I'm late to the party, but:

Regarding Gran Granada (or Campeche): try looking around the Bay of Honduras. Just as you crash on the land, you will find a lake there (Lake Izabal, in fact, but the game does not name it - it is actually barely visible on the in-game map). Whatever you are looking for should be in close proximity to this lake.
https://i.imgur.com/jQCwcOo.png (look at the red X, where the current location of my ship is marked - that's the spot)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Izabal
It's a well-known bug/oversight by the devs. It may also get triggered when things spawn "south of Campeche". It's a long way.

Regarding "west of Santiago": Are you playing a campaign before 1660? If so, "west of Santiago" might be referring to the western coast of Jamaica (rather than Cuba), which before 1660 would not have any major cities - at that point, Port Royale still has to be founded. Settlements and pirate havens don't count as reference points for maps in the game (because they are randomly generated and they vary at each playthrough, making them non-historical), so the game finds the closest real-life city to Jamaica - which is Santiago - and gives you an ambiguous lead.

One good rule to follow is to check whether landmarks (temples, shacks, dead trees, geysers etc.) are solid or if you can pass through them - just walk into them to check. If you are unable to walk through those landmarks, they are the ones depicted on the map you are investigating.

o Travel

- the knots in the left corner seemed in my play kinda not relevant - at speeds of 16 knots the ship seemed hardly to move while with 9 knots (and the same zoom level on the map) it seemed to fly.

- Even more so when you have a tiny / fast ship as your flagship (just test it for yourself)!

- Clouds are there for a reason You should use the winds of the clouds - darker clouds are more dangerous, but can give nice pushes across the map, if you know how to use them while sailing in a line from one point to another.

o Crew

- Always recruit crew numbers just in between
enough to have one ship in fighting condition
and enough to keep the rest of your fleet in minimum condition

- amount of gold you need to have (not to divide up!), to keep them from leaving:
1500 - 2000 per single crewmember! 2000+ to 3000+ (per single crewmember) just rises the modd (with a constant number of crew members)

- after a few warnings (about 2 or 3, depending on having a quartermaster I think) a part of your crew will leave with a random ship of yours.
And: Yes, including the cargo

- On apprentice-level you don't need to have equally big numbers of crew on your side to take on bigger ships!
you can overtake (just evade the cannon shoots) ships with far less crewmembers than the enemy ship has - just don't be too bad at fencing (which is way easier than dancing btw...)

o Trading / Goods

- trade is really just a side income! selling ships, big quests, e.g. are far more profitable for the time you have to invest for making all the distances!

- only luxury and spice goods seemed to have interesting enough profits to be relevant: gather them in harbours were they are cheap - and sell them altogether where you get good prices 3(0+ to 40+ Gold per ton)

o Fighting

! Try not to use cannons !
It's better to take over the boat and everything on it (Gold, goods, Information! and better constant crew members!) and sell the boat with no or minimal damages, than to sink the enemy boat AND to risk yourself getting shot at.
This way you don't even need the upgrades for the canons (only later on, when they are free and just raise the worth of your boat).

- Maneuver with a fast boat always in the blind side of the enemy ship (before and behind it - and of course never on their sides).
After a few tries / fights you will get a feeling for the dance with the enemy, because you will see how the enemy A.I will try to adapt to your maneuvering instead of shooting, so you can outdance the maneuvers of the enemy ship and their shots, until you reach them and finally enter them.

o Dancing

- far less complicated once you understand the meaning of the directions shown on the on-screen numpad:
lighting up = press (and keep pressed!)
flickering = release!

- I got my highest score (passionate kiss at the end) by not even listening to the sound / melody (which can be annoying after a bit of time).

Top five things you must know to play this game well?
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/915017-sid-meiers-pirates/71461462

Sid Meier's Pirates! PC

...

Paulo

1. I always sell-out on sword fighting skills and equipment (take skill at fencing and try to get balanced swords, silk shirts, pistols, etc). I always choose the rapier as well, because it is the fastest. Even if you are grossly outmanned in a fight, everything can be decided by a duel and if you can win that quickly, it doesn't really matter about anything else.

2. Having said that, don't enter a fight you can't win, or at least, even the odds as much as you can. Grape shot is an essential ship upgrade. Try to gat at least one full volley onto your opponent before you board them in a sea battle. It will level the odds by killing the crew, but without damaging the ship too much.

3. Choose the right ship. The big behemoths pack a punch, but aren't much use if you can never catch up to your quarry. I always prefer a Royal Sloop (or sloop of war). For me it has the best balance of speed, maneuverability and power, allowing me to evade fire with ease, lay a volley of grape shot on my foe and then board for the kill, which I can win because... well, see 1). Copper plating and cotton sails are useful here too.

4. Find the balance. Big crews are great for levelling towns and taking down large enemy ships, but are harder to keep in line. Having a massive fleet allows you to carry more cargo, but needs a bigger crew. I find that a crew of 150-200 or there abouts, plus a fleet of only two or three ships (a royal sloop for battles, a galleon for cargo and maybe a spare warship) has the optimal balance for my style of play.

5. Let your oponent make the first move in a duel. Watch his body language, evade it and then counter-attack. You'll be the quicker off the mark because... well, see 1) again.

I could probably go on with this.

Sid Meier's Pirates
Developer Diary: Tips and Tricks
Author: Sid Meier

https://www.gamesradar.com/au/cheats/5587/

Ahoy Mateys!

As you begin your daring quest to become the most famous pirate captain in history, I thought you could use some tips and tricks from this old sea dog. So, here are some top secret nuggets of gold to help you live the swashbuckling adventure of a lifetime:

-- Pick your starting skill wisely.

Many first-time players choose obvious skills like fencing or gunnery, both of which can be extremely helpful when you're first learning the game. However, once you've pillaged and plundered or charmed and duelled your way to a more advanced level, you may want to choose skills like medicine, which can help you live longer, or navigation, which increases your fleet speed, so you can get rich faster by say...finding the buried treasure first or defeating the enemy ships and confiscating their booty...are you with me??

-- Vary your shot types in ship battles.

Chain shot targets enemy sails and is more likely to immobilize an enemy vessel, making it easier to capture. Grape shot targets enemy crew and can improve your chances of defeating the enemy captain in a duel. But, be careful not to destroy an enemy ship during battles, because then you won't reap the rewards of a victory (like food, gold, extra crewmen etc.), instead you'll end up with a pirate hunter on your tail.

-- Hungry?

Have a warship! Learn to distinguish between merchant and military vessels. Merchant vessels are loaded with valuable cargo you can sell, and are not generally well-defended. Military vessels don't usually carry much loot or goods, but can be a lifesaver if your crew is starving, because they're always loaded to the gills with food.

-- Grab the floaties!

You can collect crewmen who've been thrown into the high seas by sailing over them in ship battles. And, you get small amounts of gold for collecting ejected cargo bobbing in the water.

-- Fear the fast flapping flag!

The faster a port's flag whips in the wind, the more aggressive they'll be towards you. Also, by observing how tattered a port's flag is, you can get a sense of the general prosperity level of that port.

-- "Count" your dough!

The rank of "Count" carries with it the benefit of free ship upgrades in your nationality's ports, and also allows you to sell any ship, no matter how damaged and battered, for full price! This is a great way to make lots of money on an enemy ship you've pounded into submission during a battle. Just tow it into port and sell it for top dollar!

-- Rubies are a girl's best friend!

Always buy ruby rings if they're offered to you, as they will help you to progress to the next stage of courtship with a governor's beautiful daughter. Once you've won over the daughter with your swashbuckling charm, she'll give you secret information and access to special items you wouldn't otherwise get.

-- In land battles, protect your officers!

They have the strongest attack rating and can overcome most enemy units one-on-one, but if surrounded, they can be worn down and routed easily.

-- Go Buccaneers!

Use your buccaneers to soften enemy units for attack, before engaging with your infantry. You'll get a morale bonus for attacking a weakened unit.

-- Don't forget to flank!

Attacking a unit from the side or behind gives a massive flanking bonus that can make all the difference.

-- Two left feet?

If you find that despite your best efforts, you just can't seem to get the hang of dancing, start off with the "Wit and Charm" skill, and get the dancing slippers as quickly as possible.

So there you have it my seafaring friends! Now set sail and have fun conquering the Carribean!!

Pirates express

Yaaarh captains !

If not made already, first try a blind play in apprentice, tutorial is clear and introduce most crucial concepts (crew, happiness, food, money, ships, dance, ...) rather well

Once you know all the basics, you got the "Sid meier's Pirates strategy guide" by Sashanan which is a great complete and detailed guide. My thoughts below are a mix between some info of this guide and extra tips I could think of (mainly Save / Load tricks)

1) Reminders

- Time (you getting older and slower at sword fighting especially) and crew happiness will be your main enemies, therefore you need to focus first on quest forcing you to have a sword battle

- Stopping at any port cost 1 week, make sure you've always got very precise and important objectives before entering any port (usually a promotion to get is the best timing)

- "Split the plunder" cost 7 months and let you keep only one ship if you continue the game after (usually raising difficulty), it resets crew happiness to max and brings some extra bonus if the split was interesting for previous crew (like bigger recruits pool in ports)

- Rogue is the original "hard" mode, the 5th difficulty is almost "sadistic" for top hardcore players

- When having a fleet, you get a speed malus for each ship in extra to your flagship but they all have the same base speed as the Flagship you currently use if they have no damage

- Attack from the east most of the time, avoid to be against the wind during a naval battle

- Never pay 1000 to traveler for info on your family, there are many free ways to get them

- Past 42 / 46 / 50 / 54 years old (depending of your items and starting bonus choice) you will be forced to end the game if you split the plunder, but you can play forever if you manage to reach around 2000/3000 gold per crew member, keeping them happy forever therefore not needing to split the plunder anymore. That's a reason to keep "lost cities" quests unsolved and famous pirates alive until you reach your last split, getting loads of cash quite easy then

2) Objectives

You got a bunch of objectives, and I strongly advise to focus on some of them as early as possible :

- The main quest Montalban (hardest sword fight of the game)

- The 4 lost family quest (takes time to catch again and again Raymondo + medium hard sword fight)

- The love story with a beautiful daughter (needs several weeks visiting many times the port where is the daughter + 2 medium hard sword fight, against the courtesan then Mendoza)

Ranks with nations should be second in priority choices, don't forget to check relations so you don't waste time attacking ships no longer at war against your current faction

Important : when attacking ships having an escort, you NEED to reach the protected ship before fighting the escort or the escort fight won't count for faction points.
Once you win over the protected ship, you go back to world map view and can choose if you want to attack the now alone escort or not (then it will count if you kill the escort)

When you reach max rank with one nation, switch to another immediately. If there is a big bounty on your head (sorry spain ^^) and you start to be bored to see lots of anti pirate ships appearing against you, best way to reset it is to go visit a mission, monk may offer to send a messenger to near town to ask an amnesty for you, you just need escort him, you can enter this city then and visit the governor (may still cost 1000 gold to validate the reset and some ports in areas you were super active may still remain hostile for some time before forgiving your past actions)

Last should be the pirates treasures, named pirates, lost cities and overall wealth as all these objectives can be reach without any sword fight (or with when fighting pirates but at least you have the choice to just sink them and it will count as victory) and will be a perfect early money boost once you reach the final level of difficulty you think you will continue and end this game

3) Best start implying LOTS of reloads :

- Choose apprentice

- Choose navigation (Swordfighting can be crucial in Rogue and above but will fade with time, medicine will delay time but same again will eventually fade in late game while Navigation remains useful until you stop playing ... and you can play forever if you want)

- Choose another country than spain which is the best target to attack in early game

- Check if your location is good enough (Curacao for dutch / Port Royal or east side for England / Floriday Keys or Tortuga for French) and make the 1st visit of the port

- Check if the mayor's daughter is beautiful

- Check if the shipmaker offers sails boost

- Check if the tavern traveler sells a treasure map piece you can buy (buy but don't do it until very late game, will cancel this choice for traveler future encounters as long as you don't achieve it)

- Recruit some extra crew then go attack some ships (treasure and payroll ships for money, immigrant and smugglers ships for specialists, escorts or new warship for better ship). Stay close to your main port and be busy.

Finding a cook (morale) and navigator are top priority

Every time you move out of port, as soon as you did enough for a promotion, go back to get it

- 2d visit check if the tavern traveler sells 3 stringged fiddle boosting morale
If you already got your new flag ship (Royal sloop, brig of war, frigate), upgrade sails

- 3d visit check if the tavern traveler sells concertina boosting morale, you must have find your new flag ship and the 2 specialists by then

- 4th visit check if the tavern traveler sells calfskin boots helping dance

- 5th visit check if the tavern traveler sells dancing slippers helping dance then go dance

You probably get info about your family and where is Raymondo, it is best to sort it as soon as you get the info (otherwise she may repeat you again the same info next time you visit her)

- 6th visit check if the tavern traveler sells you the ruby ring then go offer the ruby ring. You probably get gift to choose from, always take fight related items in priority (swords, protection, shirt, pistols)

It may be a great idea to have a second city to start another romance for extra Family info (remember to get an extra ruby ring) also to sell goods as you may have much more than your first city can buy back

- 7th visit check if the tavern traveler offers the medicinal herbs boosting health, visit twice the governor to heard about jealous fiancée then fight him immediately (no need to sail away and waste another week visiting again)
- 8th visit check if the tavern traveler offers the incan mystic salve boosting health and go dance

Now you should be duke with this nation, have saved 2 relatives, beaten Montalban and your darling will be kidnapped next time you visit this city, keep that in mind depending of your plans

Make a special save as you have now the best start possible, from there you can enjoy as many different relax game you may want having sorted (within 12 months usually) all these tasks and obtained these crucial ranks / items / specialists / new Flag ship with still a happy crew

I usually switch towards France or England to finish the 2 family members quest starting new romance with another beautiful daughter and repeat almost same process as before but finishing the family quests, going up to marriage with one of the 2 beautiful women and eventually splitting the loot to raise difficulty level.
This can be a good time for a second main save, having totally sorted all the aspects that could have become impossible later on due to sword fight speed issues and aiming to increase difficulty to your "final level" before completing all the remaining quests, using this intermediate time mainly to finish getting max rank with each countries

4) The save and reload tricks :

This is what may change when you reload :

- Items sold by tavern traveler (focus morale boost, dance boost, health boost and ruby items, avoid fight related items, location items, vision items and weather items as they can be provided by daughters. All other items traveler sells are optional for stylish hats, disguise, rescue or freedom items and purely decorative for mission faith and indian items)

- The annoying guard in tavern or not

- Info revealed (waitress, tavern keeper, love lady, family members, Raymondo or Montoban)

- All maps produced (for the first bit, once the first is revealed, it stays the same for the other bits)

- Dance choice

- Dance rewards, usually as follow : Rather plain daughter : criminal info for good dance, item reward for perfect. Attractive daughter : Item reward for good dance, Raymondo info for perfect. Beautiful daughter : Raymondo info for good dance, Lost city info for perfect

- Ships that ports produce (ships already on sea remains the same and where they are though. Also when you enter a city, even when splitting and waiting 7 months, you will find again the same ship at the same place than 7 months before)

- Content of a ship (specialist can change too)

- Crew surrending or joining

- Difficulty level of sword opponent for naval battles or fort battles (not named enemies)

- Army type (for you too depending placement) when attacking a city

Here are the main use I did find especially strong :

- To get the 6/7 most urgent items to possess

- To get my 2 ship specialists and optimize early ship looting (save when you exit a city, then check all ships on sea in the 2/3 main directions, find the busiest area then reload several times until there are also lots of new spawning that interest you in the same area)

- To make sure you got enough but not more to get a promotion (if you get free lands in addition to your promotion, it means you did waste time on extra ships, reload and try kill one less ship before coming back and check if it is enough)
- To cancel a pre-battle positioning mistake having you enter a port as it cost 1 week

- To find anything from a map with only a fragment of it (as it is fixed once first fragment is obtained, just save then, continue the game, find all fragments, find where it is exactly then reload just after the first fragment and go get the prize avoiding wasting time)

- To get maps location close to you or info close to you that really works (do you find Raymondo / Mendoza / Montoban where they are supposed to be or it is already too late)

- To try again this grblbl dancing part which becomes madness with beautiful daughters on rogue

I hope this may help some of you to either grasp some mechanics which are not always obvious and some tricks you could use (or not)

Fair seas

Captain Jack

Sid Meier's Pirates! IGN
http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=1574.10;wap2

(Page 3/9)

(No Post Date listed, appears to be around 2004)

SirBruce:

Okay, a few things I've found so far just getting started in the game:

1. There's a problem with ATI Radeon drivers that make the cinematics flicker. The solution, according to the readme file, is to set your ATI settings all the way to the "Performance" level (rather than "Quality" where I usually keep mine). Of course, this changes a bunch of settings, not all for the better. It turns out all you need to do is set Anti-Aliasing and Antisotropic Filtering to "Let Application Decide".

2. The manual says you can adjust all the graphics settings through the in-game sliders, but that's incorrect. The in-game sliders, even at maximum setting, do not enable maximum graphic detail. To do that, you need to edit the Config.ini file to:

WaterDetail = 4
WorldDetail = 6
ObjectDetail = 3

3. When you first play the game, you aren't allowed to select your diffculty level or play or the character's specialty (defaults to Fencing). Once you have gone through that sequence and started playing a real game, the next new game you start will allow you to select those settings when you enter your character's name. Note that if the new Priates! plays anything like the original, then you really want to pick Medicine as your skill in order to have a long enough career to obtain the highest scores. Of course, if you find yourself totally sucking at Fencing or Dancing, you might have no choice.

Bruce

SirBruce:
Okay, so now I've actually played it tonight...

It's a lot of fun. It's pretty much the same as the previous Pirates!, but with just enough changes to make it interesting. With such a free-form style of gameplay, you really have a lot of options as to how to play the game.

Swordfighting is extremely easy on the lower difficulties. It's not that you can't lose, but chances are you'll win just by keymashing. This is good, as it saves you from having to reload all the time whenever you lose a swordfight. Because of this, looting ships is pretty easy. However, if you raid a couple of ships near a town, they'll send a pirate hunter after you, and other ships will steer clear. Very cool. Keeps you from "camping" a town all the time. Smile

They've eliminated the swordfighting your way into town bit, so now to plunder towns you actually need lots of men, which takes time to do. The new land battle engine is much appreciated, and actually allows you to use some strategy to overcome superior numbers. However, with semi-randomized terrain and placement, sometimes you aren't in a good position to win.

The new treasure hunting/landmark system when you're on land is a great idea, but it seems hampered by the rather restrictive view you have of the surrounding area. They do give you a spyglass, but it's quite unwieldly to use.

The new dancing minigame, which you must master in order to get the cute Governor's daughters, are a BITCH. You're tempted to look at the dancers for your cues - don't. Watch the little interface and it will flash to tell you what key to hit. You have to hit the key very quickly for you to hit your mark. Many songs then repeat the sequence along with the melody, which allows you to know what key to hit next before it lights up so you get a flourish for extra points. (Supposedly, you're hitting the key on the beat, but they seem out-of-sync to me.) However, guessing what the next repeating sequence is going to be is pretty much impossible, so there's little use in trying.

All in all, I'm definitely going to be killing many hours with the new Pirates! What remains to be seen is how long before it gets too boring. There are many other minor additions like missions and special items and so on which I haven't mentioned that really make the game different from the original, but the underlying gameplay remains the same. If I have one real complaint, it's that I think the sailing interface (both out in the ocean and during combat) is about 50% too fast. I wish there was a slider so I could slow it down. Once I got used to it, it's not TOO bad, but I still feel rushed.

Bruce

here are several locations I believe I have ALWAYS seen named pirates stationed, they are:

Due east of Margarita on the Northeast Coast of South America
South of St. Augustine on the Eastern Coast of Florida
The north coast of the Yucatan Pennisula
Northeast of Grand Granada on the North Coast of Honduras
The East Coast of the Yucatan Peninsula and Belieze.
I'm sure you guys can think of some other "Always" locations.

Worlds End will always have a named pirate but not always the same one. Usually its Henry Morgan or Blackbeard but I've had Roc on a few occaisions and even Bad Bart. Certain named pirate havens will always have named pirates.

Sid Meier's Pirates! mistakes
https://www.moviemistakes.com/main7234

Continuity mistake:

When you are romancing a governor's daughter, and the city she lives in is captured by another nation, a new governor with his daughter is installed. This new girl looks completely different from your old romance (and her father is a completely different person), but she nonetheless remembers you. You are still at the same stage in your relationship, even if the girl has never met you before. You can even (for instance) rescue a blonde Dutch woman from her captors, and end up returning with a black-haired Spanish girl.

EDIT:
Patch 1.02 [FIX] - Daughter reset if AI takes over town

Bug:

When walking on land, if there are no game objectives (buried treasure, lost relatives, Indian cities) nearby, you can pass through solid objects such as cabins, totems and stone heads. These are only solid when they are to be used as landmarks to find the hidden objectives.

Other mistake:

When fighting Baron or Colonel Mendoza in ship-to-ship combat, they occasionally surrender, if you damage their ship enough. Nonetheless, you still have to fight the duel on deck with them, and your men are fighting it out off-screen despite the Spaniards having surrendered just seconds earlier.

Trivia:

Artillery is listed in the Pirate-o-pedia as the most powerful resistance you can meet when attacking a city. But you will never encounter artillery in-game, since it was taken out in the final stages of game development.

Regarding the last sentence, I think this bug was patched by making any city with a missing daughter immune from capture until she is returned.

Automate Dancing + All cheats!
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2799882699

By JC Denton

This guide will tell you how to actually use "Phalzyr's SMP Trainer Version 3.20" to automate the much hated dancing mini-game along with using the many other cheats that come with this trainer. (For the steam version of the game with windows 10).

Intro + Warning

The trainer wasn't working for me and I really wanted to skip dancing (or at least automate it as this trainer does) so here is how to really make it work with the steam version of the game on windows 10:

Just as a word of warning: I didn't make this trainer or host it so do your due-diligence like using any third party software. I scanned it with Bitdefender anti-virus software after downloading it, installing it and I scanned the game and trainer again after using it.

TLDR Instructions

1) Download "Phalzyr's SMP Trainer Version 3.20"
2) Extract it anywhere
3) Run the Trainer as admin
4) Launch the game
5) Start new game or load a game. Alt+Tab and make sure the Trainer's "Personal Status" tab has info filled in (with the amount of crew, gold and food you have).
***If not, change "SMP Version" to BigPond/Trymedia". YES, EVEN IF YOU'RE USING THE PAID, STEAM VERSION***
6) If step 5 doesn't work (and you closed/re-opened both) Trainer->"SMP Version" -> "Set Offset" and follow the instructions.
Close / reopen both the trainer and the game again.
7) Changing the "Gold" field and clicking lock should change your gold immediately. This is how you can test it worked.

Instructions
1) Download "Phalzyr's SMP Trainer Version 3.20". (I got mine from "lonebullet" here: https://www.lonebullet.com/tools/download-sid-meiers-pirates-phtrainer-v320-free-295.htm)

2) Extract the folder anywhere (I put the CONTENTS of the folder in the same folder as the "Pirates!.exe" so that "PHTrainer.exe" is in the same folder as "Pirates!.exe". e.g. D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Pirates!)

3) Right-click the "PHTrainer.exe" -> Properties -> Compatibility tab -> tick "Run this program as an administrator" (I DON'T use compatibility modes e.g. vista, 7, XP etc.)

4) Run the trainer (PHTrainer.exe). If it doesn't launch the game, then you might want to follow step N below. Start the game (If this guide doesn't work try starting after the game instead).

5) Start new game or load a game. Alt+Tab and make sure the Trainer's "Personal Status" tab has info filled in (with the amount of crew, gold and food you have). If not, change "SMP Version" to BigPond/Trymedia" (Yes! even though this is the steam version!!! If this doesn't work for you, you can also try the steam version but "BigPond/Trymedia" is what finally worked for me).

6) If "Personal Status" tab still doesn't fill with the currently loaded/started game's info (with the amount of crew, gold and food you have), then click "SMP Version" -> "Reset Offset" or click "SMP Version" -> "Set Offset" and follow the instructions to find the gold's Hex and set it like that.

Close both the trainer and the game and then once again launch the trainer then the game again whenever you change version with "SMP Version" or "Reset/Set Offset".

7) to ensure it worked, try change your gold to a random number in the trainer's "Personal Status" tab and click "Lock". The game should update the gold number IMMEDIATELY when you alt+tab back into the game. Even if the game is paused. You should also be hearing sounds from clicking the "Lock" and "Unlock" button next to the "Gold" field.

N) OPTIONAL (to launch the game automatically after launching the trainer): Find your "Steam.dll" in your steam folder (where your steam.exe is) and put it in the same folder as your "Pirates!.exe".

Outro
Please rate this guide if it helps.

I didn't find these instructions easily and didn't know how to easily check if it was working or not like in step 7 so I thought I'd write this guide.
I now use the trainer to skip dancing by going into the trainer's "Options" tab and ticking "Auto Dance" and "Always Graceful" and just let the dancing play by itself ... It was just so repetitive, difficult, long and had terrible feedback on whether you timed it too fast or slow to get the perfect timing (twirl move).

Now, enjoy this great game as you like playing it!

Kupo 13 Aug @ 3:21am
If you can't get it to work, just turn on your CAPS lock.

During the dance, hit 'P' to pause the game.

Abuse pausing to watch for and input the dance moves at whatever pace you want/need.

You can also abuse pausing during sword fights and any other aspect of the game.

JC Denton [author] 23 May @ 7:17am
(If "BigPond/Trymedia" doesn't work, try step 6 and read the longer instructions)

JC Denton [author] 23 May @ 7:16am
Hmm sounds like what happened to me when I didn't do step 5.
Did you use "BigPond/Trymedia" like in step 5? You have to use it despite using the steam version of the game.
- Are you using the steam version of the game?
- Are you using windows 10 or something else?

unknown_swampert 21 May @ 3:04pm
When I had the window for the smp trainer open, and started a new game for pirates, when I skipped the mutiny cut scene, all it did was close the window.
