Kings and Generals

The Battle of Manzikert (Malazgirt, Manavazkert) of 1071 was fought between the Byzantine Empire and the new nomadic conquerors from Central Asia - the Seljuk Sultanate. This battle was decisive in changing the ethnic and the religious outlook of Anatolia, and probably was the reason Crusades from Western Europe began.

The Fourth Crusade and the Sack of Constantinople in 1204. Although the First Crusade was succeeded in taking Jerusalem and a number of Frankish kingdoms were created in the Levant, by 1187 the Ayyubid leader Saladin managed to reconquer most of the region. The Third Crusade launched by the English king Richard I Lionheart, French king Philip II Augustus and German emperor Frederick I Barbarossa wasn't able to take Jerusalem, so the pope called for the Fourth Crusade led by Enrico Dandolo, Boniface of Montferrat and Baldwin of Flanders, which indeed ended up in one of the biggest tragedies for the Christian world.

Kings and Generals

The defeat at Ankara in 1402 was the first real setback for the Ottoman empire. Its sultan - Bayezid became a hostage of the new conqueror Timur, and soon sons of the sultan started fighting each other in order to get to the throne. This period is called Ottoman Interregnum, but it was basically a Civil War between 6 princes. Eventually, this civil war came to an end, and as the agressive invasion of the South and Central Europe continued, Hungary, Poland, Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Transylvania, Lithuania, Wallachia, Bohemia, Ruthenia and others started a crusade called the Crusade of Varna against the Ottoman sultan Murad II. The crusade was concluded in 1444 with the battle of Varna between Murad II on one side, king of Poland and Hungary Wladyslaw III and voivode of Transylvania John Hunyadi on the other.

The Eastern Roman Empire was under constant Ottoman pressure ever since the new conquerors appeared in the Anatolia. Although the Ottomans tried to take Constantinople on a number of occasions, they had to lift the siege of the city due to the Crusades of Varna and Nicopolis, the Timurid Invasion and the battle of Ankara, and the Interregnum period that happened after their Sultan Bayezid was taken hostage by Timur. However, after the victories at the battles of Varna (1444) and 2nd Kosovo (1448) against the crusaders of Wladyslaw III and John Hunyadi, the road to Constantinople was open and the new sultan Mehmed II set his sight on the city of the Roman emperors...

Alternate History

What if the Byzantine Empire Survived?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9psC8ae18lw

AlternateHistoryHub

The Eastern Romans survived for a millennia after the fall of the West before their own demise from the Ottomans. The sack of Constantinople is often thought as the end of the Medieval Age and the start of another. Politics of the past forgotten. So what if in an alternate timeline this never happened? What if the Byzantine Empire actually survived, and continued on? Here is one scenario.

Discuss the long term issues that were plaguing the Eastern Roman Empire in the run up to the Foruth Crusade. Many of these issues occurred during or because of the Komnenian era but were managable and reversible by the death of Manuel I Komnenos. However, the combination of these problems and the incompetence of the emperor's that followed Manuel I brought their empire to ruin.

This video should gives an overview of the dire situation the empire was in before the fourth crusade ever arrived in Constantinople.
The Eastern Roman Empire was in a state of unrelenting decline and was breaking apart by the time the Fourth Crusade arrived at Constantinople in 1203. Foreign conquest and break away states were often a result of the total failure of the imperial government to deal with the issues the provinces had, be they abuses by local magnates or foreign incursions. Many local magnets started to rule in their own right to deal with the issues that the Angeloi dynasty did not.

The Fall of Constantinople: The Great Siege of 1453 | Documentary
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObsR8-Z7v-s

WarsofTheWorld

Constantinople. The City of the World’s Desire. The largest city in Christendom for nearly a thousand years. Surprisingly few remember this grand city, capital of two of history’s greatest empires: the Christian Roman Empire, and the Islamic Ottoman Empire.

This is the story of Constantinople’s fall, how Europe’s richest city fell to the Turks and became known as Istanbul: the story of the Great Siege of 1453.
When histories greatest fortification was stormed, and Europe’s largest cathedral was transformed into a mosque, the Empire formed by Romulus and Remus on the seven hills had finally come to an end. Europe shuddered. It had done nothing to help the ancient city. Now, it would suffer a renewed Islamic onslaught, not seen since the days of the great caliphs. The shockwaves caused by the fall of the city of Constantinople would echo through history, changing world history forever.

The Fall of Byzantium - Documentary
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AEOWa5__70

Fire of Learning

In this video, we discuss the fall of the Byzantine Empire, and the fall of the Roman Empire as a whole.

2 points about Constantine XI Palaiologos (Rome's/Byzantium's last Emperor):

1. Did he actually die in battle? Probably, yes. According to two primary sources (Michael Kritobulus and Georgios Sphrantzes in particular), he resisted offers to surrender, saying that he and his men had chosen to die of their own free will, and was last seen tearing off his imperial regalia right before the end, so as to look like a common soldier. It's possible that he committed suicide or fled, but the fact that the Turks were unable to find his body, and that he was never heard from again, to me suggests that the greatest likelihood is that he fell in battle dressed as a common soldier much as the sources say. This would be a natural assumption even if the sources didn't claim it because the body was never found.

2. Did he actually give the speech often attributed to him? Very likely not. In fact, the speech is said to have been written down by Sphranztes later on, but even that is not exactly true. Another important primary source was an Italian Bishop present in the city at the time, Leonard of Chios, who may (probably) have exaggerated and embellished some things. Long story short, Constantine XI may have given a speech before the city fell. If so, he would've probably talked about the things I said in the video he did, but it's impossible to say for sure. I doubt, that in a chaotic, stressful, and terrifying situation, it would've been so well composed, and I doubt even more that someone would be meticulously writing it down verbatim, but it may be along the lines of things he actually said. They likely took the truth about what happened to their graves. Still important, and fun, to speculate, though.

Constantinople was the last stronghold of the Roman Empire. When it fell, it became the new capital of the Ottoman Empire: Istanbul. Throughout the years, it has become quite a tourist attraction. Even today, it’s a bridge between the East and the West. Literally. Separated by the Bosporus Strait, you can eat lunch in Asia while looking over the water into Europe.

Captain Kurt takes us on a tour of this historical city in “Worldview w/ Captain Kurt.”

How did the Ottomans overcome an internal crisis? History of the Ottoman Empire (1400 - 1500)

The start of the 15th century in the Ottoman Empire marked the final years of Bayezid I’s reign as Sultan.
In 1400, major tensions began to rise between the Ottoman leader and a Turko-Mongol warlord by the name of Timur. This once cold-war reached a heated climax in 1402 at the Battle of Ankara.

While on his way back through Anatolia to confront the threat of his powerful rival, Bayezid was caught off guard by Timur and his troops as they besieged the city of Ankara, withholding the only source of water for the Ottoman troops and forcing them to engage in battle.
By the end of the conflict, Timur’s army prevailed while Bayezid and his sons attempted to make an escape.

Rome. The state that turned from tiny settlements around the Palatine Hill in central Italy into a gigantic empire that ruled most of western europe and mediteranean for centuries and formed the framework for todays states.
Let us get into the journey from Augustus, the first emperor of Rome, to the last one of the Byzantine Empire. Passing great and bad emperors, golden and tourboulente ages.

The map shows the territory controlled by the ruler at the end of his reign.

Sometimes two or more emperors ruled together, which is marked with a white line between their names.

Giovanni Giustiniani
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giovanni_Giustiniani

Giovanni Giustiniani (1418 – 1 June 1453) was a Genoese captain, a member of one of the greatest families of the Republic of Genoa, a kinsman to the powerful house of Doria in Genoa, and protostrator of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire.

He led 700 professional soldiers, both Genoese and Greeks from the island of Chios, which at the time was part of the Republic of Genoa, to the defense of Constantinople against the Ottoman army of Sultan Mehmed II in 1453. He personally financed, organized and led this expedition on his own initiative, and upon arriving was placed in command of the land defenses by Emperor Constantine XI Palaiologos of the Byzantine Empire.

Giustiniani was key in controlling the land forces and keeping the Greeks, Genoese and Venetians from quarrelling with each other, and instead kept focused on repairing the land walls after the Ottoman cannons had shot holes in them. It was at least partly because of Giustiniani's charisma that the Byzantine forces were able to hold out so long against overwhelming odds.

On 29 May 1453, during the final attack by Mehmed II, Giustiniani was wounded by an Ottoman cannon while defending the walls of Constantinople.
Some sources say the wound was caused by a crossbow bolt. Sources disagree about whether the wound was to his arm, leg, or chest, but it forced him to withdraw from his station at the land wall. He exited through the locked gate into the city, which opened up the opportunity for the fearful to flee, and panic spread throughout the lines.

Seeing the loss of morale caused among the defenders by Giustiniani's retreat, Mehmed II ordered a renewed assault that eventually overwhelmed the Byzantine defenses and Constantinople was taken by the Turks.
Although Giustiniani's men managed to escape with their general after its fall, Giustiniani died from his wounds on 1 June 1453.

Rome Didn't Fall When You Think It Did.
Here's Why That Fabricated History Still Matters Today

https://time.com/6101964/fabricated-fall-rome-lessons-history/

Rome Didn't Fall in 476
relations with the Eastern Roman Empire in Constantinople had deteriorated

In 535, Eastern Roman armies attacked Italy.
The Eastern Roman Empire recovered Italy—and destroyed much of it in the process.

The Western Roman Empire had clearly fallen by the 560s.

The fall of Rome in 476 is a manufactured historical turning point that has become an accepted historical fact.
