Units of History - The Varangian Guard DOCUMENTARY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0H2Gs87dTfU

20 Nov 2021

In this animated history documentary we explore one the most famous units of history: the Varangian Guard. The video begins with a brief history on the Rise of the Byzantine Empire which followed the fall of Rome. We focus specifically on the dynamics of the eastern Roman Empire which interacted quite heavily with the lands of Scandinavia and the Kievan Rus by way of the river routes which linked the Baltic Sea with the Black Sea. The documentary discusses the history of the Byzantine conflicts with the Kievan Rus which gave rise to the eventual mercenary service of Varangians in the Byzantine army.

We then lay the ground work for this discussion by looking at the organization of the Byzantine Army and its mercenary corps known as the "Hetairai". Starting around the end of the 9th century, the first warbands of Varangians would make their way into its ranks. However it would be in 989 AD when they came in full force, 6,000 Varangians sailing south to assist Emperor Basil II.

We discuss how future Varangians would make their way into Byzantine Service and the sorts of ways they would be used by the Emperors. This covers both civil and military service. Next we cover what the equipment of the Varangian Guard as well as the tactics of the Varangians in battle. Finally we conclude with a service history of the Varangian Guard over the Rise and fall of the Byzantine Empire. They fought many foes such as the Seljuks, the Bulgars, the Normans, the Pechenegs, and more. This includes key battles such as the Battle of Manzikert and the Siege of Constantinople during the 4th Crusade.

The entire history of the Ottoman Empire (All Parts) - 1299 - 1922

The Ottoman Empire was founded circa 1299 by Osman I in northwestern Asia Minor, south of the Byzantine capital Constantinople. The Ottomans crossed into Europe in 1352, moving their capital to Adrianople in 1369. They expanded in Asia Minor by annexing many small Turkic beylics.

They conquered Constantinople in 1453, and then expanded deep into Europe, northern Africa, and the Middle East. The Ottoman territory increased exponentially under Sultan Selim I, who assumed the Caliphate in 1517 as the Ottomans defeated the Mamluks of Egypt and annexed western Arabia, Egypt, Mesopotamia, and the Levant. Within the next few decades, much of the North African coast became part of the Ottoman realm. Slowly after many wars and internal problems, the Ottoman sultanate started to crumble. See the entire story in this video!

Fall of Civilizations is a very interesting series. I've listened to a few episodes on the ancient Middle East, which inspired my recent quiz question on Mesopotamian civilizations.

The Life & Times of Belisarius (History Abridged)

After the end of the Western Roman Empire, the story in the East is more or less a thousand years of “Well they tried their best but the climate screwed them, people kept dying of plague, every single one of their neighbors made a national pastime of sacking the empire, and they couldn’t go more than 5 years without a civil war so… A for effort.”

and then here you’ve got Belisarius who gets hit with practically all of that at once and comes out the other end with an extra quarter of the Mediterranean… and without screwing everything up in a coup!

Lepanto 1571: Shattering the Idea of Ottoman Invincibility

The battle of Lepanto 1571 was one of the greatest naval battles of the Mediterranean and the last one to be fought almost exclusively by rowing vessels.

According to maritime historian Lawrence Mott a staggering amount of 70 to 90 percent of all war galleys in the basin participated in the fighting.

Lepanto was in some sense the naval counterpart of the 1683 siege of Vienna.

Contemporaries and historians long saw it as a climactic battle between east and west and mythologized it as the battle in which a Christian fleet defeated the seemingly unstoppable Ottoman threat from the east.

In this video were going to look at what exactly happened in the gulf of Patras and look critically at the impact the battle really had.

On Easter Monday in 1453, an Ottoman army led by the young and ambitious Sultan Mehmed II arrived at the gates of the Byzantine capital Constantinople.

This marked the beginning of a siege characterized by the determination of leaders, a city with extraordinary fortifications, and the most extensive siege artillery the world had seen to this day.

The fall of Constantinople was a true watershed in history. It cemented the position of the Ottoman empire as the major power in the Balkans and the eastern Mediterranean and it ended the long chapter of Roman history for good.

The Roman Empire had in some ways outlasted the so-called fall of Rome in 476AD almost for a thousand years as it continued to exist as what we nowadays call the Byzantine Empire.

Up to this day thousands of pages have been written on the fall, or conquest, of Constantinople, and barely any other siege in history has received more attention by scholars and history buffs alike.

In this video we tell the story of the staggering siege of Constantinople by weaving together the insights of the most recent scholarly literature. This required – given the many controversies about this siege - quite a lot of reading.

On September 25, 1529, for the first time, an Ottoman army arrived at the Austrian capital of Vienna.

Their arrival marked the beginning of a siege characterized by subterranean warfare, nasty weather, and serious supply problems.

The siege of Vienna was rather short, but it was without doubt an event of pan-European importance.
It ended the perceived invincibility that had surrounded the Ottoman army just when it had come closer to central Europe than ever before.

For centuries this event had extraordinary symbolic power, but it is now overshadowed by the second Ottoman siege in 1683.

In this video we present the story of the first Ottoman siege of Vienna which was no less staggering than the second one.

On the 14th July 1683, an Ottoman army under the command of the Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa Pasha arrived at the Gates of Vienna.

Their arrival marked the beginning of a siege characterized by subterranean warfare, delays on both sides, and an “apocalyptic storm” of Tatar riders ravaging the hinterland.

The siege was eventually ended by the battle of Vienna, when the Polish winged Hussars arrived under King Jan III Sobieski famously charged into the Ottoman army.

The siege and battle of Vienna are discussed extensively by historians up to this day.

It is considered the turning point in the westward expansion of the Ottomans and it is an interesting case study for any student of warfare.

This is how contemporary historiography tells the story of the staggering siege of Vienna

On the anniversary of this victory, the Catholic Church still celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. As the battle was being fought in 1571, Pope Pius V ordered all the people of Rome to pray the Rosary for victory. He instituted the feast, originally called Our Lady of Victory, to commemorate the outcome of the battle.
