He was born Rodrigo (or Ruy) Díaz de Vivar. Vivar being the town where he was born. It is near Burgos. He was born either in 1040 or 1043. Historians are not sure of the date. He died in Valencia in 1099. His name, "El Cid" was given to him by the Moors. In the mixture of the Spanish and Arabic language they used, they called him "As-Sid" (Lord or Chief). This was pronounced by the Spaniards as "El Cid", but they themselves actually called him "Campeador" (Champion)

El Cid ending, one of the best parts of this epic road show picture. El Cid taking a arrow to the heart in a previous battle, demands that he rides out the next day despite his fatal injury. Thus restoring the morale of his men and then to charge on to victory. And thus the cid, road out of the gates of history, into legend.

the oldest preserved Castilian epic poem, it tells of the Castilian hero El Cid, and considered a national epic of Spain.

Who was the greatest warrior knight in medieval or crusader history?

https://www.quora.com/Who-was-the-greatest-warrior-knight-in-medieval-or-crusader-history

See Thread Link for further Info.
This is a summary only of the Thread with wikipedia Links

There are several possible contenders.
The most obvious choice is William Marshall, but since he's already been mentioned,
here are a few others:

Godfrey of Bouillon
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godfrey_of_Bouillon

Jean Boucicaut
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_II_Le_Maingre

Olivier de Clisson
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olivier_de_Clisson

Count Alan Rufus of the sovereign house of Brittany
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Rufus

The greatest general of the era was undoubtedly Subutai the Mongol.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subutai

I can’t do better than the Wikipedia summary, so here it is:

He directed more than twenty campaigns in which he conquered thirty-two nations and won sixty-five pitched battles,
during which he conquered or overran more territory than any other commander in history.

Saladin
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saladin

If we’re willing to use the term “knight” somewhat broadly, as the medieval folks did themselves (Hector was a knight, Julius Caesar was a knight, etc.) than I think Saladin would be in contention. An indisputably great warrior and general, he was also about as chivalrous as any person in the era. Indeed, if you were a Greek Orthodox Christian, you’d probably prefer that Saladin take over your city than a Frankish knight.

Richard the Lionheart, who was not considered to be a slouch in the knight department, had a borderline man-crush on the guy. Richard at one point tried to marry his sister to Saladin’s brother. They liked each other.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_I_of_England

Robert de Hauteville (also known as Robert Guiscard) “The Fox”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Guiscard

Geoffroi de Charny.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geoffroi_de_Charny

His great rival, Edward of Woodstock (the Black Prince) was his opposite, but is nonetheless worthy of consideration as a great Warrior Knight.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_the_Black_Prince

Otherwise I agree with the answers regarding Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar (El Cid). I do not find the contemporary sources about his life 100% reliable. However if popular history is to be believed (and I would like to do so in his case), he was a definitive Knight, a paragon in chivalry and warfare.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Cid

Maybe William Marshal

William Marshal , The Greatest Knight
https://www.historytoday.com/archive/william-marshal-greatest-knight#sthash.qfcE6F1V.dpuf

Zawisza Czarny, Polish knight
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zawisza_Czarny

As many contributors have pointed out, William Marshall stands out head and shoulders in the 12th/13th centuries. He was widely known by his contemporaries (all over Europe) as the best knight in Christendom.

Moving ahead to the 14th century, I would pick Bertrand du Guesclin, who helped to kick off the process of kicking the English out of France.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bertrand_du_Guesclin

And here’s an unlikely choice: Sir John Fastolfe (who Shakespeare parodied as Sir John Falstaff in Henry IV part 2, Henry V and The Merry Wives of Windsor)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Fastolf

Milos Obilic, Serbian knight
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milo%C5%A1_Obili%C4%87

How far back does medieval go ?
How about Belisarius, Justinian’s general, who stopped the Persians, destroyed the Vandals in North Africa and led the reconquest of Italy, including the defense of Rome, until he was relieved and Narses sent. Or how about Heraclius, who led the army and navy from Carthage to Constantinople and overthrew the usurper , and the led the real first crusade and hammered the Persian empire to bits ?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belisarius
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heraclius

My choice would be King Robert I of Scotland aka Robert the Bruce.
El Cid.
the Black Douglas

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_the_Bruce
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Cid
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Douglas,_Lord_of_Douglas

John of Bohemia would have to be a contender.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_of_Bohemia

He's pretty late, but the Poland-Lithuania King John III Sobieski. He defeated the Turks at the 1683 Battle of Vienna, largely ending the Ottoman threat to Europe.

Top 10 Medieval Knights

https://www.medievalchronicles.com/medieval-knights/top-10-medieval-knights/

See link for further Info

In the history of Europe, the medieval era also known as the middle ages lasted from the 5th to 15th century. It commenced with the fall of the Western Roman Empire and finally ended with the beginning of the Renaissance period.

The medieval ages were considered to be one of the most transformative and unstable periods in history. During this period, there was a lack of cultural and scientific development and feudalism was the presiding political system.

the soldiers were of three main types: foot soldiers, archers, and knights. The knights were typically heavily armored and rode on horseback. Being a knight was not an easy job and only the affluent nobles could afford the weapons, expensive armor, and a war horse.

In the feudal system, knights were observed to be very important and were highly regarded in medieval society. Knights fought in the wars and earned glory, prestige, court positions and wealth.

Following are 10 of the most famous medieval knights.

King Arthur (king of Camelot)
Richard the Lionheart
Joan of arc (maid of Orleans)
Alexander Nevsky (Prince of Novgorod)
William Wallace (Guardian of Scotland - Braveheart)
Edward of Woodstock (Black Prince)
Sir William Marshall
John Hawkwood
Bertrand du Guesclin
El Cid

Knighthood was one of the central themes of a medieval life. Although its variation existed in the early medieval and even ancient times, it became widespread and popular during the middle and late medieval times. It was during this time that various orders of the knights took birth in order to liberate the holy land of Jerusalem from the Muslims. During these wars and over the subsequent centuries, many famous medieval knights left their mark on history.

History of Famous Medieval Knights

The history of knighthood can be traced back to the Roman times where the class of the knights was called “Ordo Equestris” which is English means “order of mounted nobles”. However, unlike the famous medieval knights, names of ancient Roman knights have not survived history. During the early medieval times, some form of knighthood existed among the Ostrogoths and Franks. However, it was during the middle and late medieval times when the knighthood became widespread and it was during this era that the names of many famous medieval knights emerged.

King Arthur Famous Medieval Knight
King Arthur was the legendary Famous Medieval Knight from early medieval times

Early Medieval Times – Famous Medieval Knights

During the early medieval times, the Franks attacked wide tracts of territory in Europe and made impressive conquests. It was the Franks who gave rise to the idea of a knight mounted on a horse and the idea continued to be refined over the subsequent centuries. Among the famous medieval knights of early medieval times, we can include El Cid who was a Castilian knight. His real name was Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar and he spent his life fighting against the Moors, who gave him the name of El Cid.

Late Medieval Times – Famous Medieval Knights

During the middle and late medieval times, Christian West came in contact with the Muslim East through the Crusades.
https://www.medievalchronicles.com/the-crusades/

It was during this time that various popular knight orders including Knights Templar, Knights Teutonic, and others were formed and many famous medieval knights left their mark on the collective memory of Europe. Among the most famous medieval knights from the middle and late medieval times, we can name Alexander Nevsky who was the prince of Novgorod, Richard the Lionheart of England who led the Third Crusade, and others.

Famous Medieval Knights – Warriors

Among the most famous medieval knights, various were warriors which meant that they had spent most of their life either on the battle field or in skirmishes against the enemies. These warrior knights were different from the knights who hailed from nobility and did not regularly participate in the wars. Among these famous warrior knights of the medieval times, we can include William Marshal, Godfrey of Bouillon, and Jean Boucicaut etc.

Richard the LionHeart - Famous Medieval Knight
Richard the Lion-Heart was one of the most famous medieval Knights of medieval times

Most Famous Knight of Medieval Times

One of the most famous medieval knights was King Arthur of England who, however, is considered to be more of a mythological personality, considering the countless legends surrounding him. Edward the Black Prince is also one of the most famous medieval knights. He was the Prince of Wales and was called Black Prince because of the black armour that he wore during battles.

Summary of Medieval Knights

Knighthood has its roots in the ancient world when order of knights existed in Rome. However, the phenomenon of knighthood itself became common during the middle and late medieval times, particularly after the Crusades. It was after this time that many devastating battles were fought throughout Europe and many famous medieval knights wrote new tales of bravery and chivalry.

One fictional knight

Ivanhoe

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivanhoe

Ivanhoe a historical novel by Sir Walter Scott

Ivanhoe is the story of one of the remaining Anglo-Saxon noble families at a time when the nobility in England was overwhelmingly Norman. It follows the Saxon protagonist, Sir Wilfred of Ivanhoe, who is out of favour with his father for his allegiance to the Norman king Richard the Lionheart. The story is set in 1194, after the failure of the Third Crusade, when many of the Crusaders were still returning to their homes in Europe. King Richard, who had been captured by Leopold of Austria on his return journey to England, was believed to still be in captivity.

Interesting pictures, but no chainmail bikini!

If it were a typical period game box cover like this

The guy would have more armor than a Tiger Tank,
while the lady would look freezing to death in a scrap of clothing.
