improved version of show_landmarks which you run in the background.
It scans the savegame directory periodically looking for new savegames
(like battle or arrival) and updates the map accordingly.
It has built-in code for unpacking the starting bmp file for the world map.

To get it to work for a non-Mac, you will need to look in the code and fix the EDIT HERE section to put in the correct paths to find the Assets and Game (savegame) directories.

Also, you must have the pirates_savegame_editor.pl in the same directory as show_landmarks.pl

This historically accurate and complete mod was built over the original by jlangsdo, with more work done in 2020 by Pirate and themodelcitizen such as completing France's transition to Portugal and producing more AI ship traffic.

Some borrowed graphics from this forum, including Amaroy, loki59, and angelmiyoko, and borrowed ship re-design from parksbanyon.

Sail through the East Indies, picking up cargo in the Spice Islands and chasing the treasure fleet through the Philippines while taking on 9 new named pirates.

That's interesting, wonder if I can use that to try building a new map. Although jlangsdo posted a script at one time that would make all the landscape files and stuff for you, if only someone still had that lying around

Can't advise on building a new map

If you think you have a method that may work give it a go.

Personally still trying to put all the pieces of how jlangsdo did the new
maps all together for his East India mod


Not having jlangsdo original source map he used, he posted a link in a thread but now dead as well as his now dead script link which recorded the island land mass positions from the source map which he cut up
makes it difficult to step through it all and follow his process

jlangsdo has given tantalising hints of how it was done
but no one else so far has been able to produce a brand new map area
just further mods of the existing maps.

What also doesn't help is all the multiple threads map content is spread over
(been trying to compile links in this thread)

He described the .tga.bhi file as "a binary file rather than a graphical file" - anyone know how to edit these? I'm kind of clueless with binary

Interesting, I can open it in HxD but can't make heads or tails of it. From what I can tell, Jlangsdo figured it out and his script island.pl would make it automatically from one of the map files (like his world_x0_y0_h.bmp). The other script it relies on, graphics_formats.pm, is actually in his show_landmarks mod

NOAA site moved to here:

Select dataset ETOPO1 (ice or bedrock, depending on what you are looking for).
Then scroll around the world, zoom in and out, and then use the icon below the + and - to select a rectangular area from which you want to get topography.

(Check out how shallow the sea is around Vietnam / Indonesia.)
