Rather than drag the quiz thread off topic, I'm starting a new thread about music.

For the last 25 years, I've been listening to a lot of Americana, a loosely connected genre of American music with roots in country and blues, which ranges from bluegrass to cowpunk. It has sometimes been known as alt-country, but this was always regarded as an unsatisfactory placeholder until a better name came along. Here is a good example:

First time I've seen Jason Isbell. He seems to be a very good country singer, thanks! I really like Alan Jackson, George Strait and Vince Gill!

The fiddle player who appears with Jason Isbell is his wife, Amanda Shires.

Here are a couple of songs you might enjoy, Salty!

I had to choose five favorite 2020 songs for WTMD’s year-end listener poll. I’ve been listening to the radio a lot more than usual this year while working at home, so getting it down to five was tough. Here are the five I submitted, plus four more. On a different day, the list might have been different in both order and content.

Sufjan Stevens – Video Game – Lament about our celebrity-obsessed culture and social media.

The Jayhawks – This Forgotten Town

Taylor Swift – exile (ft. Bon Iver) – Having conquered country and pop, TS begins her quest for indie cred.

Katie Pruitt – Expectations – Sounds like classic Fleetwood Mac.

Webb Wilder – Buried Our Love – Sounds like classic Warren Zevon.

HAIM – The Steps

Greta Van Fleet – My Way, Soon – Michigan quartet often compared to early Led Zeppelin, here sounds more like early Rush.

Freya Ridings – Castles – Technically a late 2019 song, but still getting airplay in early 2020.

Rolling Stones – Scarlet (ft. Jimmy Page) – Actually a 1974 recording, but retrieved from the vault and released in summer 2020.
